Leinster and Ireland legend recalls when the current Munster and Ireland back joined in a Leinster training session in 2009 while still a Blackrock College student and alongside another pupil, proceeded to stun the Leinster seniors

The new Dave Kearney? Have a bit of respect for him, he's 5 times the player Kearney is, was or ever will be. As someone's who's watched him consistently since his days as a star player at under 20 level I know how good he can be and BOD did hint at that. If he is a "Joe Schmidt winger" it's simply because he's had to morph into that to get international recognition and sure enough it's worked.

Steady on there. He's only a couple of years younger than Dave Kearney. If he is 5 times the player Kearney is then why could he not force his way into the Leinster XV? I've watched Andrew Conway since he was ripping schools to pieces in the JCT and I know how good he COULD have been. Exactly what BOD hinted to. I remember his debut against Edinburgh. He almost scored with one of his first touches, instead assisting Shane Horgan and he showed unbelievable pace to track back and make a try saving tackle. He was far lighter then. He was able to eat up ground at an alarming rate. Check it out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zs6BdMqnzNCxcps.html. But he quickly ramped on the muscle, most likely as a consequence of early injuries that he and a lighter Macken suffered and Leinster most likely fearing they needed more conditioning. And his game suffered noticeably. He lost a yard of pace and agility. He stuck with that size throughout his time at Leinster and at Munster, but in the last two seasons he's cut down marginally. The difference to his game is noticeable and he's reaping the rewards currently. He'll never be the player BOD saw in 09. He's not going to get back down to that size for fear of injury. But if he continues to improve the way he has been, he can be a viable option going forward. It's hard to see him being anything other than a bit part player (similar to Dave Kearney hence the comparison that was made), but if he places more emphasis on his speed/footwork and slims down as much as is viable for the professional game, he could take himself to another level.

inscirbe he started the pro 12 final in his last game at Leinster and scored a hat trick the game before that. Leinster didn't want him leaving, he chose to leave. Just because the likes of Dave Kearney and Fergus McFadden were picked ahead of him doesn't mean they are better, that says more about the coaches and what they prefer. He should have made his international debut sooner, it would have quickened up his development as a player. Don't get me wrong he was too inconsistent and injury prone in his first few seasons at Munster, which hindered him further. Regarding his supposed loss of pace, you may be right in saying he's lost a yard as he bulked up but he's still one of the fastest in the Munster team (just look at the try from last season where Blyendaal kicked it off an intercept and he outpaced both the cover defence and Sweetnam). I disagree on him being a bit part player, as pointed out he has changed his game to suit the Schmidt game plan, is sharp with ball in hand and one of the best in the air. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a starting winger come the World Cup particularly if he keeps getting capped and proving his worth. Before you mention Larmour, Byrne, Sweetnam or any other young winger bear in mind Schmidt isn't well known for consistently starting young wingers preferring those in the age bracket of 25-30.
