After being bowled out for 51 in the First Test v Australia, West Indies went to Sabina Park in 1999 with Brian Lara was on the verge of losing the captaincy. After restricting Australia to 256 in their first innings, West Indies limped to 37 for 4 by the close of the first day. What happened on day 2 will never be forgotten as the Prince of Port of Spain put Australia's all time great attack to the sword to bring up his first crentury for 27 innings and carrying on to his third double.
This is the official channel for the West Indies cricket team, providing all the latest highlights, interviews and features to keep you up to date with all things Windies.

He’s the best LH in my lifetime along with Sangakkara. However, Graeme Pollock, by all accounts, was even better. This knock saved his career though. The pressure he was under was enormous. This would have been his last game as captain if he’d lost, he’d been out of form, and was playing on an island, many of whose people hated him (🇯🇲). It’s one of the best comeback innings I’ve ever seen (along with Tubby Taylor’s 129 against us at Edgbaston in 1997)

You got to admit that Australia couldn’t work out B Charles Lara to save themselves. They used to hold their breaths and hope that he make mistakes. With all the good bowlers they had, B Charles Lara would make batting look so easy against them and he would do it with impunity. They (Australia) should build gigantic murals and statues of BCL at each of their cricket grounds and worship him before each of their cricket matches, it should be damn near ritualistic.

Tendulkar and Lara dominated Warne, Warne always felt he could get Lara because of his aggressive nature. However, I’d say Lara is the best batsman of spin bowling, Tendulkar and Lara were equal in playing leg spin but Lara was ahead of Tendulkar against Off-spin bowling. I’d give Tendulkar the nudge ahead of Lara against fast bowling due to his technique

The greatest innings in the last 35 years of test cricket. Gooch's runs came against an attack that was as good, but England weren't expected to beat the WI, who were still #1 even though showing signs of decline. Lara came into this test on the back of a 5-0 whitewash to SA and 51 all out in QPO. To come out of that and conquer Mcgrath and Gillespie at their most potent was a hell of an achievement

2 reasons for which I rate Brian Lara above Sachin Tendulkar in Tests are: he didn't give away his wicket easily. He went on to make 375, 400 not out and other big scores. Secondly, he played better in difficult situations. Besides, up to 1997, West Indies was a great side. After that, Brian Lara was usually the lone warrior for West Indies. Of course, sometimes he received support from Shivnaraine Chandrapaul, Carl Hooper, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, et al. But that was not good enough for the West Indies.

@@user-zt7vs7uc3u Except for Sachin Tendulkar and some other players from India, such as Saurav Ganguly, Navjot Singh Sidhu, etc., Brian Lara was one of the best batsmen against spin bowling. These batsmen danced down the track and were very successful against Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, et al. Of course, Lara too played very well against them. Besides, I feel that even though Lara played very well in the second half of his career, he was quite restrained when we compare with the first half of his career. This may be because West Indies didn't have the likes of Richardson, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, et al., at that stage. What do you feel?

@sw1138: Of course, Kumar Sangakkara is the best wicketkeeper batsman of all time (alongside Adam Gilchrist) and has phenomenal statistics. Besides, he alongwith Mahela Jayawardene, made Sri Lanka a great cricket team. Sri Lanka didn't have had many good players. But records are not the only criterion for measuring greatness. Sachin Tendulkar played 200 tests for 24 years at an exceptional average of 56. That's marvelous. His technique was brilliant. Brian Lara excelled in pressure conditions and was the lone warrior for West Indies, for a long time. He scored 400, 375 and several big innings of 200+ runs. To me, what set apart Tendulkar and Lara from the rest, was the quality of opposition they faced. Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mustaq, Mohammad Asif, Muttiah Muralitharan, Allan Donald, Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Shane Bond, et al., were class apart from the next generation of bowlers. Of course, Sangakkara also faced Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Zaheer Khan, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir, Johnson, James Anderson, etc. But, honesty do you think that they are in the league of Akram, Waqar, Muralitharan, Warne, Donald, Ambrose, etc.?
@AbhishekSharma-fz3fh
@AbhishekSharma-fz3fh 3 ай бұрын
@sw1138 Of course, Kumar Sangakkara has phenomenal statistics. 1. Even though after 175 tests, Tendulkar's statistics went down. Still, his last few years in cricket, were much better than many others. See, playing at 40 is very difficult. Lara scored big runs, especially on big occasions and against quality opposition. Scoring world record 375 was great. Scoring 400 not out after 10 years was awesome. He also scored the highest runs in first class, 501 not out. His attacking style of play, elegance, timing, etc., were a treat to watch. Yes, his last few years were not awesome, but still good. West Indies were amongst the weakest test teams after 1997 or 1999. Still, Lara carried on. As I already said, Sangakkara and Jayawardene were awesome. Their world record partnership in Sri Lanka was insane. I remember that in 1997, Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama also scored a partnership of something like 500 runs. Sri Lanka scored over 900 runs in that match. I think some pitches in Sri Lanka are lifeless. While Sangakkara also scored heavily against good sides, I think that Steve Smith has been brilliant in this Century. He has scored about 10,000 runs in 108 tests at an astonishing average of about 58. More importantly, he has scored big runs in pressure situations and has been crucial in Australia's wins. Of course, it's not easy to compare batsmen. Thank you.

If Chris Gayle had more discipline, he would have definitely scaled greater heights than Brian Lara, and in a shorter period of time amassed more runs...............

4:57 This is the greatest batsman you talk about? Getting hurt like this when you're already an established batsmen in the world. Well if McGrath dint pick his wicket, but he removed all his frustration on him and in my opinion its a win.

Bruh you are picking on how he played one well directed bouncer and calling it a win? There always going to be some hits and misses in an innings for a batsmen but in the end its the way they play through the whole innings that counts. Lara not only survived but dominated them in this innings.

I wonder what made those Aussie cnuts think they had the right to call our people idiots for celebrating our hero.

@drifter.............man i don't know. but that was the effect of one lara innings. In the history of cricket in the modern era(1979-present), only one batsman scared the aussies like lara did....IVA Richards. And the rattling that lara caused them always came out in personal insults

It's not the celebration but doing it in the way they did is idiotic , unruly behaviour no matter whether it's any country's fan base in the world
