For this series I’ll be taking you with me through NYC to various Music Stores. Sifting through CD’s, vinyl, and whatever else the stores have to offer. Then at the end I’ll un-bag the loot and discuss why I chose the ones I did. Come on…let’s go to the record store!

Record Runner, the original shop, used to be on Cornelia Street in the West Village. I do remember scampering off there during lunch hour at Stuyvesant High School when it was on East 15th Street to get the latest issue of Trouser Press and learn of so many new bands and artists. If i recall correctly the shop was below ground, but it did not matter to me. There were so many great shops dottted around both the West and East Village. Those were. both halcyon and hallucinogenic days/daze :)

Another cool record store video. And it's clear from this (and other) videos that you have a soft spot for 80s new wave. It's definitely one of my favorite music genres as well. You should do a video where you highlight some of your favorite new wave artists/bands and albums. Have a good one, Brendon!

It was no4 in the UK charts in 1971. You should check them out if you never heard of them. I’m sure you like them.

I grew up a few blocks away from there. There used to be my all-time favorite record store around the corner Discorama. Most cd's were $10 back in 1990s and until they closed and my brother worked there for a summer I would go every Tuesday and get all the new releases $10 apiece I was like a kid in the candy store the people even knew me there a few years ago I was walking down Christopher Street when I was visiting my mother and the guy from the record store Simon waved at me from a car window. I was surprise he even remember who I was after all these years. Boy that brought back memories.

I love that “Out Of This World” album. I had it on vinyl back in the day and would lift the needle and skip ahead to the guitar solos, which were just scorching. I think I had Norum’s “Total Control” on cassette. I’ve heard but never owned his 2nd with Glenn Hughes on vocals. I’m a huge Glenn Hughes fan. His work on the first two Phenomena albums (1985, 1987) and Hughes/Thrall (1982, with Pat Thrall) are favorites of mine.

So Greg Kihn and Joe Satriani are Bay Area rock musicians so it makes perfect sense. I know Joe is from Long Island but he has lived in Berkeley for over 30 years as he loves it there. It’s where I’m from. And hey I have a daughter who lives in Long Island. Go figure. I have seen them both. Greg in a night club and The Bay Area in the late 80’s in fact. I’ll be in. New York in May. I’ve been to that west village subway station. I missed that record store though. If you know of any excellent record stores in NYC plz let me know. Anything more mid or uptown would be good. Not sure I’ll get back to the village on my next trip. But maybe. Thx. ☮️

Sound Exchange is one of my favorite shops. I used to live near their store in St. Petersburg, but have visited the Tampa store also. Huge selection of CDs, which I love. Planet Retro is another store in St. Petersburg worth visiting, along with Bananas. Bananas has 2 locations - a warehouse with tons of vinyl, and a “retail store” with a smaller but still excellent selection of vinyl as well as CDs. I’d recommend the “retail store” for a first visit.

These are my favorite videos. Always love going to the record store, flea markets or thrift shops and searching for some genuine gems. Sometimes you'll find something quite interesting at these places, including records from regionally successful artists. But funny, I thought you would've owned "Shuttered Room" by now. I bet that vinyl record cost like $50. That one is super rare, and it's expensive. Lucky thing I have the originals, NOT remakes, of the four singles on the Fixx's "Ultimate Collection" compilation disc. Too bad you didn't buy Prism's "Small Change" record that you flashed up for us to see. That one has the band's only U.S. Top 40 hit "Don't Let Him Know," written by Bryan Adams, also a #1 Album Rock radio hit. The Greg Kihn album you bought did not chart, unfortunately, but the title track was a very minor hit on the lower reaches of both the U.S. Hot 100 Pop Singles chart and the Album Rock Tracks chart. Absolutely cool you dig Greg Kihn's music, both solo and with GKB. You should check out fellow Bay Area power pop band Earth Quake (whose only success, though very minor if any, came in the mid-late 70's.) They were also a fixture on Greg Kihn's original label Beserkley Records (now defunct.) Earth Quake's albums are super rare and hard to come by, however, I luckily found one of their very rare albums for a buck at a used record store in my neck of the woods last year. But the music is excellent.

I wonder how you deal with disc rot when having so many disc's. Do you or have you digitally backed up your collection as you get disc's? since disc rot is inevitable with all disc's and some get that faster than others. I know humidity and heat is a big factor and can speed up the rot. I'm just curious in your case and your experience with that since you're a huge collector. I enjoy music and you definitely do obviously. I only have hundreds of disc's and have noticed this problem with a few of mine that I've owned less than 20 years, that's why I'm asking. I just subscribed to your channel btw. Thanks for sharing all these great artists with us! 😊👍

Lots of cool stuff here Brendon. Can I ask how much obscure 'Aor'' you find on CD in these smaller shops?! I noticed a few rock/Aor artists like Prism in today's selection shown, and I'm wondering if you see much on CD? A lot of the older Aor ''obscurities'' are like gold dust on CD and I'd probably try and jump through the screen and grab some of the crazy rare Aor titles you might be seeing - but not often showing. Just as an example, while I actually have my own copy, PRISM - See Forever Eyes on cd, and this goes for around $80 on eBay and other places - it only had the one pressing and is an example of the rarer end of Aor obscurities out there....it would be really cool if you show more of this type of rock on cd - IF you are ever coming across them on these sort of visits?

It depends on the record store. Some carry more than others. Each store usually has a main genre it focuses on and then it branches out from from. If the item is rare and hard to find on the internet it’s the same way in the shops. It’s not like you’re going to come across 5 copies of an album that’s $80 online. It’s all about sifting through to find that hidden gem.

What was also "funny" at the Bryan Adams show, is that the minute he and his band got on stage, dark clouds started gathering above the crowd, and within minutes it was pouring heavy rain. As soon as the show was over, the clouds went away and the rain stopped. It was as if that storm had been part of the show...A gentle rain fell during Sting performance, and that was actually kind of nice. Cheers.

Yeah it’s at 96 St. Marks Street. There used to be 3 really good music stores over there but they have all since closed. I’ll film something next time I’m over there and try and work it in somewhere.
