The fact the Korean animators were given the proper respect and freedom they deserve for their work goes a LONG way to explaining why this show still looks so incredible all these years later. Legend of Korra, too.

Fun Fact The foaming Mouth Guy is a direct result of Mike and Bryan's trust in the animation team. The script read that he just faints, the team took it a whole bother level and added the gestures, foam, faint and recovery.

THANK YOU. As a Korean American and artist, you have NO idea how many arguments I've had with my Japanese (ethnic and national) girlfriend about Korean animation somehow being inferior to Japanese. I showed her Avatar and she was so thoroughly convinced it had to be done by Japanese studios that I just gave up.

I dont get that. Talent is talent. Why doesn it matter to people where something is animated? I mean, take a look at Castelvania. It has incredible animation and was produced in the US.

That’s a difference between being patriotic (I’m proud that my people can do that) and nationalistic (only my people can do that). It’s unfortunately wide spread in a lot of places.

The animation is the primary reason I'm not really looking forward to the live action Netflix show. Avatar exists perfectly in the medium of animation, and I just think live action isn't going to be able to deliver this show in the right way, even with the creators involved.

Yeah, I did a thread about this on Twitter, but even if Bryan/Mike are involved, the input of the Korean animators was so valuable to making the show what it is.

I understand your opinion but I also think Avatar is such a deep show that they can easily adapt it to any medium and explore the aspects that work best in each, while in animation they can fully realize the magical elements of the world and go for more dynamic fight scenes and slapstick humor, in live action they could focus more on aspects like dialogue, politics, philosophies, the injuries and deaths caused by war, martials arts choreographies that are not animation friendly (slow movements or many characters on screen for example) and much more. I really wish one day we'll also see a 3D adaptation, the story of The Last Airbender has a lot of untapped potential to be explored in different mediums.

I swear 2D Animator job is the most underappreciated and most overlooked profession in the US animation industry. If you want to be a 2D animator it's more likely to get that job outside of US, otherwise they mostly look for character designers, storyboard artist, BG artists and prop designers. A couple of studios like Powerhouse does look for in-house animators, but it's only a handful.

There was a thread on reddit about how good Avatar was and people were praising how good US cartoon animation was. So i commented that Avatar's animation was actually produced in South Korea (since i saw the interview with Avatar VAs confirming that), and i got downvoted lol. That was a years ago tho, i wonder if they realize it by now.

People could just look at the credits in the show and see that all the animators have Korean names... but unfortunately no one looks at credits I guess

I remember seeing a video where one of the animators was talking about how they animated the characters talking in avatar, they focused more on the expression than on an absolutely faithful lip sync. Because in the end, what's most important is communicating the emotion of the character and not let the constraint of the lyp sync hinder that. She said that the showrunners let these details of animation up to them pretty freely too. I found that very cool and interesting as a student in 2D animation.

I was bothered for years to watch the show, and was told to avoid The Legend of Korra. I watched both, and I was whelmed by Avatar and was very surprised by The Legend of Korra.

@@ExcuseMyWeebRudeness I watched ATLA as an adult the first time. Thought it was awesome, very similar to the anime I watched growing up. I said "finally US is catching on!" Then I noticed I kept rewatching ATLA over and over and keep finding even more awesome stuff about it!

I am starting to realise Korean has a good taste in story or comics..cause all the comics/manhwa that I ve read in webtoon are so good with art style and story .... their styles is so unique..so many Korean authors that I appreciate.... so I have no doubt Korea has many talented artist too I hope they will get more recognition as the high quality manhwa that got anime adaptations lately...I hope more manhwa will get anime adaptations and dubbed by the Koreans as well

It's kinda unfortunate that it's seen as a frivolous career by Korea though. If you're gonna be an artist, your whole family will want you to commercialize. You don't want to be a an artist in Korea. It's just not a good profession. Usually they are in school for other careers and do art on the side and then just somehow find a big enough audience to justify the switch. I'm Korean American and this is a perspective based on what my Korean friends who are from Korea tell me.

The animation paired with sound design is definitely what makes the bending for me. My favorite is how heavy and solid the earthbending sounds and looks

The sound of combustion bending was so crazy! like a muffled gunshot as it travels and explodes.

