I am soooo glad I inherited a lot of my cast iron from my grandmother. They're about 90 years old now and my kids will get them in a few years. Its paramount to know how to treat them but its so easy once they're seasoned so it's worth it and, it is a weapon if someone breaks in. ;)

I've been using cast iron pans my whole life. Litterally. Good job on your video. But why I'm commenting is Because of your "HAIR"!!! I love your colors!. I love the grey!!! I also love the natural growth pattern you have! Don't you dare change it. You look amazing! It's awsome!

My grandma never used soap on hers. If something was a little stuck on she’d run hot water in it dump it out and scour it with salt! Came very clean every time (& she’d apply more oil after cleaning)

I see you mentioned "good oil" keep in mind that lodge "pre seasons" their pans, but it is not with a good oil. Should always strip them first and then proceed with your method. Great vid, very informative for newbies. Cast iron is always my first choice

Parker sounds like my 18 & 20yr old boys! 🤣 While we are eating lunch they are asking what's for dinner! lol My oldest son was JUST asking how to season the cast iron we got him & his wife! I sent him written instructions on how I do it but when I saw this I sent him the video link! THANK YOU!!! I do it the same way and it works AWESOME!!!!

I always polish my pans first with a drill sander and electric sander. Remove the orange peel from the cast to a smooth finish. Then use wet and dry to polish the pan to a very smooth finish.

Thanks. I got a new 12 inch for Christmas. Cooked in it for the 1st time today. I did the rinse and heat dry but did not put it in the oven 2 times..according to the lodge paper on it. Thinking I trust you more..

I fry 2 eggs in my Lodge cast iron skillet every morning. I get the pan hot then put some olive oil in and then a little butter and the eggs slide around like they were in a nonstick pan.
@yearginclarke
@yearginclarke 2 ай бұрын
Butter is what makes it perform that way. Butter is amazing for that non-stick property. Bacon grease (CLEAN grease) is great also. Both butter and bacon grease seem to be the best for me, and I assume lard would be great also. I use bacon grease more often because I like the flavor better, and it doesn't burn off and leave residue/solids like butter will. I frequently cook multiple batches in the same pan, and butter doesn't seem to hold up as long. Of course temperature control is critical for eggs. Medium low. But when I use olive oil by itself, or any other type of plant based oils (peanut oil, generic vegetable oil, etc.) it seems to be more sticky compared to butter or bacon grease.

I love cast iron. I had a few pieces that kept rusting. So I looked on line to some cowboy bob or whatever his name was, and he showed exactly how to remove the rust and how to season it. I finally have nice pieces without rust. He also said to use leather or bandanas to wipe it out, not paper towels. I went to the $store and bought cotton handkerchiefs. Works just like bandanas. Thanks for showing how to do a new piece.

I have been so bad with mine and they sat in a sink where ther really wasn't any water but got a little on them and got the sink rusty as well as the pan and I'm trying so hard to get them back to where I can use them again. So this helps to see the right way once I get the rust off of them. I will be sure and do them about 6 times before I use them again. Thanks for such good info.

Good morning my dear friend! You look so cute in your new plaid apron. Looks so becoming on you. Your tutorial was very interesting for many of us. I wish I still had my cast iron skillet from Kentucky. It made the best fried chicken. We were in the army then and I gave it away before our transition to Germany. I miss it. I just may go to one of my local thrift stores and buy me another one. Once again thank you for stiring up your gifts!!!🎁🎁

My mother had a really old one of these that she put in the oven and set to self clean. The bottom split. I didn't even think of getting her one for Christmas! She was the hardest to buy for and I got weird stuff like three different types of cooking oil, pink salt, a strainer haha. I guess I know what I am getting her next year!

We throw them in the ashes of a fire that has burned out and let it sit overnight. It burns it all off. Then wash really good and immediately do the process she is showing but do it several times as she explained. You will end up with an excellent finish. Good luck. Also if you look on Homesteading Family channel, she did a series on seasoning cast iron.
