Nice to see a demo of steaming milk on this machine. This machine is slower than the big ones and it 's helpful to see you follow the process all the way through and let us hear how much air you're mixing in at the beginning.

What I most appreciated with this clip, the latte art is done on the side of the viewer and not the opposite side. It is easier to duplicate the procedure. Thanks !

Don't forget we are aiming for Latte Art here... what is most important to the home user making a latte for him / her is what we are discussing. I find that if you steam your milk first you run into the issue of milk separating and loosing your micro-foam. The crema does not go away and a quick stir will bring it right back for contrast for your latte. I agree that the less time your espresso sits, the better for your drink, but we are not discussing cafe etiquette here, but a breville machine.

Thanks for posting this video. I am a proud owner of this BES 870XL. It has worked flawlessly up until recently. Here is what's going on. I have found that setting the coarseness of my grind at the number 5 setting, my espressos have been coming out perfectly. Pulling the shots has been taking from between 25 seconds and 30 seconds with the pressure between 8.5 and 9.5 bars or well within the grey area. In fact I usually can keep the needle nearly dead center of the grey area the way I have everything set. Lately however, my shots have been barely coming out of the portafilter with the pressure shooting to about the second grey line outside the solid grey area on the pressure gauge. Naturally I decided to set the grind to a coarser setting and have gone all the way up to the number 9 setting with little or no noticeable difference. I then decided to do a lighter tamp which did help somewhat but only with the grind set at number 9. I then pulled the shower head out and made sure it was clean on the top and bottom sides. By the way, I am using filtered water, I regularly perform the back-flush procedure as needed as per the instructions, I replace the water filter every 2 months as per the instructions and I descale with white vinegar once per month as per the instructions. I am at a loss here. I understand ambient temperature and barometric pressure can make it necessary to adjust the grind but this all seems to have happened overnight. One would also expect that if this is weather related that the need to change the settings would fluctuate but I have had the grind set at number 9 now for a full week while doing a lighter tamp than I have been in the past. I have not changed the beans I am using either. By the way, I have just performed an advanced cleaning of the grind burs, grind fan and chute. That hasn't helped either. Could it be that for some reason my grinder just suddenly started to grind finer on it's own? Can anyone tell me what's going on here? Is this normal?

Have you taken off the acorn retainer nut on top of the grinder? Make sure you have the correct washers underneath it and that it's fully tightened down - no vertical play.

Yes, they came out with the 870 version. The one in the video is the 860. Slight difference in the hopper, and have programmable temperature. I would definitley reccomend this for your home... use fresh coffee, enough coffee, the right grind and you have really nice espresso. I am also a big fan of the steam wand, it allows you to pull in milk like a pro. We have the new 870 version available.

It is super fast to froth. This machine made our espresso and steamed the milk in half the time as our precious, beloved, Starbucks barista. We are loving this machine! I got on here to see if the pump noise was the same as ours when the milk is being frothed. I hear the same noise.

Wondering if I should steam the milk first and then brew as this is not dual boiler? By that way you do not have to wait for the temperature to rise to steam the milk and your espresso wouldn't lose the aroma because of sitting too long?
@ihavetentoes
@ihavetentoes 11 жыл бұрын
Yes. Steaming the milk should be quick enough that your espresso's crema doesn't lose it's texture in the meantime... but if you steam the milk first try to have the espresso grinding already so you can quickly prepare your espresso while the milk still looks nice and shiny.

@espressoplanet
@espressoplanet 11 жыл бұрын
The grind setting will depend on how fresh your coffee is, how much you use, etc. There is no definitive answer. The answer, actually, lies in timing your extraction. Aim for 60ml in 25 seconds. If it takes 30+ seconds, grind coarser. If it takes 20- seconds, grind finer. You can go to our website espressoplanet to learn more and find pricing.

So I’ve had this for 3 years and can never seem to figure out 1) micro foam, and 2) consistent thick crema. What are the top tips you have for that? Aka - fresh coffee grinds? ( we use lavazava’s espresso grinds from Italy/Costco, lol, but have also tried the local espresso freshly roasted ones) For milk, usually used vitamin D, organic whole milk … and have also done with oat milk, extra creamy…

After frothing the milk you should let out some steam then wipe so the milk doesn't get hard and stuck in the future it will cause clogging for future foaming your milk.