The clip at 7:20 demonstrated really well how the staff of the movie did not understand the bending concepts. In the show, bending elements always corresponded to movements, like the force in Star Wars. If they kick forward, rock has to fly forward. The forces created through these bending moves also impact other physical properties like density or volume. They kick into the ground, pushing away rock, they then direct it upward to build a wall with a mass corresponding to the impact of the step. 2 Steps --> Construct a wall and push it further up/Get a rock and propel it upward Directional move with arms --> Create a movement pattern/scheme Kick + 2 punches --> Release the material with force If this was the proper show, this multi-men coordinated attack would've unleashed a hellscape of incoming rock, stone, dirt and other materials with great force before the enemy. Such a powerful move could've startled benders like Azula, Katara and maybe even Toph, and force their attack to a halt. But what do we get here? They do all that to lift a medium-sized rock and need another guy to fully execute the move, although they are at least 6 grown warriors with badass warcries. And then, the fire nation soldier just stands there and waits for it to happen? Like wtf, even the stupidest guards we saw in the army could've just stepped aside like it was nothing. This "thing" is a disappointment. It disrespected all of the aspects of the original. Let's just hope the Netflix adaptation will be better, although my stomach gives me mixed signals on this one too... Edit: If the film making is so poorly executed that it seems stupid then the staff is still responsible. They have to deliver a comprehensive scene the viewer can understand without additional information. It's not about what the *didn't* show, it's about what they actually *did* show, and what they showed was a joke.

Nah this scene was very poorly done. Well you are right about how their movements don't automatically move the element. They group actually does send up a big wave of rocks. The scene was just so poorly shot it looks like it took a small army to send one stupid rock.

with reference to the rocks, the poor filming of the shot isn't the issue, its that the FX are bad. you can choose to believe that offscreen they were earthbending a bunch of rock, but on-screen you only see a single rock being flung at the fire nation soldier. there's another video (i forget by who) that goes into detail about why the CGI of shamalan's movie was terrible. It also touches on why the guard just stands there waiting for it to happen; M. Night really seemed to want to do long takes for the action scenes , which in execution ended up having people sitting still between their 'shots' while the camera physically moved around to focus on someone else when it was their turn to do whatever

I think it is worth reflecting on the the perspective of the show; Aang is a Monk. Their bending movements are based on Tai Chi etc, moving energy around the body and in turn reminding oneself of their inherent role on Earth. This is the energy and nature of the power that moves the elements around them. Understanding. Respect. Intention. Avatar is a show about understanding your power and place in the world, and not allowing yourself to be caught up in narrative, but be present as you live within your accepted purpose.

I never thought about the blur effect that you mention near the end of this video before but that is wild. I always just assumed it was to hide lazy animation and QUALITY but seeing where it's used here and how it ruins the smears is just sad. Always fascinating to see a new element that you'd never thought about before. Obviously, fantastic video in general but that bit really blew my mind.

3D models won’t have motion blur ufotable uses 3D models for reference for action scene but it might not be as accurate as a real martial artist

Well, you could say it is anime since it literally means animation. Go show some random japanese person any Disney rennissance film and the first thing it'll go through his/her mind is gonna be the word "anime". So yes, it's anime, but not Japanese animation.

I honestly find Korean story structure and delivery to be interesting, yes, but often times to foreign and "weird". It's hard to get attached to characters or feel the emotional punch of a climactic scene.

Tower of God (Korean comics with great story) should have been made by the Korean studio. Instead production committee decided to give it to the Japanese studio that had a lot of restrictions (cour system that requires for the show to have either 13 or 26 episodes). Because of that the story that needed 19-20 episodes got 13 and the anime was rushed as the result.

You showed my two favorite scenes: Combat: the blue spirit splits the spear, towards the camera, while attempting to free Aang from the fire nation prison. So smooth and cool. ♥️♥️ Noncombat: Sokka freaks out upon learning that Aang has signed up as a student in a fire nation school. LOL 🤣

god bryke rlly did everything right. theres so much respect for the cultures portrayed in the show, for the people working behind show. it really does feel like it was made w so much love and care. it never fails to amaze me and make me gain an even deeper appreciation for the show.

Don't forget Aaron Ehasz and his wife Elizabeth. They did the nuance, the heavy lifting of the dialogue and story lines for the heavy story elements. Plus Aaron's contribution was to make Toph a blind girl!

im not. sorry, it did seem like i did. i think that aaron and elizabeth's inputs are big factors in how the show came to be, it wouldn't have been the same without them. theyre doing an incredible job on the dragon prince as well.

@@eggsnspam After watching Korra I can totally see how much they contributed to making The Last Airbender such a fun and engaging show, I gave up at season 3 of Korra because of how boring the story and characters were, the concepts were good but in execution it just didn't work, so it's clear this guy carried the original show. Shame he was apparently sexist towards women at one of his later jobs, his work is really good, guess it's another case of separating artists from their work.

Its amazing how South Korea is finally getting the spotlight now as they should have a long time ago. From absolutely brilliant films and kdramas to masterful zombie thrillers like Kingdom and Train to Busan, to their webtoons and manhwas, and even kpop. Its about time countries other than Japan got some credit.

