You always speak of it as simply a sectarian conflict. It is a colonial problem. The native Irish were stripped of their rights, their land by planters sent to Ireland by the English government. In 1918 the majority of people in Ireland voted for a 32 county Republic. The descendents of the colonial planters in the 6 counties refused to accept the democratic will of the Irish people. The British Government bowed to this minority and so followed Irish partition. I want a 32 county Irish Republic but its not worth shedding one drop of blood for.

This piece is superficial and tells little about the conflict's context. It includes people who are ethnically Irish, supporters of the Republic of Ireland and who are likely Catholic, vs people who are ethnically British and support the UK, Protestants. The conflict is rarely about religious beliefs but is rooted in events including the "Troubles" starting in the 1970s, English colonialization before that, the 1999 Good Friday Agreement, with Brexit as a match sparking those previous fuels. See European news for some facts.

It's not so much brexit but the Tory government refusing to implement the protocol and stick by the conditions they agreed to when leaving the EU. Fact is only a very small minority are involved in violence etc and most people happily go about their daily lives. Also there are not two ‘sides’; there are many different shades of opinion, a growing middle ground and a lot of people who don’t even care about politics. It's not quite as simple as it's been presented here. Belfast is Belfast - you can go to plenty of other places in the North where, bar low-level disputes and tensions, Catholics and Protestants get along very well for the most part. Most of the North voted to reject Brexit, after all - including a great many protestants. The DUP are claiming otherwise, because the DUP would Love the legitimacy of speaking for all protestants - but they don't. I'm sorry, but this clip just fails to accurately sum up the situation in the North.

I think Paganism needs to return if you ask me because Christianity has caused way more harm than good. I'm more Pro-Ireland than Irish Catholics because I'm agnostic Celtic/Nordic Pagan. The Catholic v Protestant thing in Northern Ireland is not actually about religion, it is about identity. Catholics identify as Irish and nationalist while Protestants identify as British and unionist (the union of the United Kingdom). The Catholics are the descendants of the native population, while the Protestants are the descendants of colonisers, mainly from Scotland, but also England. Catholics generally want a united Ireland, while Protestants generally want to maintain partition and Northern Ireland's place within the United Kingdom.

Ireland is a island that should not have another country running a portion of it. Colonialism is dead. Time for the Unionists to abide by the Good Friday Agreement. Irish Unity would improve life in Ireland for all, no matter your religion or heritage. Seems like England wants the sectarian fighting to start all over again, rather than working something out to avoid that tragic rabbit hole...The vast majority of all of us do not want that to ever happen again. Enough is enough.

What the report misses is the growth of support for more moderate political parties including the non-sectarian Alliance party that is almost level with the hardline protestant party the DUP. The protestants are mostly descendants of British colonizers (back in the 1600s and later, the Great Plantation), the catholics aremostly descendants of indigenous Irish people. Northern Ireland could be considered occupied territory which the catholic republicans probably still do. They want the occupying force out of the country or at least reunification of Ireland. Religion is just because the occupyiers happen to be of a different branch of christianity.

Uhhhh, I’m a Protestant from Alabama, and we don’t, and anyone I know, celebrate breaking away from the Catholic Church by having a big parade. We just go to church every Sunday and never talk about how other Christian denominations are wrong. If someone says there Catholic, I’m like okay that’s neat, and just keep having a good time. Like really, why is there so much hate between Christian denominations in certain areas. Just get along, Catholics and Protestants share so many things alike, Yet some on both sides like to hate the other side for the smallest of reasons.

The problem in NI is not really about religion, it is about identity. Religion is the first identity marker: Catholics = Irish nationalist = seeks a United Ireland, Protestant = British Unionist = seeks maintenance of partition and the union with Britain. The peace process there was deliciously ambiguous leaving both sides feeling like winners. Brexit destroys that ambiguity.

There will be no re-ignition of conflict. At the hint that it gets serious and/or the Northern Ireland Protocol fails, the EU and US would drag the UK to respect the last working arrangement of the Good Friday Agreement than to allow violence or a border on Ireland. That working arrangement would be the entirety of the UK inside EU Single Market. With threat (and follow through) of sanctions, as in Suez. After all the EU and US have stated the Northern Ireland Protocol is crucial to the Good Friday Agreement. If that doesn't work out the natural path forward is to return to what works before renegotiating further. Refusal to do so would show the EU and US the UK is not willing to uphold the Good Friday Agreement, and thereby warranting sanctions. The average layman American doesn't care much about Ireland, but that's not true for the politicians, who are rather partial to the huge Irish American caucus.

Not going to happen. Ireland has in less than 50 years of EU membership become an open tolerant and prosperous country. In contrast, the centuries of English rule resulted in poverty and famine. The Irish wish the English well in their desire for splendid isolation but have no wish to rejoin the UK at the moment the Scots are trying to break free. One of Ireland’s first leaders De Valera tried splendid isolation that which Sinn Fein , translation ourselves alone, the stand for that and we saw how that turned out so miserably in the 1930-1950s.
