I don't think a lot of reporters get it. Surprised how McMurphy misses this. New markets in the future(big picture) is about Brands not about Geography. Who cares if the SEC is in SC if the national audiences are watching Clemson and not S C.

@tarheel7406 don't believe in a Super League, maybe a Super Division. I think 64, B1G (24), SEC (20), B12 (20). B12 a distant 3rd but still makes Super Division. Just my thoughts.

@@CaydensDaddio No. This realignment is about contraction via consolidation. The SEC & B1G may pause at ~20 each for a tiered P4, but most likely they go to ~24 each for a P2 and then everyone else can do whatever. There is no feasible path for a peer P3. The BIG12 dies more each time the PAC and ACC deplete out.

That is my thought. The SEC isn't going to say they are interested in schools in other leagues. But if Florida State and Clemson got out of the ACC, I don't think the SEC would want the B1G to get them instead.

Let me get this straight, the SEC has two teams in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, yet they’re saying they already have a team in Florida and in South Carolina, so they need to add any teams there? This makes no sense whatsoever! Florida is the third largest state in the country, and produces the most NFL players, yet the SEC says they don’t need two teams in that state. FSU has been in the top 12 of the most viewed teams Nationally since the early 1980’s. Viewership equals money! What part of that don’t you understand? Clemson has won or played for several national championships over the past 6-8 years, but again the SEC doesn’t think they need them?

After first discounting, I now believe FSU's amateur tactics played a role in the CFP snub. "Besides I think you're just jealous because of the impotency of the UNC alumni and AD." So dumb..., I have been critical of FSU's tactics long before the current political interference in NC. "you can be grateful for the FSU tactics." So dumb... If anything, FSU tactics have made an amicable settlement harder. From the UNC perspective, a possible windfall would be pushing UNC away from FSU and towards the SEC.

Ignorant take. Why would the SEC want Texas, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Miss State, Auburn and Alabama based on the purported duplication of markets? The real answer is Sankey and the B1G commisioner cannot discuss as long as FSU, Clemson and UNC are in the ACC. The reporting on Texas, Oklahoma, USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington leaving was correct.

As an LSU fan, I wouldn't mind having FSU and Clemson in the SEC. They both would help strengthen the football brand of the conference. If I were Greg Sankey, I would take them for football and North Carolina, and I guess NC State or Duke for basketball. Besides, let's be honest. ESPN will not let FSU and Clemson slip through their fingers and end up going to the Big Ten to play on Fox.

@@richardbrookins5406 Networks don't own part of conferences. They own conference networks, but those are changeable over time. The BIG12 is the worst P4 (by far) without any reasonable doubt and across all major factors. All of the buzz over to which P2 ACC members will go vs. the relative silence re: the BIG12 proves this. When considered, all of the new BIG12 schools have failed to make the Tier 1 cut thus far.

75 scholarships / 10 walkons? See? That’s B12 thinking. This thinking is exactly why Texas and Oklahoma are gone. The B12 schools can’t pay so they want small rosters. Otherwise, the B12 can’t compete. Texas had no problem advocating 85/125 rosters today with SEC schools. Hell, Elko made an emotional plea for large walkon rosters. Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, all the SEC coaches are pulling for 85/125 today. The B12? If Texas proposed 85/125 in the B12, Texas would have been accused of “bullying”, lol. The B12 can do B12. The SEC will do SEC.

As much as it hurts to see teams leaving conferences, Seeing the BIG symbol of the jerseys and fields of USC. UcLA, Washington and Oregon is just going to raise the level of the P2, along with Texas and Oklahoma being in the SEC!!! Its just going to be great for college football!!! Cant wait to get to football

The SEC already has the Florida and South Carolina cable market. If any team should be of interest to the SEC, North Carolina and Virginia would be better choices. Plus both NC and VA are AAU universities, big plus to faculty.

I believe that FSU will be in the SEC. There isn’t a great financial argument for any other conference that isn’t short sighted . While the money in a TV contract may be close between the Big 10 and the SEC, the money is in the attendance and money into the local economy . The same things that hurt the ACC would be the issue with the Big 10. Those schools may travel because it’s the first time in Tallahassee. After the novelty wears off, you have an awful home schedule for FSU. With the SEC , all of that goes away. The SEC is the right fit culturally , geographically and financially for the greater FSU community.

LOL... FSU will likely never be respected in the B1G. It will be seen (and treated) as a Forrest Gump with a good address that can run fast. FSU was a football tentpole in the ACC with far more influence than it will have in the B1G.

