Yes please. I’m fairly new to photo editing and just can’t get on with LRc file management. I started with LR and PS mobile/desktop and it’s much easier to get into. I really hope they bring ‘open as layers in PS’ to make focus stacking easier as that’s the only reason for me to use LRc. Otherwise I have all I need from the cloud versions.

This channel is really geared towards me. I started out with photography about 6 months ago and grew really comfortable with the mobile version of Lightroom. I needed to get Classic to do some print layouts and I was totally lost in all the functions. There's like no intuitive feel to Classic compared to mobile and I'm not sure why really. Even the design of the interface feels like something from the early 2000's. I'm at a point where I'm concidering getting an iPad Pro because it just looks so smooth to edit with a pencil directly on the screen. The only thing I'm missing is the amazing AI noise reduction from the desktop version. Since I do a lot of bird photography on small format cameras it's essential to have good noise reduction. I really hope Adobe will get working on it as well as some other important functions that you mention in the video!

You've opened my eyes to a much improved workflow. I've been a purist over the years, spending considerable time to edit images in a Lightroom Classic to Photoshop workflow, even if the images end up on social media. I've got an array of hard drives on my desk that back up to each other, and it has become quite cumbersome. I need to simplify.

I totally get it, Alan. There is A LOT that can easily overwhelm many people. And that's why I gravitate towards using Lightroom (as opposed to Classic). I had spent years learning the ins and outs of Classic, but it was always too unwieldy for me. That's why I switched to Lightroom Cloud/Mobile, and its comments like yours that reinforce my decision to focus on mobile.

Great video, Brian, I always enjoy your content. I have been shooting for close to 40 years, primarily news, editorial, and dabbling in landscape/nature. I purchased my first iPad Pro in 2017 and frankly have not looked back (honesty the iPad Pro is the best thing to ever have come out of Cupertino bar none, and I have been a Mac user since 1993). I am currently using a 2022 12.9 iPad Pro (maxed out) for most of my personal work and paid assignments, frankly I sold my 15’ Macbook Pro late last year, leaving me with a Mac Mini M1. That said, as much as I love the iPad for editing ( some 90% of my workflow is done on that device), there is still room for improvement. I am sincerely hoping that Adobe develops a mobile version of ‘Classic’ or brings ‘Mobile’ up to the level of ‘Classic’. There are still a lot of features in LRc that I use (HDR/Pano, the new Denoise, the updated spot/Healing/Remove tool), so with the power that these new iPads now possess, I hope to see more 3rd party pro apps make their way onto this platform.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash 11 ай бұрын
I feel your pain, trust me. I've been hoping for Pano and HDR merge with LR Mobile for a long time, but I just don't know if we'll see it. I hope we do! Same with the new denoise AI tool that the desktop apps have. I get it to a degree. That sort of technology may require more processing power, but the iPad (M1/M2) can crush anything you throw at it. I mean, if you can run Final Cut Pro on an iPad, you should be able to do tone mapping, pano stitching, or a focus stack. With that said, Lightroom Mobile does have the new Remove brush, so that's a step in the right direction. Still... I absolutely love Lightroom's cloud-based ecosystem and would never go back to Classic. I can't stomach the thought of managing another catalog ever again.

Brian, really appreciate this video, would love to see more on the Mobile approach , as I have been equipped with hardware, and all mentioned software mentioned for eons, but held back from pursuing thinking that things were not fully developed for my purposes. Now I see that I can go much further than I thought in Mobile, will also increase my cloud plan to handle this. These PSD files can sure add up on Adobe cloud. I am lucky enough to have the funds to do this, however, many others might not be able to do so. Perhaps best approach might be to swap or replace existing cloud storage to Adobe. I am not a professional. Thank you for your presentation, I think both you and Matt are my favorites in all the space, and yes, I look forward to more of these Mobile efforts.
@brianmatiash
@brianmatiash 11 ай бұрын
You are 100% correct that these PSD and TIFF files can quickly eat into cloud storage quotas. I totally get that, and the only surefire solution that I can currently offer is diligence. What I mean by that is that you can manage which files get synced, but it isn't especially straightforward. Here's what I'd recommend (and I'll either create a video on this for YT or include it in my upcoming Lightroom Mobile Mastery Course, or both): in Lightroom Desktop, go to All Photos and search for all PSD files because they generally have the largest file sizes. Next, I'd ensure that I have local copies of each of those PSDs, which I do because I have that option enabled in settings. Then, I'd then export each of those PSDs as full resolution JPEGs. I'd then repeat the process for TIFF files. With that done, I'd delete those PSD and TIFF files to free up my cloud storage space and import the JPEGs, which would have far smaller file sizes. I totally get that this is far from an ideal solution, but that's one option. The other option is to log onto Lightroom Web (lightroom.adobe.com) and use their "Clean Up" technology preview to identify photos that you may want to delete. I haven't tried it out, but it may be worth a look.

