It appears a lot of people seem to think that the part in the video where i pull the car forwards is fake, which is understandable but not true. Pulling a car forwards on a flat floor really doesn’t require that much force, maybe 25-50kg max. Using a shaft with a radius of 1 cm equals to a torque of about (max) 50kg*cm required to pull the car forwards. The third test where i was able to reach a torque of about 132kg*cm was actually a lot harder but obviously seemed a lot easier because you’re “only” lifting 22kg at 6cm (132kg*cm) instead of pulling a big heavy car on wheels where you actually only require 50kg (max) at 1cm (50kg*cm).

you can easily calculate the necessary force with F = m*g and F_r=F*R with R= rolling Resistance of Tire on concrete. F_necessary needs to be higher than F_r , so that the car moves. m = 1500 kg (ford focus) , g=9,81m/s² , R = 0,01 --> F_necessary > 147,15 N . With a 6 cm radius, the necessary torque is about 9 Nm (6.64 ft-lb). and that is not that much.

While it performs a function, it still takes a lot of time to design, breaks, redesign, breaks, redesign, along with sanding, usually need to reinforce with metal axles, real bearings, and in the end, after days of work, still doesn't outperform something you could buy on Amazon very cheap and get it next day. It's still fun, and satisfying...but can be frustrating. I spent months designing and 3d printing custom oraginzers, shelving, tool holders, etc for my work van....and one day my 4 year old daughter left the side door open and only 1 afternoon of direct sunlight ruined everything. Even though it was supposed high temperature resistance filament, everything warped enough where it either didn't work right anymore, or just looked bad enough I removed it.

For anyone else confused by the 'kg/cm' torque measurements: I *think* I'm convinced I converted it correctly to both SAE and SI units I think are more familiar: That's about 13 N*m, or 17 Lbf*ft, which isn't _insane_ considering the 80+ pounds most cars' lug nuts are torqued to. Just means you need a longer lever, though. Or a bigger gear reduction, though :)

Hahaha this is actually true. Test number 3 with the 22 kg weight was actually a lot harder than the ford but it looks way cooler 😎, I did try to pull the car forward with its handbrake on, but then the bevel gears in the first stage started to slip and one of the tabs broke off, I might give this another try in the future.

This is great, we need more functional (and ideally parametric) 3D prints! Who cares about vases? Just a little critic: torque is measured in force TIMES length. e.g. 13kg at 6cm corresponds to 13kg * 9,81 N/kg * 6cm = 765 Ncm, at least here on earth.

@saleplains
@saleplains 3 жыл бұрын
i mean yes but also no lol, its the cross product of a force vector and a distance vector. kg is a unit of mass. the force in this case is the gravitational force acting on the mass. 1 newton is 1 (kg⋅m)/s^2. surface gravity here about 9.81m/s^2. the most typical torque unit being the newton⋅meter (N⋅m) so for the final 22kg test we get a peak torque of just shy of 13 N⋅m when the servo arm is parallel to the horizon. this is quite a good result. however the mistake is more understandable here because for some truly unknowable reason the actual manufacturers of hobby grade servos such as Spektrum (the maker of his remote) routinely incorrectly use kg⋅cm instead of either N⋅m or mN⋅m (milli newton meter). This likely stems from the fact that on many of these companies rate their product using the imperial system and then simply post a metric conversion and some dumb technical writer got confused. this is because while we think of pounds and kilograms as being imperial and metric counterparts they are actually entirely different properties. pounds are not a measure of mass but are treated as such in some contexts even though weight is a force and so pounds are a force unit. this is why the imperial standard torque unit is the foot⋅pound (ft⋅lb) so someone at the company with limited understanding just converted feet to meters and pounds to kilograms and called it a day. TL:DR excellent servo and excellent video and someone at spektrum needs a talking to thanks for sharing your work with us

as you can see "gear up" is 2 gears when you spin the first gear the second one goes faster "gear down" is when you spin the second gear the first gear goes slower but the torque is muliplicated by 10x so that means that the gear box is 40 times more torque as the motor placed but turns really slow the upsides of "gear up" is that goes faster. the down sides are that the more gears the more torque you need to turn the upsides of "gear down" is that the more gears the more torque will be added and you dont need more torque to turn it the downsides about it that more gears more slower the universe is like a balanced game

Great video! I see you're using PWM for the motor, maybe change the PWM frequency to something like 30-40kHz so that it's outside the audible range? It can get a bit annoying

Worth mentioning those are usually called herringbone gears in the 3d printing community. Some early extruders used that type.
