One of the things I love about Brian is how he doesn’t use complex terminology and how he even forgets what he’s used and certain musical definitions. He’s very laid back about it. It gives him a real innocence No showing off and no music theory. Anyone can learn and play and know music extremely well if they want to, but very rarely are people TALENTED with music and songwriting abilities.

Paul McCartney can't read notes and Brian Wilson doesn't know technical terms like 'inversion' and yet they're among the greatest songwriters of their time. I think this says something about the reductionist approach to music theory, and maybe to a lot of other things as well.
@raywalsh21902 жыл бұрын
Eddie Van Halen couldn't read music, either. Seems like the great ones just use the instruments to express what they're feeling. (And, as opposed to the chicken/egg question, we know that instruments, however simple, came before sheet music. So ...)

Learning everything there is to know about grammar and vocabulary doesn't mean you'll be able to write a great literary work. It's the same with music, it's a talent to be able to express yourself like that, which is why many studio musicians schooled in theory cannot actually write successfully

The Beach Boys, led by Brian Wilson, basically created a new version of rock'n'roll music, using repeating rhythms, and phrases ... to the point that it caught the attention of the four lads from Liverpool, whom made a very specific point of recreating it on subsequent albums. And, yet, somehow, Brian Wilson had never heard the term "ostinato" before? Ok.