Wow everything about this absolutely blows my mind! I love the fact that the Korean animators are the one that made the power and the effects of the bending better over time to get a sense of the characters' power and how they've improved. You're totally right when you say that the movement and action is part of how we get attached to them as characters. This is absolutely excellent and you get a ton of really impressive research! Avatar raised the bar in animated shows for me. As long as I live I’ll compare every show to Avatar and decide if it’s worth watching or not. Speaking of which: how you heard of the Dragon Prince? One of the writers from Avatar created it. It’s more of a European fantasy series but feels like an anime at times.

@@captainfiri7619 The romance was surprisingly actually done really well in this show. Zuko's romantic subplot was a little quiet and underdeveloped, but the show combined the slow fluctuating burn between Aang and Katara over three seasons with the satisfying and humorous pairing of Sokka and Suki, which makes for a great dynamic between the main cast that's easy to get invested in.

@@hyperum7862 Okay, Sokka and Suki were awesome and the best pairing in the show. Katara and Aang were cute... until season 3, when it became kinda off-putting because of how awfully one-sided it was. And Mai and ZukoThey are disastrous trainwreck of relationship. Their personalities don't match, like, at all. I'm not saying that this relationship is "toxic", but these two are so, so ill-suited for each other that I can't believe it's actually happened in the show that is so good at writing compelling characters and not some below-average fanfiction.

Just finished watching Avatar for the first time, and yeah one of my favourite parts about it was just how expressive it always felt, like the people animating it must have been having fun doing it. Bits like when Toph opens Hama’s box and everyone crowds around her, or the foaming mouth guy, or a bunch of other bits I can’t remember off the top of my head, actually added a lot of fun to the show and created a lot of my favourite moments with nothing but unnecessary visuals.

Just finished ATLA and LOK and honestly the action scenes in this series are one of the reasons I decided to watch it. The dedication to each bending art and their corresponding martial art is amazingly well done. And to consider it came out on 2005-2008 that is just an amazing progress and dedication.

Something that I always loved the most about this Animation style is... that it just *screams* "hands and feet". Which are considered as the most difficult parts of human body to draw and animate. But in Avatar, they are almost ALWAYS visible and in motion. This brings a lot more body language to the characters, something that usually cartoons and animes are trying to avoid or replace with something else.

Avatar is a fantastic show, their attention to detail and story is something that fascinated me and still does! I remember looking at it as a child and noticing details such as the characters hair grew between episodes (Zuko in season 2, Aang in season 3, sokka..), the details in fight scenes, the characters personality matures, etc, little things that were not common in other Cartoons and that I loved about Avatar. Yeah that one is animated and I guess storyboarded really well! I think it should show a bit more restrain though, it's way to much action for me...

I own an ATLA art book by the creators, & it goes into quite a bit of detail about the production of the show, & they both played a significant role. The show wouldn't be what it is without them. They cared deeply about every aspect of the production, & befriended some truly passionate, talented individuals to work with. It all came together to create something truly great. Made me appreciate the show even more.

I’m so glad I found this! The whole time watching the show I was consistently blown away by the attention to detail and extra effort they put into the animation. I could never figure out how they pulled it off because I thought that those details would be lost due to lack of communication if they completely outsourced animation, but I also knew it would be incredibly difficult to put in all of that effort in-house on a small nick show budget. Things like Zuko’s hair growing out in a believable way, the characters changing their outfits often, even specific scenes like Sokka’s “water triiibe” scene in book 2 where they have him whip his head around as a follow through with the rest of his body as he leaves. All of these things can be easily taken for granted, but if you’re paying attention you can clearly see all of the care they put into making everything look they way they wanted it to.

One thing that bugs me on most anime is how many still images they sometimes have. Animation is hard and expensive of course but shows like avatar or castlevania have so much more animation and character in comparison. Characters are moving and emoting all the time and still reaction shots are pretty rare. Anime can feel more like a slideshow then....well anime sometimes.

Great video. I really enjoyed all the tidbits. One small correction though, the showrunner for the show was Aaron Ehasz. It's on his wikipedia page and on imdb. He's also the co-creator of The Dragon Prince.

Aaron Ehasz was the head writer on Avatar, but Bryan and Mike are considered the "showrunners", with Mike serving as story editor, overseeing Ehasz's work. Ehasz is the co-creator and showrunner of The Dragon Prince, as you say though.

They put a lot of effort into making this a high-quality program. Animation, voice acting, quality of writing, soundtracks, etc. Really nice attention to detail for them to base each bending discipline on real-life martial arts and manifest it through the animation. And several of their voice actors have successful careers in major live-action TV/films as well; Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs, Daniel Dae Kim, Robert Patrick, Clancy Brown, Ron Perlman, Kevin Michael Richardson. And the VAs of the main cast did an incredible job, too.
