In this video I lay out in detail how I spawned the Pacific Blue Eye Rainbow Fish, Pseudomugil Signifer. It is an easy fish to spawn, only two 20 gallon tanks and some plants, oh, and a group of mature adults. If you want to breed your first egg scatterer and earn more BAP points, this is the video for you!

i love these. some people say they are less colourful than other pseudomugils. but the northern variety (i believe most signifer in the aquatic pet trade are northern subspesies because the southern ones have adapted to temperate/cold water) of pacific blue-eyes are the most outgoing pseudomugil period. probably because their natural habitat in mid-north qld is a series of very sparsely vegetated slow moving streams. they have no place and no need to hide. in the aquarium, that translates to constant top-tank shoaling and never too shy to impress people walking by. they really deserve the popularity of other sister species.

Totally agree. Mine do get a bit skittish when I first approach the tank but quickly return to go about their business. Yes, underrated Pseudomugil! Thanks for watching!

Hey Evan! Thanks so much for watching the videos. The Blue Eyes are a great group, very 'regular looking' then BAMM! They show off. Very cool. Anyways, I'd love to get your input when I put together the biotope for these fish. Thanks again!

also, if the adults throw eggs onto a mop can I just take the mop and place into a ten gallon tank with anacharis and bacopa that I have cleaned very well, and let it hatch in there. I have a little java moss to add and I can certainly buy an amazon sword, or valsneria so the tank is half filled... or do I actually need to transfer the eggs from the mop to the plants in the hatching tank. I have a lot of mops to rotate. your thoughts?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, that’s what I’m doing now from my display tank to a fry tank. I just moved the mop yesterday (had the mop in with the adults for 14 days). I’ll know if it works in the next 1-7 days.

They are actually a Blue-eye not a Rainbowfish, they are in the same family but not genus, it would be like calling a human a chimp or gorilla, we are in the same family but not genus, just a bit of trivia for you, the southern forms of these are much smaller and get along much better in schools were the northern forms get much larger and are really aggressive so need much more space, I've found in a 8ft tank I can keep around 4 of the males with more females of the northern fish where with the southern ones you can keep them in a nice group in a small aquarium, the southern form seems to like spawning in vegetation in groups where the northerns one male will guard a area of about 1 metre and spawn with multiple females but in a gravel or sand bed as most places they frequent up in the northern parts of the country isn't very vegetated more of a granite rocky bed, not a lot of people keep the northern ones for this reason, they are also much bigger getting up to 90mm in some parts and probably should be split as another sub species, they live anywhere from full salt to pure fresh in there distribution, I hope this is helpful, I subbed to your channel, thanks for asking me all the questions on mine, I always love seeing people interested in our natives 🙂

Thanks for all the great info! I appreciate the clarification. Do you suppose I have the northern or southern variety? My biggest males might be 2.5 inches. I’ve also been able to keep a colony in a 20 gallon tank. They have also seemed to spawn in the plants (Java moss). Sounds like the southern variety?

@@thebiotopes Most of them kept in the aquarium are, but as you go north some of the larger ones still seem to do ok together up to around the Gladstone area or mid coast of Queensland then as you go further up they get more aggressive, I don't know why this is, maybe they have grown accustomed to having larger areas in their habitat with less options for spawning, it is amazing to see them in the wild sparing as they do it continuously, the northern ones vary a lot to, some have really large fins and others not so much, it is hard to say exactly were they come from as there are so many in their range, I my self have been up and down the east coast filming them and have still only scratched the surface, they are a very underrated fish here in Australia probably because they are so common, but I love watching the big males spar in my 8ft tank at night, ether way they are a great easy fish to look after and spawn readily, it is good to see people appreciating them, they do really well with rainbows to, mine even spar with them.

@@australianbiotopes4563 I’m building this biotope around the Signifer but would like to include Vallisineria and Aponogeton species. I’m which regions would you find these together?

@@thebiotopes The South Johnstone River near Innisfail would be the perfect example, they both grow side by side on a smooth river rock bottom, it is tidal there as well in the lower reaches where they both grow.

Doesn't your snails and shrimp eat the Pseudomugil eggs?

Hard to say for sure. Not enough to not get fry. It will be interesting because I just moved a spawning mop from the South Johnstone River biotope tank to another tank to get more Signifers. That Biotope has shrimp and snails in it. Let’s see if I get fry out of that.
