As an official/referee myself, I can say this: The rules also state that if/when in doubt while deciding if a swimmer is DQed or not, you need to decide in favor of the swimmer. So many DQs are def not necessary. ... this is the first time I'm seeing such DQs. Even when you're sprinting BR there's turbulence. Double dolphin kick when entering first into the water is more likely.

I am also an official (in Spain), I saw some of my officials colleagues dq for that reason for that tiny drop which is definitely not a propulsion kick, but the are some officials which don't decide in favour of the swimmer, they see movement and that's enough for them and I am talking about LEN officials. I am a swimmer as well and try to decide in favour of the swimmer, as swimmers we all know what's a kick and what's not a kick, but some officials only think about the rule -> movement -> illegal..

As an official I am torn. It all boils down to using video to initiate calls. On one hand that seems extreme to me since part of officiating is judging fairly and therefore not seeing every little thing 💯 of the time. On the other hand, if this is the method they are using in Fukuoka it only seems fair to use the same standard for our trials. I will say, I have seen this become a problem over the last few years with age group swimmers being coached to have the extra dolphin kick. It is rarely called even when obvious in my area. In fact, my daughter just lost a race to a girl with a very obvious second dolphin kick after the finish of the breastroke kick cycle-a deliberate up and down motion breaking the surface of the water. It is happening, and not all swimmers are innocent/unknowing in using this technique.

Wow, this new underwater footage is really a big deal. I wonder if this will also happen at the world champs. I also agree with what you are said about the small movement. As a breaststroker myself, i tend to ungulate more when i swim the 200m breast and think there should be a rule saying that your legs are only allowed to move 5-10 degrees before it is counted as a DQ.

the issue with your proposed idea is that it then becomes something that is up to interpretation by the officials, and may not stay consistent between comps and different officials

My son was one of the 30. Said there was one UW judge for every 2 lanes and a confirming judge. He was able to get a copy of the film. He had no idea he had the downward movement that was seen. Was it there? Yes. Propulsive? Prob not. Needs to be cleaned up, though. No doubt.

One of the best coaches I ever had who coached Katie Meile said that breaststroke was about how much dolfin action you could have without getting disqualified.
@andrewkirkwood2904
@andrewkirkwood2904 11 ай бұрын
This one could be easy to set straight … if there is ANY knee bend on the undulation between kicks you are generating forward propulsion and should be disqualified. If the knees stay straight/extended on the undulation it is likely a natural consequence of the undulation and trying to keep your hips up as you start your pull - I would let that one go. There were also a few swimmers that were doing a flutter kick to keep/get their hips up - there appeared to be a subtle knee bend there too, but regardless that should be a DQ also

I completely agree with you 😊 I was very lucky that one of my team members took my time on a 50 breast during practice before I started competing and she told me I added a small dolphing kick after every br kick. I didn't know, but I noticed that swimming without it made me a lot slower 😅 Luckily I'm faster now in the completely legal way 😊 I thank her for that ❤️

Hey Cody! Great vid (as always). I agree with you on this, I think consistency across the board needs to be implemented to ensure fairness for all. Something else I find interesting is that in the other 3 strokes, there doesn't seem to be as many little nuances of the stroke that make it so easy to get disqualified. For example, Dressel seems to breakout in freestyle with one more dolphin kick, while other pro swimmers are beginning to flutter kick. That's allowed, and also could be a faster/more advantageous way to swim. Why is it that in breaststroke, the difference between being disqualified or not is so minor...that we have swimmers being DQ'd and aren't even aware they're doing anything illegal? Is it because breaststroke is just such a different/technical stroke that there needs to be more strict rules on how the stroke is swam? This video brought up a lot of thoughts and questions for me!

It is definitely a gray area and could use an official statement. But technically that upward motion is a propulsion not generated from the clap of the kick. It is like half a butterfly kick since there is no downward kick, I would say so long as the legs dont drop below the neutral position after the upward motion it should be ok.

