Rickson Gracie speaks on practicing breathwork to control your heart and mind, how diaphragmatic breathing is superior to chest breathing, and focusing on the exhalation to breathe at your full capacity.
Rickson Gracie is a Brazilian 9th-degree red belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and a retired mixed martial artist. He is a member of the Gracie family: the third-oldest son of Hélio Gracie, brother to Rorion and Relson Gracie, and half-brother to Rolker, Royce, Robin and Royler Gracie. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was widely considered to be the best fighter of the Gracie clan, and one of the toughest in the world. Man…around 2006 Rickson was teaching our class, after the warm up he said, “chuday, we gonna practix just breathing.” The place was like a sauna and for about 45 minutes, all we did was breathing exercise. Amazing man.

This guy is WAY more than a fighter. He is a sage with much wisdom. Breathing properly can transform an individual to higher levels of consciousness and cure most diseases. Wim Hof is another prime example.

These methods and more have been practiced for thousands of years in yoga. It’s not new because, Its being presented in this video. It’s been adopted by many martial arts systems. Karate styles such as Goju Ryu, kyokushin and many others utilize Bhastrika, kapalabhati pranayama and many others.

This is like the opposite to Wim Hof. Rickson focuses on exhale, Wim on inhale. Win’s perhaps better for health, Rickson’s perhaps for functional performance.

As nice as this sounds, the muscular part of the discussion is not precisely how the diaphragm works (or the biceps, for that matter), or at least the explanation is lacking. Your diaphragm is responsible for most of inhalation. So while it may well be true that the effectiveness of inhalation requires good exhalation, diaphragmatic breathing must, by definition, be about inhaling. Perhaps the focus ought to be on "intercostal breathing" or "abdominal breathing."

Not even close to what truly happened. Read his book. Same goes for Sakuraba. He showed up at the Luta Livre Academy to fight whoever, Hugo Duarte is the one who stepped up to him.
