5:25 I respectfully disagree. Strongly. Why can’t the wife settle the disagreement or grievance with the mother in law, woman to woman? Having the husband talk to the father or mother without the wife present , instead of the wife to mother in law, is a violation of Matthew 18, where the offended party goes directly to the other party, involving no one else. At least involve the wife and the mother-in-law at the same time with the men as well, but don’t leave them out of it. There is an elephant in the room if the mother-in-law does not at some point repent and ask for forgiveness (specifically for her sin of favoritism), face-to-face with the wife. If your wife has a conflict against anyone or someone else has something against her, she needs to go to that person, and be reconciled. I don’t see anywhere where the Bible teaches that the husbands are the reconcilers of the wife sins. This sheer amount of miscommunication, assumptions, and unclarity that would arise from not actually bringing the offended parties into the same room together is astounding. It’s essentially the game of telephone, where my wife tells me something, I tell my dad something, he tells his wife something, and she tells him something back, and the communication chain keeps bouncing back-and-forth, with no real answers. If a mother-in-law sins against your wife, and is not brought to the point of saying, I apologize or I need to ask for forgiveness directly to the wife’s face, that is a recipe for resentment and bitterness for the wife. This is training the mother-in-law that she will not have to face the painful consequences of telling a person to their face that they are sorry, and can just wait for the men of the family to negotiate out her behavior. Wives are not exempt from asking for and receiving forgiveness face to face, simply because they are under the headship of the husband. Either have all four parties involved, or only have the women meet, but do not exclude the women from this reconciliation conversation. If a wife cannot reconcile one on one with a mother-in-law, she cannot reconcile with anyone who offends her. That means that for every single time she has her feelings hurt or is mistreated by another woman in church or anywhere else, you as a husband have to go to that woman and potentially her husband alone, without your wife present.
