@@eskobrazy623 The unwritten rule is basically when you're up at the end of the game and there's no real chance for the other team to come back (ex: 1st clip, the thunder are up 5 with 4 seconds left), you just run out the clock and end the game. It's more of a courtesy thing and if you break it, the other team tends to get in your face about it or you'll hear about it from your teammates later.

Actually they enforced the unwritten rule much more mercilessly. You might have someone meet you in the hallway post-game, or the NEXT game might feature some really hard fouls & generally poor treatment. Everything that happened UNTIL the game was sealed with seconds left was fair game. Therexs a practical reason for the rules: to have guys STAY HEALTHY. Games that are out of reach tend to get sloppy. If there is 5 seconds left & you're up by 5, just shut it down, otherwise, to have the other team going all out to stop you will certainly result in injuries. And ALL athletes are sensitive about getting injured when it was a meaningless situation.

For those who don't understand The most generally accepted unwritten rule of basketball is that if your team is far ahead late in the fourth quarter and the shot clock is turned off, you don't drive to the bucket and dunk. It's like unnecessary salt in the wound of a beatdown.

@H.I.M if there is only a few seconds left and there is more than a one score difference, it is generally considered good etiquette to dribble the ball until time expires. Purposely trying to score when the other team doesn't even try to defend is considered bad form. It's not a big deal though.

My grandpa told me a story about when he was umpiring in Low A minor leagues about how a team made a 12-13 run comeback. He said after the game that the losing manager stormed out of the dugout and chewed him out as if it was his fault. My grandfather calmly told him, “you take your issues with your guys because if the comeback team didn’t stop playing to win then why should I stop umpiring to help you out?”. Since then he’s always told me that there’s no such thing as “running up a score” because there’s a game to be played and you play until the final buzzer goes off.

I concur. It makes people want to learn how to be better when they get completely stomped. I remember losing in soccer to a team that came with mismatching uniforms and some in jean shorts and just wrecked us. Made me want to be better! Now when i am coaching I tell the kids the exact same thing. Sport is for you to be the best you can be and improve yourself - do it with sportsmanship but we don't just "stop playing" cause the other team ain't with it. Perhaps if it's like a guy vs. girl thing then yes (although i might get hate for saying that these days, lol).

Sportmanship. If your only goal is to win sure go ahead and score even if the game is already over. But sportmanship is important in a team game. Since it’s not a 1vs1, it’s 5vs5 and the way your teammates see you will affect they’re play

The unwritten rule is that you're not supposed to score because that prolongs the game more. I feel like they're mainly mad that they got there ass whooped all game and use this as an excuse to let out there frustration

Heat took the spurs soul in the last minute of game 6. Game ain't over til it's over. When ahead, get MORE ahead: don't just put a nail in the coffin, pour cement over it. I've seen games blown when a team ahead gets lazy n sloppy on the defensive end

You dont stop playing until the clock runs out. Another reason why the Chicago Bulls in the 90s were so dominate was because they didnt stop playing. Chicago could be up 25points with 9 seconds left, and Jordan would make a steal on inbound pass and dunk the shit out of it. And then the rest of the squad would full court press... with 5 seconds left. That was another reason why the bulls were so good, they were ruthless and made sure everyone knew every game that they were the best, nobody had a easy game

@@motrellmorrid543 hm. i watched an awful lot of basketball without seeing anything like that. in fact, phil pulled his stars when games were decided so as not to risk injury. he was a realist more than anything. every so often he would do something to drive a point home as a matter of psychological warfare (like if someone gave them bulletin board material), but he was more concerned about player safety--for the sake of the team's long term goals.

uhh, i would love to see multiple examples of that, b/c when his teams were up that much, he's pulling the stars and putting scrubs in. he didn't sacrifice team goals in order to "prove" they were the best. did it w/the bulls, definitely did that with the lakers. every time the lakers were up 20 or so late, he pulled kobe (and shaq). remember when kobe outscored the dallas mavericks all by himself through 3 quarters? kobe never even ssaw a SECOND of 4th quarter minutes. while there are exceptions to every rule, the existence of an exception does not nullify the truth of the rule.
