When I first listened to the album I also thought it was too monotonous, but as I listen to it more (4 or 5 times now) and after watching them play body paint live, it’s become probably the only arctic monkeys album where I feel like I have an emotional connection to each and every song in the album independently. In all the other albums there are songs that are kind of forgettable, but in this one all of them speak to me

The theme of the album is nostalgia and the way people yearn for the familiarity of the past and how he as an artist is pushing to break away from it. Mirrorball is about saying goodbye to those AM fans who ‘prefer their earlier stuff’ IAQWITIA is about Alex thinking he is one kind of artist, and splitting his audience into two islands that don’t meet, those who are on the journey with the band and those that aren’t. SOAG is about his refusal as an artist to create the same art twice and how that refusal to stay still as an artist leads to ‘anything goes’. JSOTM he is saying people like those albums because they’re fun, exciting, but they’re familiar. Like a jet ski on a moat, as a moat surrounds your home. But it also doesn’t go anywhere. Body Paint is about the personas Alex adopts for each album and how he uses them to hide his real self. The Car, as the title track, is about nostalgia. Characterised in the song as remembering going on holiday as a child. Big Ideas is about the process of creating the album and how he had so many ideas that didn’t make it to the album. Hello You is poking fun at fans who are dragging out the long goodbye of not moving on from the earlier albums. Not sure where Mr. Schartz fits in. Perfect sense is about packing away another persona at the end of the album and drawing a close to the world he’s created.

i'd say mr. schwartz probably "pulls back the curtain" a bit to take a peek behind the scenes (if we're looking at the album being sorta like a movie, then mr. schwartz is someone on the set where they're making the movie "the car"). these are my feelings because this album personally feels very much like a movie soundtrack, so i can see how that particular song would let the audience see the other side of the creation process. if tbhc was reminiscent of some ~70s sci-fi movie or book, then the car absolutely in my mind sounds like an emotional, nostalgic drama (much more grounded and down to earth but equally as vivid and gripping as tbhc)

are these all real, confirmed meanings?
@katrinaceleste1485
@katrinaceleste1485 Жыл бұрын
@@jamiestonks oh mine was just my personal interpretation haha. some of the meanings in the original comment are things alex has said about the songs in interviews but he hasn't really elaborated much and i get the feeling that he wants us all to dig deep and interpret them however each of us can. feels like he enjoys seeing our different opinions and there's not really one "true" meaning here but idk i can't poke around his brain so maybe i'm totally off the mark here
@ricwheatley
@ricwheatley Жыл бұрын
@@jamiestonks there is an interview with Steve Lamacq where Alex says that the closest thing to an inspiration for the album is a Nat King Cole song called Where Did Everyone Go, which is about an artist who is remembering being mega-popular and can’t understand where his audience went. Which if you think about the bands move from AM to TBHAC pretty much reflects that. So you can see how this album is exploring those ideas of why people are attached to the earlier stuff and haven’t moved on with the band. Plus, there’s some subtle lyrics that point to it too.

It’s called the car because of the amount of emotional attachment and importance cars have in our lives. A lot of people’s childhood memories are in cars. Cars are where you go when you’re leaving somewhere, which represents significant things in life ending. I think the theme of the album at its core is nostalgia. There’s definitely something about things ending like relationships and big chapters of your life and stuff like that.

After listening to the album as a whole for numerous times, I am still excited to see that there is so much to discover. It is definitely not an album you just listen to and consume - well, their past works aren't like that either, but still. You'd think after spending almost 15 years listening to the same band, you'd get sick of it or predict what could be coming next, but never. I am fascinated to see they are constantly evolving. Living the same time period with them gives me something to look forward to - which makes me tearbend.

@Briana Mary It's supposedly called The Car as its one designed to listened to as you're driving in the car. Most of the songs tend to chronical where they've been musically as a band, and where they aren't going again. Hello You continues on from Big Ideas where Alex seems to be telling fans that he can't just shave, catch some zzzs and go back to when they were 17 and writing songs like Dancefloor. The second verse seems to cleatly sai it: "As that meandering chapter reaches its end and leaves us in a thoughtful little daze This electric warrior's motorcade shall burn no more rubber down that boulevard. Read the message I left on the thank you card" Thanks, but ive been there and not going back there.