As a competitive breaststroke swimmer, I have encountered similar issues, particularly when attempting to swim the 200m breaststroke. Following the glide, I have observed that my legs tend to lower slightly, and the ensuing kick resembles a dolphin kick, which occurs unintentionally. This happens when I glide and endeavor to lift my hands out of the water for the next stroke. Breaststroke is an intricate combination of tempo and rhythm, and losing your tempo can lead to this issue while swimming. Speed and agility are a chain of rhythm and technique, and if you lose your tempo, this situation may arise. While swimming breaststroke slowly, I have experienced this issue. I am grateful for your assistance, @Cody Miller.

It's basic movement concepts... when swimming breaststroke the swimmer is lunging forward and slightly down. The normal flow of movement is for the body to follow that curved line, resulting in the feet coming up. Then, as lift occurs, the hips drop, causing the feet to follow suit. The bigger the breaststroker, the bigger the force that is created Based off how it was officiated, Phelps and Lochte and much of the 2016 200 IM final would have been DQ'd. However, the intent is to remove those purposefully kicking, which you can tell whether or not it is on purpose by simply watching the end of the feet. If they are falling, that is a natural body movement through the water. If they are delaying the movement to generate force, most people can recognize that.

Stroke and turn judges that initially make that call, are typically viewing from the end of the lane as the swimmer approaches and leaves. It is almost impossible to determine a propulsive butterfly kick from that angle unless you view both the propulsive up and down kick - otherwise it is up for debate as to whether it was truly a "kick" or an adjustment/upsweep to set up your kick. The only time I have comfortably made a dq call pertaining to this (after carefully consider the benefit of doubt benefiting the swimmer) was for multiple dolphin kicks on start/turn prior to arms separating. I am also a former competitive swimmer, and coach - I wish all officials would have some in water experience - but honestly the bulk of them do not.
@hanacarina
@hanacarina 11 ай бұрын
Agree-I feel like the only way you could confidently make this call (without underwater video of course) is if you are lead-walking the side of the pool deck. Viewing from a start or turn end jurisdiction would not allow you to identify deliberate motion vs. natural undulation.

@dalenesbitt 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, the turbulence at the end of the propulsive kick can really look like a dolphin kick. The stroke judge has to watch carefully, and if they don't see any oscillating movement then the swimmer is legal. It's really easy for a judge to look for results of illegal movement, rather than the illegal movement itself.

Even at the summer age group championships in southern cali, my swimmer got dq for that very “subtle” drop after he kick when he glided. He wasn’t trying to do dolphin kick at all. He got dq for prelims for the 50m breast. During 100m prelims, didn’t get dq, but got dq in 100m finals. Very weird and questionable.

“Pink” indicates a certain effort/intensity that you can keep yourself accountable by measuring with heart rate. If they are using the same system that I used while coaching, it’s a lower intensity zone with 20-25 heart rate (measuring your HR for 10 seconds to get the number) and short rest of 10-20 seconds.

I was always under the impression that if your feet dropped as a result of your body motion, that was legal. And it became illegal when there was independent leg motion that was actually propulsive.
@jasperwilliams2085
@jasperwilliams2085 11 ай бұрын
Your feet will naturally drop are you produce lift with your arms this will lift your body at some point the feet will need to drop as the head does. If not you would end up flying. I think it’s only necessary on the starts , and maybe go if the poolside officially thinks it a disqualification, then it’s a review to decide. If that’s correct. When I have judged the first question when you write the report , any spelling, uncertainty the swimmer gets benefit of doubt, you have to be certain (100%) there are some examples of peoples clearly dolphin kicking at the end , but are often the middle lanes so you struggle to see from the side. When we spoke about back in 2016(think) it was thrown around that the past ten record if you watch the underwater footage they all double fly kicked on the start. But we said image a final of an Olympics where there’s a world record time and one stroke out of 50 plus they have a minor drop of the legs and the official, look in slow motion to see, then it would seem farcical to DQ, that’s also why it takes so long they aren’t watching in real time. …….

