I wish I had saved more superlatives and outstanding comments from prior reviews for this one. What a superior effort of highlighting a beautiful part of the northwest and how the railroads overcame the challenge of the topography. The quality of your work, the music selection, and the information from the narrative just combine for such a unique presentation, almost just an artistic work of art!! Especially the reflection segment on the water. I never think you can create something better, and consistently you do just that!! You have earned and deserve so much of a larger subscription base. I guess people just love crazy drama etc., not natural beauty and artistic talent so much anymore. Please continue, all of us appreciate what you create!!

As stated already-we’re running out of adjectives to describe your work. Your editing and voice overs are a great enhancement and thanks for taking the time. As you flew over the upper portion of the Ayer all I could think of was how much dynamite was needed to blast through that rock. The abandoned town of Ayer, WA was established as a crew change point halfway between Hermiston, OR (before the days of Hinkle) and Spokane or Wallace/Kellogg. The motivation to originally build this line was to reach the mines of Northern Idaho. In fact for many decades there was only one train per day, each direction , on the Spokane International between Spokane and Canada. Now that’s greatly changed with UP and CPKC heavy into PSR. Lastly I pity the conductor who may have to walk their train because of a mechanical issue. Thanks again for making my day!
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 23 күн бұрын
Ha thanks Bill I appreciate that. I did not know that about the mines in Idaho, very neat! Yes traffic these days is pretty decent on the line. I have even been told CP wants to send UP more trains then they do but UP won't let them.

The Union Pacific's Ayers Subdivision is a beautiful piece of railroad with its spectacular winding way along the Palouse, Snake and Columbia Rivers. The drone footage along the route captured the beauty of the landscape. I especially liked the passage of the train with the Palouse River Falls and the tranquil scene along the Snake River with the mirror like reflection of the train. You use the drone to bring out the power of the trains and the beauty of the scenery that the train is traveling through. Thank you, Dan, for documenting these trains as they traveled on the Ayers Subdivision and for making it possible for most of your viewers to enjoy a portion of the Union Pacific Railroad that we will never have the opportunity to view in person.

Thanks! Man, where do I begin. So much eye candy and treats in this one. Probably the most awesome video you have posted so far. Rugged, indeed. Tunnel 17 and surrounding area, backing up at 45mph! Cow Creek viaduct, 4 mile chase! amazing train trench and river canyon, and that awesome Palouse Falls, my white whale. I have been close a few times but never made it there. I didn’t have a drone at the time anyway. Seeing all those tunnels and trenches and viaducts including the Joso viaduct I can’t help but marvel at what it must’ve taken to build that line. The reflection footage along the Snake River, with the train, the sky and the clouds, is absolutely amazing and the icing on the cake. I really enjoy all the graphics pointing things out and I love seeing you and your parking places for flying. Wow, I could just go on and on, but I run out of superlatives and wind up repeating myself. Your videos certainly appeal to rail fans and flyers both. Keep it up, sir. 🖖

For me, in the UK, seeing all those huge expanses of land with hardly any human activity or occupation visible is an almost spiritual experience. Yet another fantastic Railfan Dan production! As for ruggedness I think a line over in British Columbia could compete. The Kettle Valley Railrod, known as McCullochs wonder. Unfortunately like the SP&S upper part the KVR has long since been abondend by the CP.

Thanks so much and yes I wouldn't argue this as the most rugged railroad in all of North America just the Northwest of the States.

Thank you so much Valerie you're too kind! I can indeed confirm I do spend a lot of time on Google Maps finding locations where I can stand and operate the drone to film specific locations. That's a major part of it for me. I'm so glad you're enjoying!

Well hey thanks so much for letting me know and I'm so glad you're here! I get pretty particular about my music selection so I am glad you like it so far. The voice over work is semi new. I started that almost a year ago so anything older doesn't have voice over. I've got some playlists so it's easier to navigate specific videos if you wanted to give those a look.

Another fabulous video combining trains and scenery with impossible viewpoints through the magic of modern drones in the hands of a master. Too bad that the people that run this country is bent on denying access of such equipment to talented folks to memorialize the grandeur of our country.

I couldn't tell if the track has been removed from that abandoned line but wondered if the folks who drive the little gasoline powered railcars might use this line? Absolutely beautiful work once again Dan. The section with the falls is just stunning. Thank you.

The former SP&S rail line has had all the tracks removed for the majority of the route and has been turned into a walking trail called the Columbia Plateau Trail.

Yeah I had a feeling you were pacing that last train 😂 What a great area to view trains, as always. I honestly wish that VR would put up some live cams along the Columbia so that everyone could see just how stunningly beautiful, rugged, and busy the UP and BNSF lines are through the Gorge. The variety of power from both lines really makes both of those lines through that region perhaps the best railfanning area in the country. ...they would just need to learn how to shield the microphones against all that wind, that's all 🤣 I'm just curious on why the BNSF runs locals on that side of the river when their main is on the other side....is it because of locality of the tri-cities and a bnsf sort yard there maybe? I *think* you mentioned something about it, but im not certain. As for being the most rugged line in the northwest, that line has to be at least top three, if not number one. I could imagine how much work it took to put in Stevens Pass back in the day, with all the weather, snow, switchbacks, n all, but most of that line was heavily simplified by the installation of the cascade tunnel. With its constant grade and two switchbacks makes the line grueling as well, the Pengra Pass is very difficult too, but who knows what the region would look like sans all of the trees. I think the closest competitor to the Ayer line has got to be the Siskiyou...and even then, it's a different kind of challenge there. It's hard to a challenge 3.7% grade and tight curves like that line has, but then again, those challenges are small distance wise in comparison to the consistent rock cuts the builders had to make when constructing the Ayer sub. I don't know. You prove a great argument my friend...one that could be debated forever amongst those in the railroad/railfanning realm. GREAT, great video Dan. Perhaps my favorite from your channel to date. The reflections of the river, along with the long trestle shot really set this line apart from others, and you captured all of it perfectly. Keep up the great work!
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 21 күн бұрын
Thanks Mike! I do not know the story on the BNSF Low Line local running to Ayer but I'm wondering if it has to do with and old contract perhaps since the Camas Prairie Line used to be jointly owned by the UP and NP? That's a total guess. Yes I do indeed think the argument could end up being endless and change peoples minds who have it made up so to each their own! Glad you enjoyed this one it's one I have dreamed for for a long time. To bring all of these locations together in one video. That reflection was such a massive bonus! No boats to ripple the water or anything.

Hi Dan, what a fantastic video especially the drone footage of the surrounding area including the trains too… You’ve mentioned the old SP&S railway as well, just an idea, wouldn’t it be good if you did just a video of the old SP&S grade from Spokane to Pasco which would be cool… I’ve read many years ago that this line only ran westbound trains because of the less than 1% grade and I sometimes think, BN made the mistake of closing it when the freight business was slowly regaining its popularity as sidings had to extended on the old NP line for the increase of traffic in the area/state. Just an opinion, thanks Railfan Dan. Cheers Andrew
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 23 күн бұрын
I agree I think that would be neat. Maybe one day but this trip I just didn't have the time to make that happen. Yes I buddy told me he knew of a survey BNSF did and that they would have saved so much money on fuel over a given amount of time if they kept that line and ran trains directionally between the NP and SP&S lines.
