BRITAIN faces a Brexit moment of truth today - with a year-long delay on the cards if MPs don't agree to get Britain out of the EU as soon as possible.
The House of Commons will tonight vote on the way forward for Brexit - with MPs likely to endorse a much softer form of EU exit than Theresa May wants.
The House of Commons will hold a second round of "indicative votes" from 8pm tonight after Mrs May's deal was defeated for the third time last week.
They will cast votes on three or four different options - likely to include the customs union, single market, a second referendum and cancelling Brexit altogether...

@TheMoonRover
@TheMoonRover 5 жыл бұрын
The difference there is that the vice president of the Senate is presumably a senior figure in his or her party. The speaker of the House of Commons is not. Although John Bercow was technically elected on the Conservative party manifesto, as speaker he must remain neutral and plays no role in party politics. He's not even included in the totals when MPs are listed by party.

It has always been a precedent that in the event of a tie on a policy change, the speaker of the House of Commons votes in favour of maintaining the status quo as **no majority exists to support a change** - in this case, voting 'Aye' would change it, and 'No' would maintain it. In the event that it is a debated issue that is not finalised and where the status quo would not be changed if it passes, then the speaker's precedent is to vote to ensure that the debate may continue, and naturally they would vote "Aye." This event has only occurred 49 times (not incl. this one). in over 200 years, so honestly, it really isn't as bad as you'd make it out to be. **(The chair is, of course, entitled to vote as they so choose, but voting specifically in favour of a change would be a greater travesty to the neturality of the chair than upholding precedent.)**

I don't understand your question, but I think I get the jist. The reason why the vote has been repeated a number of times is to allow MPs to come to the conclusion that only one ore two options are possible to win and therefore the margins have become closer each time. As for your comment about the people speaking. These people are who we have voted in and are representing us, they are our voice

Is it possible to TRANSFER UK sovereignty to the PEOPLE? Sovereign parliament of 650individuals have failed to represent the choice of 65million people. These people have not done a days work in 3years and i am sure they wish to continue to be paid for nothing for a further 2years. The social Contract between Parliament and People has been broken. If Parliament is no longer representative of the Majority and caters to a minority Elite! Allowing Mps to serve out an entire term even when they have failed to deliver on their campaign manifestos is not acceptable as a consequence the main lessons i take from this are as such: - Review of who is entitled to hold Sovereignty in the UK is needed. - Review of the MP recall process and more powers to the electorate to hold MPs to account is needed.

What the speaker said is true. But important decision also need times, and this vote was the closest thing we have to a solution for brexit with a majority. The Statu Quo is a no deal, and it's one of the less popular choice for the MP.

Yes, it's precisely the best time. It isn't a case of trivia, it's important for the precedent to be openly acknowledged, recorded in Hansard and entered into public record. The person asking the question was fully aware of the answer, but he knew that many of the electorate would not.

so if i understood what bercow said correctly, on this particular type of changing vote he doesn't believe as the speaker of the house that he has the right to "be the deciding vote" so to speak and must remain impartial in his choosing of which side he casts his vote for, is that what he's saying?
@chiuri21
@chiuri21 5 жыл бұрын
Kind of, as in he theoretically has the right to cast a vote according to his personal beliefs but feels as if doing so would compromise the neutrality of his position, and thus has chosen to act according to the precedent set by previous speakers who have found themselves in similar situations (which is to maintain the current state of things rather than change them).
@Dozeji
@Dozeji 5 жыл бұрын
Usually, the Speaker is impartial, and has to resign from whatever Party he's been serving under at the time of nomination as a Speaker (In the case of John Bercow, the Conservative representative of Buckingham). However, if the vote goes into a tie, then the Speaker has the power to cast a deciding vote in favour of "noes" or "ayes". That's the only instance of Speaker actually being able to change the course of the debate. If I understood your comment correctly, that is.
