Rock This Town - Brian Setzer Orchestra in Japan
• Video
This track is from the DVD "The Brian Setzer Orchestra Live in Japan from 2001. Here's a link to Amazon in case you want the entire concert, which kicks ass. www.amazon.com/The-Brian-Setze...
The band has some of the best LA session guys, mixed with other young players....the idea of fronting a full on jazz big band is so different, but Setzer pulls it off so well.
I'd love to know what motivated Brian Setzer to go from the three piece, trimmed down Stray Cats to a 16-piece roaring big band.
The shots pre-the show on the DVD show scenes outside the concert hall in Japan with a lot of the audience dressed in 50's rock garb....very Buddy Holly and Elvis in suggested dress. The style isn't new there, in fact, there have been Japanese teens dressing up like this since the 1960's..As I remember, it's not just a dress up fad, since given the restricted nature of Japanese society around the workplace and the home, if you dress like these people you're committing yourself to a way of life, not just a costume.
Anyway, it's a great performance Setzer and the band kick ass and take names musically.
The Brian Setzer Orchestra is a swing and jump blues band formed in 1990 by Stray Cats frontman Brian Setzer. The group covered Louis Prima's "Jump, Jive an' Wail", which appeared on Prima's 1957 album The Wildest!. The BSO's follow up single was "Gettin' in the Mood." Wikipedia
Also known as: BSO
Associated acts: The Tomcats, Stray Cats, Brian Setzer and The Nashvillains

Proof you don't need 36 scantily clad dancers gyrating behind a singer to put on a great show. Just talent and good music.

It's been stated how good Brian is on guitar, but I'm super impressed how accurately and quickly he detunes his bass string and then brings it back into tune. I don't see a pedalboard or tuner, so I really think he's doing it freehand. Amazing.

Before orchestra, Brian Seltzer had another band called Stray Cats. I believe around the holidays, Brian and his orchestra usually on tours Brian did a cameo as another famous guitarist, Eddie Cochran in a biopic - La Bamba starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie Valens.

One of my fondest memories as a 6yr old child in 1981 has to do with with The Stray Cats. I will never forget riding in the backseat of my grandma's Plymouth Reliant K-Car listening to my BRAND NEW cassette tape of a band called April Wine "The Nature of the Beast" album. My 16yr old uncle was in the front passenger seat listening to this debut album of a band NO ONE heard of unless you were in the know. He turned his head around towards the backseat and simply said " I'll trade you this tape for that April Wine tape cause you gotta listen to this" I said ok .. popped it in my tape deck .. and was blown away. The rest is history.

Interesting thing about Setser, he was instrumental in bringing rockabilly back into the limelight in the 80s with his band, the stray cats, and then about 10 years later, he did exactly the same thing with swing jazz with Brian Setzer Orchestra and several other acts. He can do just as entertaining a version of this song with a stripped down three-piece rockabilly band with just a double bass, and a snare drum and you’ll have just as much fun. Check out the stray cats if you like this as well it’s not nearly as complex, but I think you’ll enjoy it.

Setzer broke out with his band The Stray Cats, doing rockabilly in the 80s, which wasn't all that popular at the time (the height of "New Wave"), and basically started a rockabilly revival. Then when the Swing revival started in the late 1990s, he put together the Big Band you see here and started doing Louis Prima-style swing, but he still kept his rockabilly roots and played some of his older hits, and it became the swing/rockabilly fusion you hear here.

Great reaction guys! Really enjoyed it. I got turned onto BSO in 1997. The rockabilly big-band energy was a huge contrast to the music I was into at the time (Industrial Metal like Rammstein, and Ministry and Thrash Metal like Sepultura and Testament), but the music clicked for me somehow and suddenly I found myself going to shows headlined by bands like "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy", "Royal Crown Revue" and "Lee Press-On and the Nails". They melded the classiness of big-band swing with the energy and attitude of punk rock, which you KNOW I loved! :) Some really great shows, man.

Setzer always said that he and his dad would listen to albums of big bands when he was a kid. They were always fronted by guys playing trumpet, trombone, or clarinet but never a guitar. The BSO album Guitarslinger which came out just before they got huge with Jump Jive and Wail is one of my all time faves.