I own one of these and was convinced the steam wand just wasn’t enough for creating latte art, this video is now direct confirmation that I’m just doing it wrong. What could I possibly be doing wrong? I use whole milk and the pitcher it comes with, I get it rolling and still always end up with just hot milk instead of a nice microfoam, never mind latte art. Super frustrating.
@raduf8
@raduf8 5 жыл бұрын
Andrew Moody try to lower the pitcher; the tip of the steam wand should be just above the milk. After it gets foamy and somewhat warm, dive the wand deeper and hold it till it gets too hot to keepp your hand on the pitcher. Also, an unintended trick that worked for me was switching the wand direction on the other side of the pitcher. Somehow, the position made it easier to get better milk texture. Hope it will work for you.

Hello Espresso Planet. I bought my Breville barista express. Using local beans. Can’t properly grind my beans. Where’s the best starting point? And can’t seem to dial the dosing with the timer. Please help.
@espressoplanet
@espressoplanet 6 жыл бұрын
We suggest adjusting your grind size and dosage, as these are better indicators of a consistently good shot than grinder dosage time. If possible, try switching to dialing in using a weighted method (using your portafilter on a scale) if the grinding time does not change with the aforementioned suggestions. All of that being said, dialing in will change from bean to bean and bag to bag, so a slight change in dialing in variables will likely occur when you switch beans or get a new roast date. Visit our website for more tips!

As many have said, it's going to be different based on beans, age etc. However, I had the same questions initially, so I understand your position. To be perfectly honest, I practiced on about a pound and a half to try and get the the pressure gauge up and eventually determined the machine must be defective and it was. Anyway, try a grind setting of 3 and about 4 - 5 o'clock for the grind amount. That's working well for me on various beans I've used. The best improvement I saw was after getting beans that were roasted the day I bought them. I knew it would be better, but I did not expect it to be as obvious as it was. :) Hope this helps you.

I had the DeLonghi EC 155 ($100) and upgraded to this machine. I can't tell any difference in taste between the two but I prefer this machine because it doesn't take time to warm up, the grinder is built in, and it's so much easier to clean. Calis krit I buy beans from local San Francisco coffee shops like Blue Bottle and Philz coffee so my espresso tastes just like theirs! I rarely go to Starbucks now but I still go to coffee shops occasionally because I appreciate latte art so much more after trying to do it myself and failing. Sometimes, I'll spend $4 on lattes that don't taste as good as the ones I make at home and it makes me upset.

The machine is very very capable. The taste is better than starbucks, basically because you are taking care of your own coffe, but it's not granted because the machine is quite difficult to use and requires technique and practice. I think it is worth every dollar.

try lavassa super crema, go at a rate where the espresso is flowing slowly but not slow to the point where its dripping. make sure that it is 18 grams of coffee. for the milk use whole milk and put the steam wand at a 15 degree angle and the tip half an inch into the milk, it should make a screeching sound and get a soft consistant screeching sound, stop until it nearly doubles in size tap it and swirl it around it should be like wet paint. break the crema in the espresso by swirling it and tilt the cup where its nearly spilling out then pour the milk really high and go in super close and begin the latte art. I reccomend practicing pouring techniques with water in the milk pitcher and try looking for local barista classes.

@claireletricia5027
@claireletricia5027 4 жыл бұрын
chris sanvo perhaps I go beyond just making a good coffee? I strive to achieve the overall package of not only it looks good but also taste good. This is a vital role of being a barista. Mind you this channel focus is latte art. So your point is invaild Sure your product aim is making good consistence coffee at home provided they practice the steps like having the right grind/ dosage and extraction or even making sure their coffee machine is always clean. I’m pretty confident that if your coffee machine can make good “latte art milk “ it be able to make a decent latte art. Judging by your comments you don’t seem to be confident on the versatility of your product. Simply brushing people off as not normal or just stupid it’s just pure ignorance
@jkeith3134
@jkeith3134 4 жыл бұрын
Claire Ng if you said that this channel’s focus is latte art, not the other aspects of a latte, why are you critiquing the coffee preparation? I also find your statement that the latte art is subpar to be without merit, as I’m sure a customer would be satisfied and even impressed by this art. A Rosetta is not the simplest latte art design

You're right if you mean the Starbucks FW. A FW traditionally is a 5.5oz tulip cup with a double shot of espresso and around 3.5-4oz of velvety steamed whole milk which has been aerated for only 1 second to reduce froth and thus deeming it a flat white. Latte art is pretty typically done on a flat white. On a starbucks fw shots vary depending on size. It goes 2/2/3/3 S/T/G/V. It is a ristretto pull, meaning a faster extraction time and a less bitter shot. A ristretto shot is .75 fl oz and a regular espresso shot is 1oz. You still use whole milk and aerate it for only a second vs 2-3 for a latte. I suppose the closest version of a EU flat white at starbucks would be a short with room.
