Breathing in Nature and History - Hike to ASBESTOS COTTAGE. Kahurangi National Park.

Sam teams up with his son Harry to head back in history and into Kahurangi National Park on a day hike to Asbestos Cottage. Sam covers some of story of Henry Chaffey and Annie Fox who lived in the hut for 40 years that was originally built in 1897.

There was once a sign a distance from the cottage alerting Annie to visitors; "Stand here and shout"....their doorbell.

Yes I also read about that somewhere too. Would have been a very interesting place to visit when they were actually living there.

As well as Jim Henderson's excellent book 'The Exiles of Asbestos Cottage', you would find Gerard Hindmarsh's books Kahurangi Calling' and 'Kahurangi Stories' interesting - they both feature the fascinating Chaffeys. I haven't read his latest 'Kahurangi Out West' but I'd be surprised if the Chaffeys aren't in there too. Great video - well done :)

Thanks Greg, appreciate the info on the books. I love the Kahurangi area so I’ll try to track those books down. I tend to rely on the book ‘Shelter from the Storm’ for information and inspiration as well.

Thanks for the vid - lovely respectful coverage of an interesting part of our history. Jim Henderson of Takaka (author and presenter of Open Country on National Radio) wrote a book about the Chaffeys that may be available in local libraries: "The Exiles of Asbestos Cottage". As with everything Jim did, it is a good read.

Thanks, I haven’t read that book but I had heard of it. I’ll try to track it down. It’s an amazing story of resilience and what must have been a pretty tough but happy existence. The whole asbestos mine area is also a very interesting aspect particularly given what we now know about it!
