Sometimes you get plumbers that throw it all out. My local Roto Rooter leaves the copper and brass on their water heaters. And....if you have seen my Thanksgiving video, they are where I got all that 3" copper waste drain pipe from!!! Definitely a Thanksgiving blessing!!! 🦃👍

The shop I get the plumbing scrap keeps all their copper and big brass prices. The owner cashes it in and has party's for his techs. The owner will give me some copper at times if he's there. I'll check out your vid later today. I have been slacking on watching KZfaq lately

What is difference between red and yellow brass ? Does one have more scrap value?
@ThorntonScrapper8 ай бұрын
Red brass is 85% copper compared to 60% for yellow brass. Red brass is about .10/lb more than yellow brass
@steveherr4502 ай бұрын
at my yard it is .25 more for red brass.

Unless they are leaking already, they are good for air tanks with compressors.

One of my buddies just had me drop off two heaters that weren’t leaking to him so he could turn them into smokers. I don’t know if it’ll work out or not but he’s going to give it a go.

I have a question my home now it was my father he passed away and when he bought this house in 1998 there was a pool already here and I know it’s from like the 70s or 80s to 4 foot pool and octagon really large pool and everything is aluminum how much does the scrapyard pay for that type of aluminum I don’t want to go there and get cheated I don’t know too much about this stuff

Have you ever come across the actual tanks of the water heater being copper? I've seen them but never got my hands on one.
@ThorntonScrapper4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately not. I seen them in videos tho. KZfaqr Brass House told me the brand that makes them but I don't remember the brand name

I haven't seen one of those in many years, probably the last one i had was the late 70's. I do occasionally come up with commercial water heaters that have an extra copper coil or 2 in them. those coils usually weigh 50# each. Usually you find these type of water heaters in like an old laundromats. I use to own a laundromat and brought out all the laundromats in trailer parks around me back in the 80's and this is how i found out about those ones, otherwise i would be passing them up too. I occasionally still come across these because i look for them but other scrappers don't know it has that much more copper in them so i can outbid them at auctions when they do show up.

@@steveherr450 I got a tankless water heater that was from a laundry mat that had a copper coil over 100lbs from my buddies plumbing shop. Got a few smaller ones but that 100lb one was once in a life time

I've never seen someone do this before. Seems like quite a bit of work for the metal. What's your estimate of how much the metal is worth? And can you get rid of the stripped water tanks for free? Or do they have a scrap value? Since they're a mix of insulation and steel.
@ThorntonScrapper8 ай бұрын
You cam bring the stripped tanks to the scrap yard. At current pricing I would say a 40gal waterheater is worth around $10 for the steel tank and around $2 for the brass after its cleaned. I pick up over 100 water heaters a year from a plumbing co. so it's worth it for me
