Breeding Reblooming Hydrangea macrophylla and the Evolution of the Endless Summer® Series

This video offers insights into the development of remontant or reblooming Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars. Prior to 2004, the word was never spoken in reference to the flowering process of Hydrangea macrophylla. The introduction of Endless Summer® The Original® proved a transformational moment in the advancement of H. macrophylla into everyday commerce. There are now six true remontant H. macrophylla cultivars in the Endless Summer® series. They are all featured in this video. There is also a segment that shows/discusses the process of breeding for remontancy/reblooming.
The breeding for remontancy took place at the Department of Horticulture, University of Georgia, Athens, GA, and at Plant Introductions, Inc., Watkinsville, GA. The video discusses/shows the contributions of both entities in this remarkable advancement in Hydrangea breeding.
Plant Introductions, Inc. was sold to Bailey Nurseries in 2015 followed by a five year non-compete. On January 1, 2020, a new entity Premier Introductions, Inc. was established to continue the work.

Excellent information on these hydrangeas. I tried with endless summer for 3 years and 3 different plants and none survived until I bought another and put it to grow in my microclimate and it survived the winters now 3 years in a row here in the windy city.

Recently planted a Bloomstruck at my Dad’s house (zone 6b Toronto area). They had it labelled as “Purple Bloomstruck” but sounds like your Deep Purple variety isn’t on the retail market yet so it must’ve been the original Bloomstruck. I took a chance by positioning it in a little more sun than I typically would a macrophylla (it’s an area that panicles would likely do fine in but I felt I was rolling the dice with this type.) It wilted during the first few weeks and I thought she was a goner but, thankfully, it was just a bit of transplant shock (which happens, especially planting in the high heat of summer). She’s doing great now! Healthy, strong and yes, lots of re-blooms. And even with all of our rain this summer, the stalks are holding up the big blooms just fine. (Whereas our Annabelle’s, for example, are all hanging on the ground). I’m buying another Bloomstruck so they’ll flank a dark purple smokebush. Great job - this is an excellent hydrangea. I’m really pleased. Oh, and I love the deep colour of the stems. Adds even more colour contrast & personality.

Hello Dr. Dirr! Do you remember, during one of your sabbaticals at the Arnold, grabbing a couple of bikes and riding around with a young hort nerd (and groupie) that just happened to be there that day, and checking out the various Clethra alnifolia that were in flower? I'm that hort nerd! I'm a semi-retired LD now, living in Oregon, previously in Seattle, where Keith Warrens Sister was and still is (remotely) my best client!

@@DrMichaelADirr was wondering when the Hydrangea Show Stopper will be available and where? I've looked online and checked several Home Depot's and could not find them. I asked the grower you mentioned; on their website, but they never responded back.

Although the information was of great interest to us it was a struggle to hear the audio. For the future, please consider improving the sound quality. Thanks for your overview of recent hydrangea offerings.

Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you to both of you! Your wife did a great job on filming and catching all the beautiful flowers close up! I watch on my phone and had volume turned all the way up, but I still had to hold the phone to my ear, and away to look at the flowers! I know you are new and will improve over time. Suggestion … maybe get a microphone? Can you please list the fertilizer’s and when and how you apply them in the comments sections of video’s would be very helpful and greatly appreciated! Question… I have a pink summer crush that has been planted for 3 years now and it’s very small, beautiful green foliage, but it has never bloom for me??? It was in bloom when I bought it. Planted in ground and gets morning and afternoon sun until around 3. It’s in a fairly always moist spot to. I have fly soil but when I planted it I dug a huge hole and used a mixture of black cow , and some clay, top soil and expert gardening soil all mixed up so it has good drainage. It’s close to a pine tree so was afraid to put any soil acidification around it. In early spring when it started breaking dormancy, I do add some 10-10-10 granular around everything. Can you please help. Thinking about moving it to a different location

Why do I see so many hydrangeas in full sun? All the research I’ve done says mostly shade, but I see hydrangeas in full sun all the time…even proven winners has theirs in full sun in their trial garden. Mine are in morning sun, probably about 4 hours or so….and now I’m worried they aren’t getting enough sun…
