Platys are fun fish! One thing I've noticed with all fish, when you put them outside in tubs, they just look and do so much better. Even cherry shrimp grow faster and look better when I put them outside. Can't' beat fresh air and sunshine... :)

I like the color combination. The trick to maintaining it is selection of fish that aren't too black which would hide the nice blue. I'm working to increase the yellow in the dorsals. Charles

I’ve bred and raised bettas for probably 20 years. I’ve also bred angelfish and severum. Now I find myself in middle age and in need of something fun an new. For whatever reason Platy genetics has caught eye this time around. Thanks for your video, I loved it!

I haven't raised Bettas since the 1980s. I'd like to start breeding angelfish again but want breeders that will successfully rear their own fry. We just got some gold severums that I'll set up for spawning soon. Platys are interesting fish. There is much opportunity for color and color pattern selection. We will start working our platy strains next week and make videos of them. Charles

There are very nice color varieties of maculatus and variatus type platies. The mickey mouse pattern has interesting genetics. I'll do a video on that someday soon. Charles

On the contrary, we intensively inbreed. That let's us cull bad recessives while concentrating desired characteristics. I suppose I should do a video on this. Charles

They like a bit cooler than 84F but do find in the summer in our greenhouses when water temperatures exceed that. Charles

I am curious Charles, I know you have experience with many species of cichlid and livebearer as well as rainbow fish, but is there anything out there that you haven't kept or bred but would like to try if you got the opportunity? To my knowledge you have been keeping those fish for ages, of course you would want fish compatible with the system so you don't need to worry about a separate system. The breeders are gorgeous by the way and I would love fish like that, where I am all the mollies are orange, black or a combination unless i special order them and even then they tend to come in from brackish water and don't do very well.

Those are actually Redtail Blue Tuxedo Variatus. The name has been corrected. I'm willing to try most fish. Our water is very hard with a high pH, but we can collect a lot of rainwater to spawn soft water fish, many of which can only hatch in soft water but grow better in hard water once hatched. Charles

@@goliadfarms7029 Oh that makes sense that they are variatus because they look like a platy more than a molly, blue mollies are hard to find arent they? anyway not a livebearer guy since they tend to do poorly in my water. but on the other hand the pH dictating hatching does make sense, especially since many fish live in places where the water level and pH vary over the year.

We select for size in our fish. That is an interesting question. Similar to why the gene in humans that provides resistance to malaria also causes sickle cell anemia. Charles

I have kept Variatus outside in ponds with a little well water at 73F tricking in over winter here. I think with selection they could handle 45F water. Charles

Don’t want to split hairs here, but wouldn’t 33% of offspring come out shortfin (given that 25% of embryos has the allele twice and dies, 50% has it once and comes out highfin, and 25% doesnt have it and comes out shortfin)? Apologies if I misunderstood!

You are correct when looking at the Simpson hifin allele which is a homozygous lethal. When mating two Simpson hifins you'd on average yield 2 hifins to one normal. Charles