I don’t know of another sport that uses video replays to make the initial call, only to challenge or confirm the call. We should just take people out of making calls, feed video into AI and let it make the call with high speed cameras to catch everything including non simultaneous hand movements, we should be able to DQ almost everyone!

When underwater footage is shown, I see dolfin kicks regularly..some super obvious, with no dqs..do I think swimmers should be warned..eh? Not really, coaches need to video their athletes, and the swimmers need to see what they are doing before the meet..this is on the coaches.. Once the swimmers realized what was happening at Nats, the DQs came back to normal range..what I also noticed was some swimmers surged into their finishes, with a dolfin kick.
@sofiabrys
@sofiabrys 11 ай бұрын
I personally think the DQs were unfair especially because if you look at the underwater shot during the women's 50 breast you can see that Lily King has the same type of dolphin kick propulsion after each breaststroke kick. Granted, I don't think she was trying to cheat, however, I find it interesting that she didn't get DQed and some of the other athletes did for the same reason.

Seriously. If it is almost impossible to tell whether it's a dolphin kick, then it shouldn't be a DQ. Why not allow the dolphin kick anyway if it's faster and within the same spirit of the breaststroke kick?
@davidguthrie3739
@davidguthrie3739 11 ай бұрын
When you start the pull and draw the hips forward, the body tilts like a teeter totter and the feet tend to drop. This isn’t a propulsive dolphin kick. Getting blindsided by a DQ at a taper meet is one of the worst things a swimmer can experience. Ruins an entire season.
@andreizelchenko934
@andreizelchenko934 11 ай бұрын
Be honest😊. These all are small and big cheats. Even me, as and adult beginner, can keep my hips and feets high and in line during gliding. This is obvious propulsion generated by feet as half of dolphin kick. What Cody showed - is slow lowering of the feet. But they do it faster and it creates propulsion.

If the crowd wasn't booing the officials, who were they booing at? If it was just booing the situation, it was still a situation that the officials created. I'm also a little confused about the "consistency" issue. If this is the first meet they implemented this technique of initiating dq's via the underwater camera, how is there a lack of consistency? Also, obviously this will NOT be a thing w/"lesser" level meets, as they won't have the ability to use underwater cameras (finances, logistics). USA swimming needs to be very transparent as to which meets will utilize this (i.e. all pro- level meets, all national meets, all international trials meets). Will that mean some athletes will know at which meets they can cheat? Yes, but there's nothing to be done about that right now. I totally agree about the 60-second rule and USA swimming MUST have more judges doing this - preferably one per lane per swim. IF USA Swimming had made this change clear to the coaches w/plenty of time, that's on the coaches who didn't use underwater cameras to check their swimmers during practice (which, let's face it, the best programs DO have already). But the amount of dq's was disheartening at best.

8:40: only a stupid person would admit to cheating lol, really terrible justification for people being mad. It’s either intentionally or they’re making the mistake in training and built a bad habit. And not all meets have the capacity to have officials review underwater footage, hence the consistency problem. But I’ve been to a fair amount of meets in my day, and officials, especially in Indiana, let a lot of breaststroke calls go. I’m happy they are now finally putting people on blast because people are gonna know what to do and not do in breaststroke. I don’t like this advocacy for people that are most likely cheating. Kieran smith did the same thing, the officials are just doing their jobs.

Also, I remember in high school when watching breaststroke there are so many people that did blatant dolphin kicks, either extra ones in the pullout or doing them during the stroke itself, and lots of those swimmers became d1 swimmers. I think coaches when recruiting should watch and make sure the swimmer they pick isn’t doing that so their team isn’t at risk. Abs one of the swimmers that I watched cheat numerous times goes to IU
