'Tis of a brave young highwayman
This story I will tell
His name was Willie Brennan
And in Ireland he did dwell
It was on the Kilwood Mountain
He commenced his wild career
And many a wealthy nobleman
Before him shook with fear
Chorus:
It was Brennan on the moor
Brennan on the moor
Bold, brave and undaunted
Was young Brennan on the moor
One day upon the highway
As young Willie he went down
He met the mayor of Cashiell
A mile outside of town
The mayor he knew his features
And he said, Young man, said he
Your name is Willie Brennan
You must come along with me
Chorus:
It was Brennan on the moor
Brennan on the moor
Bold, brave and undaunted
Was young Brennan on the moor
Now Brennan's wife had gone to town
Provisions for to buy
And when she saw her Willie
She commenced to weep and cry
Said, Hand to me that tenpenny
As soon as Willie spoke
She handed him a blunderbuss
From underneath her cloak
Chorus:
It was Brennan on the moor
Brennan on the moor
Bold, brave and undaunted
Was young Brennan on the moor
Now with this loaded blunderbuss
The truth I will unfold
He made the mayor to tremble
And he robbed him of his gold
One hundred pounds was offered
For his apprehension there
So he, with horse and saddle
To the mountains did repair
Chorus:
It was Brennan on the moor
Brennan on the moor
Bold, brave and undaunted
Was young Brennan on the moor
Now Brennan being an outlaw
Upon the mountains high
With cavalry and infantry
To take him they did try
He laughed at them with scorn
Until at last 'twas said
By a fa

I grew up in 1950's/60's England and sadly I'd never heard of the Clancys and Tommy until I recently discovered them on youtube. I gather they were based in Ireland and America which is why they were largely unknown in England, mores the pity.

mary jane Prouty -most of us english love Irish music too, and many Irish singers and broadcasters have always been big in england such as Eamonn Andrews, Val Doonican, the Dubliners, Terry Wogan,, Gloria Hunniford, Graham Norton, The Dubliners, The Chieftains,Sinead O'Connor,Father Ted, Michael Flatley etc. Full credit to the english for not letting the IRA put them off their liking of the ordinary Irish people..:)

I have them all, and when I was a young lieutenant, we had to sing in the officer's mess and I sang, "Wild Rover." And "Brennan," And "Old Reilly's Daughter," (something like that) And "Borstal Boy." and since we were activated in Australia, the national anthem, which I do not have to tell you what that was. "Once a jolly swag-man camped beside a billy-bong...) "Waltzing Matilda," for you heathens.

@walshbr533 That's true. Now I'm an American but my favorite music is Irish Folk so I tend to study the songs I hear and one thing has always bothered me about this song. Though it is hard to find, even on the internet, I eventually uncovered the history of Willie Brennan. And the truth is, by a false hearted YOUNG MAN he was truly betrayed. It was a member of his small band that turned him in. I never understood why they changed it to a woman. I still love the song, though.

When I took my grandson to camp a couple years ago, we met a boy named Brennan. I remarked to his mother, "Ah, like 'Brennan on the Moor'" and her eyes glazed over like many young folk. Another thought is what was Willy Brennan doing with a false hearted woman, when he had a faithful, supportive wife with a blunderbuss under her cloak? Let that be a lesson to ye young Irish rebels!
@Rikki0
@Rikki0 4 жыл бұрын
I've never understood why they included that line in the song. It should have been, "by a false hearted young man he was truly betrayed". At the time he had formed a small gang of three. It was one of the two men who actually betrayed him to the constabulary for the reward.