@@litedawg I still defend FSU regarding the CFP snub, but that bowl showing really evidences a lack of character in the football/athletic program on top of how bad the institution has acted during all of this. FSU could have at least tried to win and allow its unofficial defenders make arguments for a true national champion.

North Carolina and Virginia should go to the SEC I mean there rivalry is called the South’s oldest rivalry. North Carolina also has a rivalry with South Carolina it makes the sec a more well rounded conference with football and basketball powers and it completes there acquiring of all the southern states.

The Big 10 is very very interested in academics and is actively pushing Nebraska to make improvements in that venue! In general FSU and Clemson possess mediocre academics at best and as such the Big Presidents will not be rushing to include FSU or Clemson ! Now UNC , Ga Tech , UVa are all excellent / superb academic institutions and Duke is certainly a big basketball draw , the supreme academic football playing school save Stanford ., so they may find them as attractive . Clemson and FSU wouid be more consistent academically with Miss, Miss State, Ark, Tenn etc Not .. Michigan , Northwestern, Iowa, Rutgers , Penn State , etc

The Big ten picked superior football programs over academics in that case and it should give you a hint at how they will proceed moving foward.

The SEC is interested in Clemson and FSU. They just can't say it until both are free and clear of their current legal battles with the ACC. And just because the SEC is interested doesn't mean that's where they'll go. The B10 is also in the mix.

When you speak about already occupying South Carolina and Florida markets, youre referring to the linear television model which is quickly dying. Streaming is the future and it doesn’t matter where your eyeballs come from. The SEC is most certainly interested in FSU and Clemson from the sheer eyeballs that they will bring to each game. And if you think they are okay with them both going to the B1G, you’re delusional.

Miami a bigger market than both fsu and Clemson rather take Clemson and Miami have the interest state of South Carolina and the most populated market as for as tv in florida north central to South Florida. North Florida has chicken farm towns and little pig villages.

@@jmath1978 USC/UCLA left the freakin' PAC. UNC fans/boosters strongly favor the SEC if/when. UNC must get peer revenue to maintain its high number of competitive sports and ambitions. As things stand, UNC will move to one of the P2s absent a political barrier.

Being better is not a value like worth. South Carolina eagerly joined SEC and is established making them more"valuable". Swap Tigers and Cocks doesnt add a sizable value because of the region and Tv. Carolina makes more revenue each year over any ACC schools

It's probably going to take the next 15 to 20 years to battle it out in court, but that doesn't mean the valuable schools aren't leaving the ACC or their conference will even exist by then.

The Utah story never made sense to me. Would they prefer a different conference, sure. But is the ACC in a position to expand when 1/2 their members are preparing to bolt? And Utah is going to a conference that will make less money? Now, if the Big 10 calls, their out the door.

Well, tortious interference is a motive. Also, Barry Switzer famously added players to his roster who he had no intention of playing but wanted to weaken his competition. So if the Big Ten finds them beneficial expect the SEC to go after them.

I can see Big10 taking FSU and Clemson, with Fox ok'ing in order to continue to become national conference and get foothold into Southeast...plus they add those two and they are on par from a top team standpoint with SEC. SEC takes NC and Virginia to help on the basketball and academic side, while gaining a few mediocre teams for the good football teams to beat up on...SEC has enough top teams and really don't need to add 2 more top programs....Big10 can beef up their league a ton with those two and ND

The Venables slander on this show is insane. 3 consecutive top 10 recruiting classes as well as 3 consecutive top 20 portal classes. He won 10 games in his second season as a HC and Sark did it for the first time, in his much longer coaching career, last season in the same conference BV is coaching in. Because for some reason Texas gets a pass for coming from the Big12 and OU doesn't. OU beat Texas last season and was a couple of bad plays from playing Texas again in the Big12 championship. OU was in a FAR worse state when BV took over, thanks to how Riley departed, compared to Texas when Sark got there. Not sure what else the guy has to do to get some respect.

If each of the 16 SEC schools are going to annually receive $100 million in revenue sharing, then if the league expands to 18, the two new teams must bring in a combined $200 million in new revenue, or else the other 16 teams lose financially in this deal. Florida State and Clemson have a lot of fans, but not $200 million worth of new fan revenue. They cannibalize a lot of existing media markets. On the other hand, North Carolina brings in four new top 50 media markets (Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Greenville-Asheville, and Greensboro-High Point, Winston-Salem). Virginia brings in the huge DC market as well as Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News, and Richmond-Petersburg. These two schools can add $200 million in new media market-generating revenue.

Thank you! You explained it perfectly few people on this site understand what expansion is about. You don't just add schools for the sake of it they have to bring a market you're not already in. Having redundant markets doesn't do that.

