Remember - Walkin’ in the Sand - one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. Mary Weiss sang it years later on a telethon here on KZfaq and does it beautifully. A huge talented group in the 60’s - worthy of a tribute. Thank you!

I remember hearing "walking" at a young age and it was so different and cool and scary at the same time...does that make sense?
@Daisnap4 ай бұрын
@@thebreakroom4658 Yes, makes total sense! It was all of those this to me, too. Very atmospheric, intimate, sensual...then when the loud chords hit and her volume rises to passionately sing "Whatever Happened To...", etc. it becomes scary high drama! This song has everything!

Give the Shangri-las credit: their voices, especially Mary's, were incredible!; but, give Morton his credit. He took them where no other producer, including Phil Spector, was going with girl groups...into the darker, more dramatic aspects of the youth culture of those years. She was in and out of several marriages and, who knows how many, other relationships. I really hope Mary found genuine love and peace before she left us💘💔.

So sad to learn of her passing, and just after I had discovered her outstanding album Dangerous Game. The Shangri-La's influence in glam, punk, new-wave and hard rock was insane for a 60a girl group. The New York Dolls, Aerosmith, The Ramones (Mary said she was proud that Joey Ramone told her at CBGBs that she was a huge influence on him), Blondie, The B-52s, The Grease Soundtrack ("tell me more") The Patti Smith Group, The Damned, Joe Jackson, Johnny Thunders, Twisted Sister, The Donnas...the list of bands who were influenced by and/or covered the Shangs is just insane. RIP Mary!

Mary also did radio spots that were advice for teen girls, probably before the make up ads. Betty didn’t perform with the group while she was pregnant, possibly because they wanted to hide it, she wasn’t married. One of the biggest reasons they fell apart had to do with all of the bad contracts Mary and Betty’s mother signed.

Hearing the Revlon ad was precious. Love Mary's voice. Afraid that wonderful classic accent disappears further with each new demographic generation. Never heard that ad before. Thanks for sharing. l took a Shangri-Las deep dive four years ago. l thought oh good Mary Weiss is only 71. Very sad to hear of her passing. Your video was a good obituary.

Mary Weiss, man what a wonderful powerful voice she had. Her voice was so unusual. She had this voice when she was only 15 or 16. Just incredible was her talent. I love all their songs. I remember being about 11 & 12 and I thought Betty had this beautiful baby face. I wanted to look like her when I grew up. The whole group could really, really sing.

Love the Shangri-las, I got a couple autographs from mary 2 years ago, then the page was gone when I wanted to purchase a 45 record, I figured something had happened to her, so sad, she smoked all her life since about 15, she passed away from COPD sadly 😢

NEW SUBSCRIBER. Great insight on Mary. Raised in that early era 50s & 60s working on a 1400 acre Michigan farm. Listened via my 9 volt battery transistor AM radio on earphone. Batteries were expensive too.

Great story, Marty. FYI, Goulet forgot the lyrics to the National Anthem before the Muhammad Ali - Sonny Liston fight, 25 May 1965. He joked he was Canadian, so he could be forgiven.

@@georgegunzerath489 You can not prove your false assumption. The Weiss and Ganser sisters went to Catholic grammar school before Andrew Jackson High. The great songwriters tended to be Jewish but not necessarily the girl group singers. Not that it matters anyway.
