7:33 "strings" are what we programmers call text i.e. strings of characters. What this means is not changing the text so that translators can translate that text, and not find it has been changed and needs to be translated again.

Pretty sure code invasion is a dev term although not one I've prersonally used(I'm a retired dev!) - probably implying no new files allowed after the freeze. Strings are a dev term for any literal sequence of text characters. For example all the Menu titles, dialog labels etc etc. All of these need to be translated for the non-English builds and the translators don't want menu terms etc changing while they are translating, hence a string freeze (also people building automated test tools need to know what strings to look for). Definitely excited for Gimp 3 (I've been using it since 1997), especially the non-destructive editing features.

Freezing strings is the idea that all error messages, tooltips, and other text-based items are not changed in English so that the translators can make reasonable translations to those various languages with some level of confidence that they aren't going to re-check them over and over.

I couldn't afford Photoshop even when I had Windows. 20 years with Linux so Gimp. I actually started with Gimp in the beginning while I was still using Windows. Windows XP was my last OS I touch by Windows. So the transition to Linux was a breeze. 25 years with Gimp and loving every minute of it. Can't wait for the newer release of it. But I have plenty of third-party plugins and many Gimp Repository Scripts. So to me not much features I'll notice for sure. We'll see.

Same - my profits are RAZOR THIN so paying for Photoshop would mean I would have to give up creative work and find a cubicle ... it is that tight .... shame on this monthly fee crap - I am still working and keeping up with "modern" stuff on a 2003 version of WORD that I PURCHASED - I don't mind paying if I actually get something - but a monthly fee ? Oh Heaven's No.

@@bookswithatwist-vanvelzerp9262 I'm not sure the smart people or the dumb people that pay for stuff you can actually get for free some where else. Might have to learn it and tweak it to fit you needs. But free over paying something is a no brainier for me. I'll go for the free stuff and just learn it to the fullest of the capabilities it offers. That's including the third-party developers that agree with me and enjoy the free stuff as well. And just developed something; well it needs this and shares it with everybody and now we have the extra tool to make the tool much faster and efficient. As for Word I been using LibreOffice and it works just fine for me. I'm all for FOSS all the way. That's why I'm a big Linux fan.

I hope GIMP gets their 3.0 release right. Audacity's 3.4 release was incredibly buggy (3.4.1 was even worse!), and they've been trying to fix it ever since. It's sometimes better to spend more time to get something developed right than to rush development and end up with a total mess.

What I mean by 4k support is that a balanced scaling in the interface is very important. When working on a 4K large monitor, some of the icons can be enlarged, while other interface parts should not be fixed and small, so that there can be a balanced sizing. Already below and before, features in software like Adobe Photoshop and Photopea are necessary for some things they hold as industry standard, but the rest is all Adobe's PR Effort, advertising and unnecessary hype. Okay, instead of Adobe's PR effort, advertising and unnecessary hype, I mean pure advertising and unnecessary hype, we need software that solves things in a user-friendly way instead of getting lost in the details. They say industry standard, which industry? Just focus on photo manipulation, success in this area will pave the way for other areas. Krita is great for Digital Drawing and Painting Inkscape already handles Vector work cleanly (Expectation: Let Gimp 3.0 compete with Photoshop and Photopea in photo manipulation and win, it is a wish and a strong desire... We wish it success)

