Congrats on a great first brew day! The rubber stopper on the overflow pipe should be taken out when the grain is in. I push it down a bit too to just over the second screen so the wort can flow back and not boil dry if you get a stuck mash.

Thanks, Andy! That's a very useful tip I was completely unaware of. On my third batch, I will incorporate it. I wish you'd posted this about four hours earlier as I started my second batch yesterday morning and repeated leaving the stopper attached. :D This batch was bottled on Saturday and I must say, it's shaping up well. Finger crossed!
