What makes a woman 'bad' in a Bollywood film, and how did Krishna from the movie Ishqiya make us rethink the trope of the 'bad woman'?
'Recasting' is The Swaddle’s new video series where we look at characters who defy the stereotypes of Indian cinema.

@Riya Saha You do know #Metoo is for sexual harassment, right? There's a difference between seducing and sexually harassing. If a woman sexually harasses her way up the corporate ladder, she is as guilty of sexual harassment as any other man would be. But seduction and consensual sex for whatever reason does not make her guilty of molestation 🙄🙄

I love how Indian people say that sex and "women who wear indecent clothes" is a western concept. Look at ancient temples around us. Look at unfiltered, uneditied stories of our God's and goddesses. Look at ancient texts like kamasutra. Sex, and people's bodies weren't villainized and shamed and covered. They were explored and respected for their natural functions. There are so many depictions of sex and naked bodies in our culture, and it was never shown as bad, neither was naked body equated to sex. It was the invaders (Britishers, Mughals) who enforced the concepts of "modesty", "naked bodies are inappropriate", "women should cover themselves" etc. And now the west is evolving and realising that sex shouldn't be villainized and women shouldn't be objectified for what they wear, while we Indians still have the same backward mentality which isn't even really part of our "culture"

@Riya Saha First, no it's not right but most people use it an excuse to demean women's capability. It much less often than people blow up to be. And it's not black and white as the movie shows. Some women try to use their sexuality for advantage and men may or mayn't deny. It doesn't harm the men. But when a boss asks for so called favours from their employees in return of promotion and stop their promotion inspite of their professional capability. That's when MeeToo comes. Man offering a female boss favours are not common because unlike men most women don't see men as sexual objects.

@@shadowhymn5162 I don’t want to be Meerabai or Ahilyabai. I want to wear shorts, drink a little with friends and have fun without feeling immoral. Swaddle points out double standards and the oppressions of Indian ‘culture’. Indians only glorify women who sacrifice, fit the cultured bill and befitted them . Real women-hood and manhood is a construct from society to benefit from them by devoiding them of their personal freedoms, more from women than men. The real womanhood you are talking about only seeks to benefit from them rather than comply to their wishes. Also why would swaddle want to inculcate western ideals into women and make them haywire? To control society? Why would they want to spread propaganda by going against a culture that oppresses people? They do have fair points to make.

For instant, in Marathi serials, the vamp is always the modern woman who wears short clothes and doesn't believe in being selfless and submissive. She wants to work, wants to separate the hero from his family by asking to live separately and doesn't believe in traditions. Examples: Majhya Navryachi Baiko, Aai Kuthe Kay Karte. People are complex whether it's male or female. No one is completely good or completely bad. In our childhood we thought sleeping beauty was cursed by a bad mean fairy. But finally Disney acknowledged the back story of the bad fairy(maleficent) . Similarly when we start judging someone be it male or female first we must empathize with that person. It is completely wrong to categorize people as good or bad. Similary movies also should portray multidimensionality of a character, and not just their bright or dark side

Morals are how we treat the people we know. It's what makes you a good friend, neighour, partner, parent etc. BUT, Ethics are what builds a society. The problem with our society is that its run by the subjective morals of one group of people and they try to project their morals on complete strangers and we end up with a society that's governed by self-aggradizement. By being the first peasant to jump up to teach others a lesson about one's own moral point of view, we've done our part in the erosion of our entire social fabric. So, try to judge less...

For example, you and your family might think (just assuming) that women who go partying are all loose, women who consume alcohol are characterless; and you project that thought onto a complete stranger say me and my family and you point us out in society saying "these people are immoral" because we don't follow your subjective morals.. that's what I'm saying.

@Riya Saha It's not ethically wrong for two consenting adults to engage in a sexual relationship given that it's not coerced. It might be after marriage or before depending upon one's own set of morals. Here you are assuming that all men are naive and gullible and are unable to recognise other's true intentions. This is the same assumption given by moral polices who try to shut women indoors and ask them to wear "clothes" considered decent (acc. to them) because they might entice men. It's pure and clear victim blaming.

@@Kingpin-zr5vg See that's my point. One knows alcohol is bad for health. One's own personal health. Then why do you think the indian government or any govt. for that matter has not banned alcohol, till now? Because we cannot run a society based on one's own personal life choices. For example, you don't drink or smoke at all, some people drink and smoke occasionally keeping their health in check, some people drink and smoke like no tomorrow. All of these are personal choices and are directly affecting an individual. AN INDIVIDUAL, that's my point. You are completely free to not indulge with people who drink and smoke, but what you don't have freedom to do is ask say me and my family to also not do it. The best thing to happen to India is industrial liberalisation. That opened us up to so many possibilities and perspectives and enabled us to come out of our cultural cacoon. I'm glad we're finally questioning the Madonna-w*ore complex and viewing woman as complex beings rather than artless uni-dimensional creatures.

I may like to watch/read various shades in fictional characters, irrespective of their gender; but in reality for me atleast, I would love to live a simple life, minding my own business. Instead of taking law in my hands, would fight within the law, if I feel the law is faulty or unfair then will fight against the law by using other laws. Enjoying or understanding the characters like Krishna or Kabir Singh is one thing, taking the inspiration from the good side of their characters is acceptable, appreciating the actors and all the people involved in the work for their job is also okay....But glorifying the 'whole' character? To me atleast this can't be acceptable.

The reason why Indian audience, of that time, weren't appreciative of "Vamps" is because they seemed anachronistic for their time. Indians, then, weren't in touch with Western culture and lifestyle and, therefore, saw such "Vamps" as aberrations. However, with globalization, Western culture pervaded Indian cinema (which this video mentions too) and Indians started to familiarize themselves with the "Vamp" trope and now it has become quite prevalent in Indian cinema, so much so, that the "modest women" trope has become an aberration. Everything changes with time.

@@Ayisha4889 actually 😀 The concept of "modesty" and "well behaved women" is not part of Indian culture. This has been enforced upon us by Britishers and Mughal invaders (who brought upon the parada system) Look at ancient temples: many of them have "indecently dressed women" in "vulgar, sexual" poses. The hatred and conservative mindset towards women and sex is something we have adopted from the west.

What I like about this isn’t the Vamp character being completely moralized because a lot of this is still questionable, it’s the fact that the MC is finally realistic with actual flaws and not the perfect Mary Sue which Bollywood feeds off of and makes no effort to change. The female lead actually had a prominent role in the story other than just smiling and dancing for 3 hours.