@3polygons
@3polygons 7 ай бұрын
@@PandaEinsteinn *TLDR* (no need to read below, it's a ton of text, but someone might be curious) : YEP, absolutely, at least with Gimp 3.0 RC1 on (hopefully) end of February and any version after that. :). Which is very happy news for artists, IMO. Well... People have become demanding in latest years in what is expected a tool to have to do painting work, illustration. I'm very demanding but not in the same matters than most people... but in the very core things: - Good Wacom (or - insert here your tablet- ) support. Besides removing friction (specially for less "techy" artists than myself) of errors with the tablet drivers and the application, a good way for us to configure comfy shortcuts in the pen's side buttons in the Wacom driver panel, in combination with the painting app's settings. This has become extremely flexible in Gimp 2.99.17 and surely many earlier versions. - Solid, no laggy brush behavior, allowing a "flow"-like feature like in Photoshop had since many years. Yes, the richness of configuration of brushes in Krita (it's crazy that something THAT good is open source. Not usual in graphics, with the exception of the great Blender. Inkscape getting there) is almost unbeatable, and some brushes are good in mimicking traditional media of (specially) dry and wet painting (yet far from Rebelle or Corel Painter, but those use particle physics and stuff, depend heavily on GPU hardware, which actually limits the size of the canvas, even if having a monster of a GPU... it doesn't come "free". Not an issue for most casual painters, tho). I... don't really need traditional mimicking (of course, I love it as a traditional painter, tho) as much as other "core stuff", which I am listing here. - Good enough UI and cursors, so that it is not too distracting (looking at you, Photoline. Despite your spartan interface, your image editing features are insane, but those painting cursors and shortcuts config are lacking yet). Both in the brushes, but also with the color picker. As, for example, in Krita, I personally have not been able (it is impossible, for now) to disable the 2 sampled colors rectangles while picking a color, not even as a dark and hidden option in preferences. Not possible!. If you are constantly picking tones (glazing/build-up techniques) this, while not "horrible", can be _very_ distracting. So Krita is definitely among the best painting tools, open source AND commercial, but definitely not one I can be comfortable with, very sadly. This surely is not upsetting anyone else (or a small, veery silent percentage), as I believe no one is complaining about it. For me this kind of thing is a deal breaker. Reason why despite having Photoline purchased, I don't use it other than for some complex image editing not possible in other apps. But fair enough, as it's a photo editing app, the name even says it... (still, only for those of us fine with "spartan" UIs, it "could" be usable for painting in the future, fingers crossed). - Ability to do all the main tasks in image editing (usually not possible in apps like Rebelle or Art Rage, etc), and export well in professional formats (PDF-X, TIFF, PSD, etc), as this is an actual real need in today's work of any illustrator (really, since many years, tho), digital painter, game artist, etc. In this, Gimp is way more advanced than most specialized painting apps, reason why I have always been closer to establish as main illustration tools software like Affinity Photo, Photoshop (tho as I am not anymore at companies -full time freelancer- , am avoiding PS all I can), Gimp or PSP (Corel Paint Shop Pro). Having to constantly load PS or etc while you are in a painting project with another app, is IMO not functional, specially with huge canvases (for print) that fill up a ton of memory. A "work horse", in real life duties of an illustrator is often more useful that a super specialized painting tool with its painting "toys". Reason why I think Gimp can be better than Krita for some of us digital artists (not all). - Gimp and PSP have had (for different reasons) a BIG issue for someone wanting to work in Adobe RGB or any other wide range color profile. sRGB was the only allowed way. They are changing this _drastically_ in Gimp now with the so called "space invasion" (which also adds CMYK support, a glaring need in many graphic workflows for print, even tho till now "some" sort of CMYK workflow was/is possible in Gimp). PSP seems it will still do sRGB internal conversions, if my last info is not too old already. The most glaring need for me remaining for basic Gimp work might come even in December: picking the color in an Adobe RGB based file, in the canvas, (configured Gimp for all in Adobe RGB) so that in the GUI, at the palette, the color I am seeing in the sample and the palette is actually in Adobe RGB mode, not sRGB like it is now. For obvious reasons for any painter (or photo retoucher, I would add...), as in many cases it is a totally different green, purple, etc, that sRGB can't show (and ofc, will never show in sRGB-only monitors (any mainstream PC one, Apple might be a mixed bag), of course. But yep in iPhones, high end Android phones (p3 color space or better), and any professional monitor (ie, an Eizo, or semi-pro Benq and Asus), and also in print. With this solved, at least in the "essential" stuff needed for me as a digital artist (and I know, then for a bunch more), yep, once with that it's all covered (CMYK is very useful for final check, too) for me in Gimp. So, 3.00 RC1 (surely end of February), will become one of my tools for illustration, and not just a curiosity on my drive and for family members to have a full featured photo editing app. Not because it'd be my best painting app, but because it is open source (which is much more durable than commercial, in my opinion) and even with a soon to come nightly build (but I recommend anyone waiting for the 3.0 RC1! Am just crazy and could make it work stable for me, that nightly build). In these regards, Krita had a nice advantage till now in having full support of wider color spaces, like Adobe RGB and others. But Gimp will be now getting all that. :) So yep, I do see a bright future of Gimp from 3.0 and forward, as (also) a painting tool, or a software with which you definitely can do pro work in digital painting, even if this opinion would put me to fight with any other mate illustrator, painter or etc. But.. the core for pro digital painting work is there, IMO.

