@@b.g.5869 I grew up in the country and the idea of going to a concert didn't come up for me until the summer of '78 when I was 17. I know now city kids were seeing shows at like 14, about the age older kids first introduced me to hard rock. Became a Black Sabbath fan and when we went to this concert I'd never even heard VH yet. Their first album came out in Feb I think but the buzz hadn't reached me. Soon as they started playing though it was obvious even to a 17 year old this was something special. Everyone talked about how VH blew Sabbath off the stage but I loved the Sabbath set too. Ozzy was MIA or totally out of it that tour from what I heard but he was on that night. It was their last tour together (Never Say Die) in the original run.

Of course that's simply correct. The not easy part is the emotional security part of it for some. But yes, give the credit where it's truly due. In my opinion though unfortunately, the terms "Genius, Love, and Friend" because of Media's attempts to place emphasis have been WAY overused for decades to the point of whoring. Again, giving credit where it's truly due, particularly when it's not an "Art" you find appealing, &or you don't care for the individual/entity producing it, yet recognizing it for what it is despite is rarest, I think.

Brian was great back in the day but come on, Eddie Van Halen was on a whole different level, he didn't have a PHD in one of the sciences, he wasn't knighted by the Queen of England, he was 100% all about guitar, everything he had went into playing guitar which is what put him on a different level than Brian May.

@b.g.5869
@b.g.5869 Ай бұрын
People always say this but I don't think it's true. I'm not saying they weren't great players that sounded very unique when they first appeared on the scene but as far as leaving a permanent imprint on how people play guitar, I just don't see it, largely because their respective styles were associated with a type of rock music that didn't last very long. The proto metal sort of blues tinged hard rock Hendrix played was limited to a few year span in the late 60s. A lot of people say everyone copied Jimi but can't seem to name some examples when asked. Similarly, Van Halen's finger tapping and classical music influence was very influential and often copied in the 80s, but most of the bands copying him sucked and Van Halen got soft and commercial pretty early in their career so unless you went to see Van Halen live you really didn't hear any of the stuff he did that was innovative. Moreover, with the exception of a few very old legacy bands still touring guitar oriented hard rock is essentially dead as a genre, so while I would definitely agree they were both great and innovative I don't think we can say they ultimately had a lasting impact. Jimi had a few years in the late 60s and Eddie Van Halen has a few years in the late 70s and early 80s.

@b.g.5869
@b.g.5869 28 күн бұрын
@@CoreyW6292 It would be whoever can be regarded as figures of significant influence and inspiration in genres of music that didn't have such a short shelf life as classic rock and metal. Dance pop is the cockroach of popular music because it has been around for decades with very little change so whoever is considered the most influential in that genre. So probably someone like Michael Jackson, Madonna, maybe even Mariah Carey at this point. Some might say I don't like dance pop mind you; I much prefer classic rock and metal. But chart topping R&B/dance pop in 2024 could easily be slipped into the pay list of any top 40 radio station of 40 plus years ago and nobody would blink because it really hasn't changed much at all. That's a lasting impact. Classic rock and metal are still around but they exist today in the form of elderly legacy acts listened to primarily by Boomers and Gen Xers. I'm not pleased with this state of affairs but this is the case.
@CoreyW6292
@CoreyW6292 27 күн бұрын
@b.g.5869 I agree with your response. I asked the wrong question. Do you have any guitarist in mind that made a significant lasting impact? I love Jimi's and Eddie's innovations and playing styles. You are correct in that the genres are basically extinct now. It is just that with guitarists in general, those 2 seemed to have made an incredible impact on guitarists through the early 90s. I wasn't sure if you play and, honestly, am curious about which guitarist that you prefer out of all of them. Thank you for your time and response!

@b.g.5869 Basically, what I am trying to say is that guitar students flock to Jimi, Eddie, Stevie Ray, or anyone who sounds like them. Or. They learn to play Spanish and classical guitar. I play classical guitar because everyone I knew in the 80s and 90s were all trying to play like Eddie or Jimi, and most of them failed because Eddie and Jimi were truly great original guitarist that just had "it".

I've been playing guitar for 35+ years and one of my favorite things about being a musician is how humble most players are, no matter how good they are. I myself have developed a lot of skill over a lifetime, and people are very impressed by my playing, but I always feel humbled when I watch someone else play. Sometimes I feel like "there's no way I can play that", right up until the moment you try and succeed to play it and think "oh wow, I did it!". Learning an instrument is truly a deep and intense experience, and if you do it the right way, it changes your character and your life. 🙏🏼💙🤘🏼

I was fortunate enough to see Van Halen. I think it was five different times in Louisville the first time. around 1978 or nine they were opening up for journey in Montrose. I was about 15 years old and I had never seen anything like that in my life and I’ve been to several concerts before that, and I got to see him several more times in the last time was when Sammy Hagar first joined the band. But they changed music and they changed concerts and then I found that first concert ticket $5.50 is what I paid to see them open up for journey

I saw that tour. Somewhere in West Germany. Not Munich. Maybe Goppingen? Long time ago. We had not heard of Van Halen before. Had no idea what to expect. It was amazing. Never heard anyone like Eddie. Left our jaws hanging open. Dave was wild too. Band was firing on all cylinders. We thought Van Halen might have just blown Black Sabbath away. How could anything top that? We were pleasantly surprised. Tony, Ozzy, Geezer and Bill were hands down the better of the 2 bands that night. Everything we could have hoped for from a Black Sabbath concert. Top 5 show in 50 years of seeing live music. Everything about the Sabbath set was just a bit more professional, a bit more experience and musicianship showed. I imagine VH gained that experience over the next few years but I never saw them again.

A concert where Van Halen opens for Black Sabbath, that must’ve been amazing to watch live.

Eddie's work is pretty much on another level. Just looking at Beat It solo.. how does one come up with this stuff?!

I’ve personally never been a huge fan of black sabbath and knew what that pause meant. Still, praise from Brian May is praise worth listening to.

Fun Fact: The Star Fleet Project' was an EP that featured VH and May. It's not great but it's worth hearing the track 'bluesbreaker' at least once.

Unlike most musicians.... Eddie wasn't traditionally taught how to play guitar... he was classically taught piano.... an he approached the guitar with.... there's 6 strings an 12 notes.... so do what you want with them