Despite not knowing what to say sometimes or not picking up on the lyrics (which tbf probably happens to everyone), I felt you still had so much to say about the album! fun watch, you were very attentive! Strings! Sure you've picked up on it by now, but so many of the lyrics are elaborate ways of addressing the criticism that this and the last album don't sound like AM or their earlier works, which makes it all much more interesting to me. Mirror Ball, I Ain't Quite, The Car, Sculptures, Perfect Sense, Hello You, feel like have these elements.

You have more or less the same opinion I had after 3 casual listens. I feel like some guitar players might be disappointed since it's a very piano and strings heavy album, but I like the feel of it overall. Hello You stuck out for me too. It usually takes me several listens to really get the lyrics of anything, but Alex is one of my favorite lyricists. One of my favorite lines of all time is "the nights were mainly made for saying things you can't say tomorrow day".

critically the album is already acclaimed and I'd expect it to be on quite a few lists at the end of the year besides the Grammy nom. I've seen opinions from fans getting better, and it's a pretty loved album if you look at the subreddit. However if you go on their Twitter it's a lot of hate for the album.. So really I guess I'm saying the opinions differ greatly depending on where you're looking and it may not necessarily paint the whole picture.

When I listen to an album for the first time and find it quite boring and underwhelming and then listen to it on repeat until I feel differently about it, one has to question the motivations for that. One school of thought is that I along with other people have grown very fond of the band and in particular Alex Turner. His talent as a songwriter is evident when listening to the am albums as well as the last shadow puppets music. His last album tranquility is when I realised that he was really blossoming as a songwriter. The extremely long wait of 4 years to be able to finally listen to The Car was always going to be met with high anticipation and expectation. The band really set the bar high after Tranquility and with the long wait I think it greatly contributed to the underwhelming reaction to the album on first listen. Had they released this album alot sooner after tranquility I think the initial reaction would have been more positive. If this album was a debut album by a complete unknown band ask yourself how you would feel about the album then? Would you invest as much time over it and would it have a special place in your heart? Maybe, maybe not. I wonder if like me the car has more value because I have already put Alex Turner and the band on a pedestal. Maybe I'm too psychologically and emotionally compromised to give an unbiased appraisal of the music. The bottom line is that I don't want the band to fail, hence why I gave the album multiple listens. If I didn't already have an abstract kind of an investment in the band and Alex Turner, I don't think I would have given this album multiple listens and I would have dismissed it merely as an OK album with great string arrangements and 2 or 3 tracks I might come back to from time to time. As it stands, through my sheer will to recognise it as an album to appreciate in its entirety, I have indeed grown to see it as an album, thoughfully and carefully crafted. The songs are beautifully understated and subtlety executed. The songs do indeed blur and bleed into each other and evoke an overall feeling of loss, sadness and finally acceptance. It's a piece of work that does seem in general more mature than anything we've had from them previously. If Tranquility had something to prove (and it proved it in spades) then The Car is Tranquilitie's quiet but self assured older brother. Mature enough to let Tranquility have all the limelight whilst remaining classy in it's own contemplative allure.

The album is about their new sound and how their changing, I think. Because In sculptures of anything goes, theirs a lyric that goes “with their horrible new sound” and in body paint theirs a lyric that goes “I’m keeping my costume on and callin it a writing tool” which basically is Alex saying he had a different mood while writing this album. That’s what I think is about

“Hello You” is easily my favorite song from the album. It would be “I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am”, but videos of the live version (which were posted from several shows a few weeks before the album was released) spoiled me. I know some prefer the studio version, but I find the live version to be punchier. Outside of those two tracks, I’m really struggling with this one. I truly appreciate the artistry that went into this album, and it sounds amazing, but the hooks just aren’t there for me.
