The Key comment in this whole interview is at 11:35 when Burke says "any jury in CANADA". Sorry Burke, but in the US, under US law, where the majority of the teams operate, the NHL Loses the same argument. In the US the teams can (A) not operate the season and not pay anyone, (B) play the season and play the players under the contract, or (C) go into US Bankruptcy Court which is the ONLY body in the US which can nullify a legally binding labor contract. And yes for you legal beagles the US National Labor Relations Board exists, but cannot nullify the contract.

If they don't play a season and the NFL and NBA are playing good luck getting a tv deal for any kind of real money and the players won't be getting anywhere near the money they make now. NFL and NBA don’t have to deal with Canada’s BS. NHL had to host their SC playoffs in Canada because blackface Trudeau doesn’t want minorities into his country for “safety reasons”. The owners need to offer something more than just "F*ck you, pay me." It's not the players fault the owners negotiated a bad deal for themselves. A deal is a deal. If the players are content with a flat cap for six years they have a signed deal in hand. If the owners are in such dire need of holding on to their up front money they can start by offering points on the split or a percentage of the expansion fee for Seattle. The onus is on the owners to offer something to entice the players to change already agreed upon terms.
@shawnerickstad129

Like Burke said things changed the last four months since agreed to contract and I agree with him 100%. The owners snd players split profits 50/50 and if no profits and losing money what’s 50% of that for players? Two points. One, though I agree that representing your country is a fantastic opportunity that can positively affect players, the NHL is a bigger, tougher, faster league than anything Alexis Lafreniere has ever played in and he needs to get up to games speed ASAP. He has already captained and won a World Juniors. If the NHL is not playing, let him play Juniors, but if they are, he needs to be in the Rangers camp. Period. Two, Burke is right on the money as far as the 50/50 thing goes. Here is the biggest difference between the players and the owners position if they play this year. The players will make money and the owners will lose money. No matter what, the owners are going to lose money. Therefore, if there is no season, it is all on the players. Based on that alone, I think the players will make the right decision.
@vorenas
@vorenas 3 жыл бұрын
Not returning to play will set the League as a whole back, hell I am not convinced it has even bounced backed from the last lockout shortened season, let alone the covid shortened season we just had. There is a reason why MLB, NBA, NFL and International Football superstars make the money they do and the NHL's best make what they make. The sport needs to continue to grow and a year without play will put hockey out of mind for a lot of the struggling markets. It comes down to a very simple situation here, play for less money that you may never get back (players) or lose roughly 60 Million dollars instead of 15 Million to sit the year out and then hope you can string together something that will see a return to revenue (team owners). Both choices do not work for the simplest of reasons that no one seems to want to talk about. If the owners choose not to play, I would venture that 5 to 10 teams just pack it in and fold or look to sell to buyers who are not interested but may buy on the cheap, as for the players on those teams, are you good enough to get a new job as an NHL player on a remaining team that is hit with a flat cap for a significant amount of time and could see the salary cap go lower because of the loss in available games as far as tv deals are concerned. If the other leagues return to play and the NHL doesn't it really could be the nail in the coffin that leads the way to tv deals for hockey fans to watch all the other pro hockey leagues around the world on tv instead and in all likely hood it will be just as exciting.

Like him or not, Mr Burke is correct here. If the NHL can't have fans, they can't make much money, and they don't make enough money from the TV deals to play the players what they want. The NHL owners stand to lose a ton of money here, and I don't blame them if they decide to not play unless the players finally figure out that this pandemic won't allow the league to bring in normal revenues. This is an unprecedented situation, and calls for unprecedented solutions. They are better off playing a shortened 48-game season even if it's just on TV, and take the salary hits, accordingly, in order to give the league's future players a legit shot at making some money years from now. The NHL and NHLPA are 50/50 partners, which means they have to assume the risks and losses EQUALLY. End of story.

Syd showing real inability to understand basic logic... Players demand 50% of revenue to maximize their greed (no expenses, no risk). Then when there is no profit and far less revenue they demand essentially 100% of revenue and to force their partner to lose money. What business could do this? If you invented Tesla and go thru all the risk and investments and problems to make a company... how could it be logical to then hire a new factory worker and accept his demand that he get all of the company sales?
