This is why I love living in the UK. The news and culture bases it's knowledge of the world on scientific discoveries! I never have to flick on the TV and have to watch Bill O'Reilly call the Higgs Boson a "God particle" and have to listened to a biased news source that tells me the world is 6000 years old.

I think that the most important point Brian made was at 2:44, "Finding out fundamental things about the universe has been (in the past) the road to Civilization". Indeed, discoveries like electricity, quantum theory, have lead to technologies that have enriched all our lives. It is interesting to contrast this with religion, where its answer to anything unknown is essentially "God did it". This answer achieves nothing. Learning and discoveries stop with answers like that. Given this, it is clear that religion is a barrier to improving our lives, and civilization.

***** So? Are you saying because it hasn't been found in a time frame that you have just made up, then there is something wrong? No that is garbage. Solutions and discoveries to unknown things will take as long as is required. Arbitrarily making up a time frame to which a discovery has to be made in, is utterly meaningless. It doesn't take into account the work involved, the resources available and costs, the technology required in order to test out hypotheses which may also need to be invented, the life span of the people involved, the education level in which people need in order to even partake in progress and the time required to reach that level of education, etc.
@RandomYoutuber1

***** Yes you did specify a time frame. You said "So, where exactly is this unified quantum theory of gravity?? Oh, yes, thats right, we dont have one.". In particular, "we don't have one" specifies a time frame with an end boundary of the present. Do you see it now! If that isn't what you meant, then what was the purpose of the question, because you would just be stating a fact that something isn't known at this point in time. Yes, we don't have a unified theory of gravity. It could well be found in the future. I'm not sure what your point is.

It absolutely is! Look to Denmark. We've accepted the desire to be independent from both Greenland and the Faeroe Islands. We still retain strong connections, and remain each other's closest partners, infact Denmark still gives large subsidiaries to these nations, because it is our responsibility, as a former colonial 'owner' to help them stand on their own. It's all about mutual respect. The logistics behind it are just minor hurdles.

The first form of elemental phosphorus to be produced (white phosphorus, in 1669) emits a faint glow upon exposure to oxygen - hence its name given from Greek mythology, Φωσφόρος meaning "light-bearer" (Latin Lucifer), referring to the "Morning Star", the planet Venus. The term "phosphorescence", meaning glow after illumination, originally derives from this property of phosphorus, although this word has since been used for a different physical process that produces a glow....

Exporting folks like Piers Morgan probably helps the airwaves immensely as well. I suppose I shouldn't grumble that much, we did get Hithcens, and Dawkins seems to have as much likelihood of turning up on a US campus these days as he does Oxford. But as I think about it, we are still stuck with Simon Cowell. Perhaps we should send you Bill O to balance the ledger.

Engineering Student Time travel not so much, but spawning things and teleportation I can see... with it being the mass generating particle if we can just create a computer strong enough to take a picture of the exact order/position of all particles in say a rats body. and then create the exact same particles at a different location, maybe that would open teleportation / cloning up.

Does the Hadron Collider get its mass from the Higs Particles..So how do they know they have found new ones if they're everywhere in the first place
@Lunarfacia
@Lunarfacia 3 жыл бұрын
Because they only exist for an incredibly short amount of time before they decay. It is a boson so it is a force carrier that interacts with particles. It makes up the Higgs field with which all particles that have mass must interact (particles with no mass like the photon pass straight through it). The particles that make up the LHC, specifically the quarks and electrons came into existence a very long time ago so they have already interacted with the Higgs field. We know that the Higgs Boson is being created in the LHC because it is sensitive to observe masses of 125 GeV. Hope this helps.

This is discovery and knowledge, why does it matter if someone believes in a flying spaghetti monster, worships an elephant-man or likes Wiccan furniture? (rimshot!) A beautiful door has been opened and an amazing thing has been discovered. This is thought and wondering, how cool is it that we *can* think and wonder? How freaking AWESOME it is to be able to notice something is there and wonder where and how it came to be and to try to find an answer?

In my humble opinion, It is call the " God particle" because the Higgs is the fundamental particle that theoretically binds all other fundamental particles together, and also it has been like the holy grail of physics for the past 45 years.
