While designing tall buildings may seem glamorous and enticing, you don't want to design tall buildings, especially if you are starting out. In this video, I discuss the benefits of designing small projects which can significantly enhance your career trajectory, small projects can help you:
1. Building a Solid Foundation by gaining experience in various structural design disciplines to become a well-rounded professional.
2. Learning from Diverse Projects: Designing tall buildings can be exhilarating, but limiting your focus to a single type of structure may hinder your growth.
3. Collaboration and Networking: small simple projects allow you to network and engage with architects, contractors, and other engineers to broaden your understanding of the construction industry as a whole.
Whether you're a junior structural engineer just starting out or a seasoned professional looking to offer guidance, this video offers valuable insights and perspectives. Don't limit your potential by solely focusing on tall buildings. Expand your horizons, embrace diversity, and take your engineering career to new heights!

Sometimes small buildings are more challenging and more difficult than bigger buildings. They have as many or more problems as the bigger building, but all of these things have to be fit into a smaller space.

Agree, it makes you come up with unique solutions. Having restrictions make you to have to innovate and understand how structure behave.

I can never understand why a 30 storey building is happy to have repeatable floors to save on costs, but when you deal with 3-5 storeys every floor plan has to be different and you have endless transfer structures between floors (columns zig-zagging). But to be fair, when it achieves/enables the architectural intent, then that is actually quite satisfying.

Hi Dimvoly, it makes amazing structure. But also you are able to transfer smaller buildings with a lot of effort. While you can transfer tall buildings, I have transferred columns on 80 story building, it is very costly.

Hi Brendan, another great video. I was wondering if you could please make a video on facade engineering, I feel as though it’s a very interesting space and it is quickly gaining more attention as clients needs become more complex with more complex facades

Small buildings you can do completely on your own which makes you a much better engineer than being pidgeon-holed to a megaproject doing some secondary structures.
