Fun fact: Mach 80 is about 61,000 miles per hour(~99,000 kilometers per hour), meaning that we could get from New York to London in just 3.5 minutes; actually, it would be so fast that we could end up flying out of the Earth’s gravity, and escape the blue planet entirely since we would be traveling around 2.5 times faster than the escape velocity of the Earth.

@@aurboda I suppose that we use air/the speed of sound as a reference point for speed. For example, I could say that x motorcycle is as fast as y car, even if they're not racing each other.

I wanted to do the math for fun. If all momentum was conserved and your plane hit a 1 trillion kg mountain at 5488 m/s (mach 16), your jet at 60,000kg would accelerate the whole mountain to a speed of 0.33 m/s lol

SR-71 Blackbird is the fastest aeroplane at Mach 3.3 The X-15 is a ROCKET Propelled Aeroplane, so technically the SR-71 is really the fastest aeroplane built as the X-15 falls under rocket aircraft.

The record doesn't distinguish between propulsion methods actually. It does distinguish between production aircraft flying in normal configuration, and modified, one off, or test aircraft records. The X-15 was a one off non production aircraft for scientific testing. That's why the SR-71 has the sustained altitude record, while the the F-15 and MiG-25 have the absolute altitude record much higher because it was done in a zoom climb, while the F-15 got higher it was in a modified state for the record attempt. The MiG was stock.

I have X-Plane 9 And I have built and modified tons of planes. You can import planes from older versions of X-Plane into newer versions of the game. If you go on the forums there's a place to find all the uploaded airplanes. Some super detailed and awesome aircraft. And many, many insane projects people have made. I have to upload my own creations. I made a B-52 with a wingspan of 1 kilometer. It stalls at something like 8 knots. I also found a way to alter the fuel consumption so that engines run longer on available fuel. With this trick I made a 12 foot long airplane with 500,000 lb of thrust from its rocket engine. The 6 gallon fuel tank lasts 90 seconds. I've been able to reach orbit in 5 seconds. But not sure how fast that is.

I also built a kilometer long airship. And a flying wing airplane with a 900 foot wingspan. It was meant as a flying aircraft carrier. But I never was able to try landing on it. Also, did you know that a Sopwith Camel with 500hp can accelerate vertically?

The top speed was around 80 Mach. 1 Mach is 1188 km/h so 1188 X 80 = 95.040 km/h which is fast but still a bit compared to the speed of light (around 299 792 458 000 km/h). The speed of light is 252350553 259⁄297 Mach for comparison with 90 Mach.