Keep in mind I am not a open source die-hard by any stretch. I mostly use commercial software (and Blender), daily . Through decades I have seen tons of commercial apps raise and fall to never be produced again in the commercial world, and no way anyone would pick them up and fork or maintain at least with patches. As it's impossible in closed source. And that - more importantly- I am an art apps "collector", to the point of needing an "intervention", lol. I have 'em *ALL* , lol. _Many_ acquired in sales moment (I'm patient...) of the year and things like that : PaintStorm Studio (ultra cheap, no need for discounts, really good, having most of the essential "core" features, and more), Rebelle (king or queen of traditional media painting imitation), Corel Painter 2023 (I got it for 30$ in HumbleBundle, btw, 100% legal, Corel is involved), Clip Studio Paint EX 2.0 (I LOVE it, one of my main apps, I've done many full projects), Affinity Photo (it is good enough for painting, done many full projects, and super complete for professional export and editing. Not Photoshop, for close enough for me), PaintTool SAI (best in the planet for ultra HUGE canvases (it's magic) yet keeping some sort of nice painting technique. Amazing blending. Unobtrusive UI), Realistic Paint Studio (same creators of PaintStorm Studio), VERY realistic oil painting, Art Rage Vitae, and Paint Shop Pro. I am probably forgetting some other, got as almost always in a sales moment. Said in another way: That the one I don't have purchased is Photoshop, lol (I don't do subscriptions other than rent or power/water/phone/inet bills. I also dislike their AI stuff with how they used the work of artists, etc). Despite having professionally used it, at companies, for decades, and actually liking its UI and workflows; I'm more familiar with it than anything. Conclusion: Well, all that said, as context, if TOMORROW I'd be forced to use only Gimp 3.x or even probably a stable dev 2.99.x (btw, fun fact, was the case at a company, had to use, decades ago, Gimp and Inkscape as only tools (until they _finally_ bought PS)... a linux loving company, built by linux die-hards :D :D ) ... I think I'd be totally fine, not the case until recently (not the case now until they solve the sRGB sampled colors in the palette and sample rectangle, though). Which to me is really impressive, for how much I had tried before to adapt it to my needs, not successfully. Beware though, I have not done a full, long, complex painting project with a recent version, yet. It is in the deep details when problems arise... but I am 95.072% sure it'd be just fine. I plan to make a complex painting project with it with the 3.0 RC1, and post it in social media, probably with stages & sketches, maybe even before with a dev version, if the RC gets delayed. Also to show people in the field that it is totally possible, and not "hard" to use, which is the usual "slogan". There are MANY master pieces (and painting masters) having done so with Gimp before, and also with MyPaint, but... they're not a "legion" in numbers... and among a lot of the pros I know... Gimp is not even in the conversation. Which is going to be _wrong_ from 3.0, IMO. I am not mentioning some VERY painter friendly features they have been including in recent Gimp versions. That a lot of people think are essential (not to me, my essential ones are listed above. But I am a seasoned painter and illustrator... I know the work can be done pretty well with the mentioned "core" ones). So...yup, exciting times (despite AI, 😖 ), at least in that regard.

As a matter of fact, as shocking as it might sound, I'd *rather* use Gimp 3 for painting projects than my Corel Painter 2023. While the latter is highly professional, and an absolute reference in painting, in my opinion, the UI, workflow, ways to change brush size, many matters in daily work, make Gimp preferable. If willing to mimic very realistically traditional media, then, of course nope, but because nothing comes close in that to Rebelle, Corel Painter, Expresii (only for eastern watercolor style!, but crazy good), Realistic Paint Studio or Art Rage Vitae. Now, for real actual work of an illustrator, digital painter, game artist... these apps might come short to use them solely without often swapping to other apps (PS, Gimp, Affinity Photo, Photoline), unless all your client work is about mimicking traditional media, or you are a very established painter that totally needs that touch and is not depending on client work, but just personal projects... or are just a hobbyist who don't need/care about certain project needs, being as well able to avoid them.

@@3polygons Have you tried Krita yet? It is an awesome software! I was trying out GIMP 2.99, and I was so impressed by the smoothness of the brush strokes while using my tablet! It is a huge improvement compare to the 2.10 and older versions of Gimp which the brush strokes were kind of lagging. Even the 2.10 version and older versions, I could not do cross hatching due to the lag. But with the version 2.99, no problem! 😊 🙌 So Gimp 3.0 will definitely attract more digital painters just like Krita! By the way, I am a Mac user and a former Adobe user! 😊

I gotta say, im excited. It seems like with this update Gimp will fnally be good enough to compete with Photoshop on thr main features used by most user. Having said that, adobe is embracing Ai in a way thay seems very reasonable. Making it do the tedious work artists dont like to do and making iteration much faster. And so although Gimp is finally going to be very capable, its going to be much slower.

And they won't stop ruining Blender's unique aspects until a 3dsmax/maya user can just pick it up without learning or looking up anything. That's their holy grail - becoming a poor man's 3dsmax. "Don't be irrationally afraid of changes! Retrain your muscle memory every few months! It's such an exciting adventure..." No. Screw your development adventures. I want a boring, reliable tool.

If "Jehan" is indeed french, this avatar name is a pun on the french word "géant", which obviously means "giant". 🤓 So if you are interested in the accurate pronunciation, any free online french word speaker will let you know. 😉

End of times, or start of good times? Probably end of times, but let's maintain some optimism.

If AI were integrated starting with version 3, that would be revolutionary.

It won't be, but having a much more solid foundation with GIMP 3.0's launch will help re-orient GIMP for the future and put it on a better track for future development.

AI and GIMP are unlikely to happen soon. AI requires a huge infrastructure of servers and data that GIMP as an open-source project run by a relatively few, most unpaid, volunteers simply can't provide. Maybe someday somebody will create a large open-source repository of free image data and the massive server engines needed to generate the AI graphics for GIMP to use, but that's a long way off IMHO. (And somebody needs to figure out a funding model to keep those "free" servers running - it's no coincidence that most imaging companies are moving to a subscription model!)

I don't know. Photopea was made by one person and it's way better than this crap will ever be.. I would love to see a proper opensource image editing software but this is ridiculous.

When the new version 3 arrives, what should I install first to update and test the new version? Will it come to the dev channel or the stable channel first?
