My flock is East Friesian. They’re super maternal and so far all births have been problem free. They are not as robust as other breeds I’ve raised. Hampshire, Cormo, Corriadale, and various crosses. They are docile and I believe I’ve found my Sheep Niche. Triplets are the norm and I can’t wait to have quads! That was so awesome!! Edited to fix autocorrect!

As a Kiwi or New Zealander - we had Romney's among other breeds growing up and if there any sheep that was going to do something stupid like at the last minute not go into a gateway but race towards and onto the main road among the cars and trucks it was the Romney - they are what we call here "mad bastards" but make lovely wool and meat - we also only have them in paddock eating grass or hay not barns eating grain so interesting to watch what you do

Love my Katahdins. Easy keepers and great mothers. Cross them to a Cheviot ram and the lambs grow very well on pasture and have enough fuzz on their coats at sale time to not look 100% hair sheep (wool breeds bring more in New Holland PA)

I have heard that even here in Ontario... lots of people love the Katahdin, but sometimes struggle at the salesbarns (if Facebook is to be believed... lol)

We are mix breed. We keep back also so they get very mixed. We always buy pure breed bucks though. You commented about that in a previous video. Suffolk for our market side and polypay for our maternal Right Now. But we have had Hampshire, Dorset, and many others. We are trying to bump our lamb numbers and milk up with the polypay.

Uncle's sheep are all Romney. Crazier then the mad hatters, we are mostly wool breeders. I've been run down, run over, jumped on, cornered and head butted by darn near every ewe,wether and ram on the farm. The lambs are lovely but turn bat poop crazy after they are weaned. Thanks for explaining your group.

The other thing that would be interesting to see other farms that are lambing and having kids in the last few weeks in the USA have a very high boy rate this year like 10 boys to 4 girls - interesting to see what your rate will be

Sandi, Why did you decide to go with the first flock from the steele's? Also you said you have breeds/crosses for the maternal side. Are you also tracking your terminal rams, and improving for the market side. For example..have you experimented breeding different breeds or brought in sires to get a heavier (on the hoof) lamb by market time? Sorry if I'm confusing, I'm just curious about your program and your goals. I love it!
@SandiBrock

great questions! So I bought the original Steele ewes after culling over half of my original ewes... (thats a vlog all on its own...) I got to know Eadie through a course she was convening. She showed me the importance of introducing high health genetics into your flock (wish I did this first)... they are also one of the only suppliers who could sell me those quantities at once. As for the terminal genetics and tracking genetic improvements... I guess the answer is no. I have weekly, or bi-weekly weights so wouldn't be hard to collect that info... Just haven't made it a priority yet... I would say since switching to these 3 breeds, its much easier to track differences.

How many breeding stock/ewes do you try to keep? Or do you have a future goal to increase your size?
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
So far, I'd like to keep my flock down to 450 ewes, but work on expansion through improvement of the ewes performance... So more lambs per ewe marketed through better management, systems, nutrition... Until I can prove to myself I can do that, I am not going to invest a whole lot more in actual sheep.

Hi Sandi.. why dont you just buy pure Rideau ewes and keep them as maternal breed? Use your ille de france and suffolk for market as usual and have few good Rideau rams for your flock only.. why do you want to go back to Steele? Rieau will give you high birth rate and %50 siffolk w Rideau will be good for market. Don't you think?
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
I have quite a few purebred Rideaus I've picked up before purchasing the Steele ewes... They've been productive for me, but quite honestly, I don't love them on their own. The lambs are just too small at birth. But, I do love them crossed... So each time my Rideau ewes have lambs, I also keep those crossed F1s. I guess in this video I wanted to keep it a bit simpler.

@@SandiBrock ok :) thank you.. i remember you went to Steele farm for a fair.. owner was mentioning around 270% birth rate for his breeds per year, which is hard to achieve even with Rideau with 8 months cycle. Do you know Steele breed's average birth weight? On Steele farm web page, i could not find clear information about this maternal breed. Yes, it seems like Rideau is giving maybe around 3-3.5 kgs of birth weight average. I mean with Rideau you have lots of farm in Canada, lots of options.. with Steele i believe you can only buy from 1 place..

Do you find the Steele composites are better than the Idf or the other breeds that you have?
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 5 жыл бұрын
I like this breed for their ability to lamb 2 or 3 lambs and still have good girth to them. They are good moms, but I also LOVE a good old Dorset/Rideau cross. That's still my favourite mom to work with.