@@cdray-qy7wp a) UNC can't be responsible for political fights outside of the institution. b) I suspect that the SEC would take NCSTATE to secure UNC, but efforts are ongoing to prevent that necessity. Be careful, I can see FSU having to wait things out in he BIG12. My odds of FSU landing in the BIG12 keep increasing. UNC is the prize, not FSU.

The B1G didn't want W/O, at least not when they ultimately were invited. That expansion was premature relative to when they were planned to be more seriously considered.

@@Bradstonepro The B1G didn't anticipate PAC incompetence and had considered UNC secured when/if. As it turned out so far, PAC incompetence caused a near complete scatter and UNC swung heavily towards the SEC. If anything, these events plus others have made CLEMSON/FSU more disposable from the SEC's perspective. Again as things stand, I maintain that FSU has next to no chance of an SEC invite but that the SEC has agreed to take CLEMSON to seal the deal with UNC.

The SEC is split when is comes down to both FSU and Clemson. They both are really good programs but the SEC is already in both states. There are other attractive programs that are in states we are currently not in (but are also not completely across the country) like North Carolina and Virginia. That’s who I think the SEC would be the most interested in.

And those two schools will maybe bring a total between the 2 of them of 1 million viewers for their games...if espn prefers that over 10-12 million Clemson/FSU brings, then they deserve to go bankrupt like they are...this is about the future, which is streaming, and attracting folks to pay to watch programs....not regions like in the past. Thats where ACC screwed up with BC/Syracuse - huge markets that dont care about CFB.... Big10 by being aggressive with the last couple big brands is outsmarting the SEC right now...If Big10 adds Clemson/FSU and probably ND down the road and SEC takes UNC/Virginia (with ESPN having to pay another $160M for those two who will get the ratings on par with Vandy) its game over...A true National League vs Southern regional

They are best two media properties to be in play from this point forward (other than Notre Dame) probably for the next 50 years. ... Unless schools were to move between SEC & Big10.... There is NO Way SEC and ESPN are not interested in getting those 2 prime properties their house. There just is no way they have no interest. The expressed basis for McMurphy's opinion is seriously flawed.

History and current credible reporting say that UVA/UNC are the crown jewels, not CLEMSON & FSU. As far as I can tell, neither were even considered for the B1G's expansion with UMD/RUT. am i missing something with Florida State??. After Jameis Winston left 1 full year(2014 I think) after winning the Natty. FSU was playing in a empty stadium for 7 or so years. I remember the guy sitting in the stands by himself reading a book. Here comes last year and All of a sudden they had a great year. And they are a Brand thats on everyones must have list? You telling me that they cant sell seats in the stadium BUT all of the fans are tuning in at home to watch the Nols which were a undisciplined free for all hot mess at the time....OK.. I guess.. Sorry I couldn't word it better but I think everyone knows what I am trying to say... How far off base am I on this?

That was when Jumbo was looking and that great Stan Wilcox did the first DEI hire on his way out with Slick Willie taking Jumbo's place. I still watched them from home even though they sucked during that time. Did not take long and Slick Willie was gone and the rise started. And that now was 5 years ago so yes, you are off base.

Even when they were down they brought in TV ratings..and thats who is writing the checks...when they are good they are top 5-10 Tv....BTW their stadium was far from empty...check the facts not a GIF... But look at any team during their down years - attendance plummets...see Gators, USC, etc...

FSU is far from major cities and airports compared to other schools. So filling stadium seats is a little more difficult. But their viewership is excellent. They have more viewership than Clemson, even in the bad years.

I'm in the Big 10 (Ohio State). FSU believes that the Big 10 will fight ESPN (Big 10 does not have ESPN) because FSU has run out of money. No we aren't. The Big 10 has just added USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington. We're good.

SEC has no reason to add Clemson/FSU. They don't need the brands, the markets or the recruiting soil. They can sit back and see what happens then offer a few ACC schools at reduced pay outs. Avoid the blame for tearing it down and come out ahead financially. B1G has a desire for the brand, markets and recruiting soil with the biggest caveat of forcing ND to join. So that makes the most sense. Clemson, FSU to B1G. SEC/ESPN comes out ahead if they can kill off the ACC deal but not if they merely pay more for brands they already own. So again, financially it makes a ton of sense for B1G to make first move and pick off biggest brands, SEC to respond with offer at reduced rates to next most appealing schools, then a tip of ESPN cap to 3rd tier schools letting them know they should jump to Big 12 because reduced rate ACC deal will be significantly less. That total attrition would force ACC to accept far less for the remaining 10 or so schools.
