Do you have chronic pain in your back or your knees? Maybe you suffer from chronic arthritic pain? Or generalized pain from an autoimmune condition, such as fibromyalgia? If you’re taking ibuprofen or even prescription painkillers daily, and you’re trying to figure out how to manage your pain in a more natural way, this video is for you.
In this video we’ll share some of the key scientific findings around breathing exercises and pain management, followed by a very simple breathing practice that you can try at home to see if it might offer you some pain relief.

WHAT IS CHRONIC PAIN?
It's helpful to separate pain into two different buckets. Most pain is adaptive pain. It doesn't feel good, but it's there to keep us safe. This is called nociception - the ability for us to sense and react to negative stimuli in our environment. For example, burning your hand on a hot pan.
If that pain were to linger for months after that initial minor burn, however, it would become what’s called maladaptive pain. This rarely happens with something like an epidermal burn, but it happens very often with joint pain and autoimmune conditions. It’s almost as though a fire alarm is going off in your body, but there’s no longer a fire. This is the type of pain we might categorize as chronic and breathing exercises have shown to be very effective in helping to ease this type of pain.

BEST PRACTICES
The only contraindication for this style of breathing is that it can make you sleepy. So, you shouldn't do this while you're driving or while operating machinery. And you should always make sure that you’re sitting down and in a safe environment.

I have fibromyalgia. 15 years off and on. Refuse pain meds because I believe there are other ways to deal with this. Today i found a new tool! Loved the breathing!!! Surely God guided me here as I'm at my threshold. Much love to you and the servive you bring!

Thank you, that felt great. I've got a lot wrong with my spine and yoga and acupuncture are the only things that have given me any kind of pain relief. I'm almost finished my yoga teacher training and I'm going to bring to those who are in the same boat as me. I was extremely fortunate to have a wonderful yoga teacher and only had a couple of bad experiences with a woman who covered for her a couple of times. That was my light bulb moment, there's no other yoga teacher offering what I am where I live. I'm hopeful that I will be successful but more importantly, I just want to help others. Thank you for this. Having nerve pain in my mouth and face since having COVID. Called trigeminal neuroglia. Of course pain medicine has been prescribed, but pain persists. Looking forward to good results with this! Prayers of friends help as well. Much appreciated.

Is the demostrated amount sufficient enough to have an effect? Or should the exercise last longer? 5min? 10min? 15min?

About time someone gives people an alternative to drugs, this should be the first thing drs should prescribed for patients but No they dish out drugs instead which screws your natural healing ability up. My sister takes 26 Tablets for chronic pain. Drs treat the symptoms and not the cause. It really annoys me😤🤬

I'm dealing with my dysfunctional nervous system right now which gave me chronic pain after my spinal injury. The doctors drug me up and gave me Gabapentin, which has unlimited side effects. The doctors in the hospital when I was there took too long to give me it even though it doesn't work. I still have to take it before I had a withdrawal seizure which I had one on new years eve. Nobody helped me during it at that time except a visiting family member who saw me and call for help. These doctors will mess you up with drugs. They didn't even check for drug interactions. Just literally poke you up to the point you get a panic attack.

Look, I get your point. I really do. But situations vary. No one is going to simply breathe their way out of severe chronic pain.

Thanks for this video. Dealing with extreme pain all over my body and stomach issues. Hope this will give me some relief. One question: I just can’t exhale the full 8 seconds. I’m at the end of my exhale after 5 seconds and can’t seem to prolong it. Any tips?

Oh and also: is a tingling sensation normal while doing this exercise? I normally only experience this When I hyperventilate, so it feels like I’m doing something wrong 😅

Put one hand on your chest and one on your stomach, when you breath in you should only feel your stomach filling up with air not your chest.

Getting PRP injections tomorrow ...any info or feedback ...hip osteoarthritis...mild low back problem ... MRI is moderate in left hip mild in right... love your yoga crawl etc.... helps a lot.... thanks

I take 8 breaths in and 16 out by mouth for 30 minutes and than the stiffness is gone in my right hip/back

My right hand middle finger is stiff / tight through out the day & becomes more stiff while sleeping at night. This stiffness even wakes me up. I'm able to fold & open my fingers & do my regular activity. Kindly help me out with a breathing technique to be relieved of this

Pain usually has emotional root causes. When the trapped emotion is released pain goes away.By targeting the root cause we are listening to our body. Otherwise it finds other ways to get our attention by giving us diseases and health issues.

I would say "can have" not "usually has"... many people just get a physical injury, but I will agree that mental/emotional stress certain manifests physically sometimes.