Boy, a lot of food for thought here and an excellent and thought provoking video. Firstly I am a Lightroom CC person mainly as I only wish to pay for the minimum 20TB plan and do use features such as the NIK filters, Topaz Denoise, and the Book module (we travel somewhat frequently - COVId excepted - and I make Blurb books). However, I have been using LR Mobile while I'm away and doing a fair amount of editing. My equipment BTW is an X-Pro2, GRIII, and an iPhone 13 mini. I used to take my 11" iPad Pro but now find the iPad mini 6" does the job well. Recently I have used Photoshop for a few features such as Content Aware removal and adding text. After watching this I opened PS on my iPad and was astounded by what it does. One conclusion from your KZfaq is while I do not want to be as capable on PhotoShop as I am on LR I need to become more adept and especially as my few found IPad Phtoshop!

Photoshop on the iPad is just powerful enough to be interesting because it can do a few things that Lightroom can't. I'd love to see Adobe build it out to where you can do a multi-image select and send them to Photoshop on their own layers. That'd be amazing, especially if they added focus stacking capabilities. But, even that's a pretty niche use case. Trust me - this Lightroom cloud-based ecosystem is the future of digital photography... for Adobe at least. It's only going to get better, and if they can make their cloud storage pricing more affordable, it'd be unstoppable... although $10 for an extra TB isn't that bad.

Yup, Lightroom should work pretty much the same on either iPadOS device. The biggest bottleneck would be the port. Hi Brian, First let me say I would definitely like to see more videos on this topic. I am in the process of using Cloud Sync more then in the past. Definitely like the portability. Now if I remember correctly didn’t you a number of years ago change your mind and went back to Lightroom Classic? I assume that since Mobile has gotten better over the last coupe of years you have returned to Mobile. I know also you like Topaz Photo AI so the question is how do you use this product with Mobile? By the way I do plan on getting your upcoming new videos on Mobile and the travel video. Always enjoy your videos. In fact I have been following you since yours days when you were with ON1 many years ago. Cheers!

@brianmatiash 11 ай бұрын
Rock on, Stuart! I am so grateful that you've been with me all these years. I still chat with some of the folks at ON1, they're awesome people and I miss them a bunch. You are correct. In fact, I did two livestreams in early 2021 where I explored the reasons for going back to Classic and actually made the switch. That lasted less than a month. It became clear to me very quickly that Lightroom Classic just didn't suit my photo management and editing preferences. Fortunately, switching back to Lightroom wasn't difficult, and I've been there ever since. And I do mean what I say: I edit just about every single photo using Lightroom Mobile on my iPad Pro. However, there are exceptions where I have to use Lightroom on the desktop, including one that you brought up. That is, when an image suffers from excessive noise. In those cases, I have no choice but to use either Lightroom's new Denoise AI tool or send it to Topaz Photo AI via Photoshop (because Lightroom doesn't have any 3rd party app support beyond PS). The other scenario is when I need to use Photo Merge for HDR or Pano, but I'm seriously hoping that Adobe finally brings those features to mobile. Aside from those scenarios, I can do everything I need in Lightroom Mobile.

Holy cow, those apps have come a long way since I last had a fiddle with them! Having tried in vain to operate an iPad first workflow for several years, I finally gave up when the M1 MacBook Air came out. It allowed me to have full fat LR Classic in a package not much bigger or heavier than a 12.9 inch iPad Pro and keyboard. I think part of the problem was that I was running a 1st gen iPad Pro, which just wasn't up to the job. As I wasn't confident that the workflow would work for me, I resisted upgrading. But seeing what the recent versions can do on an M1 iPad I might have to rethink!

Great video with very useful tips. It’s rare to see videos specific to Lightroom CC for iPad. This has been my workflow for many years. I love being able to edit my images on the couch with my iPad. Unfortunately, with the latest release of v9.0, Adobe “simplified” and broke the interface. Hold Tapping the image while dragging a slider no longer shows the clipping/masking which to me was a critical feature as I typically use the Apple Pencil while editing. I can still show the clipping/sharpening mask by using two fingers while dragging the slider but this doesn’t do much good while using the Apple Pencil. Also, while in magnified view, it used to be, the adjustment panel would hide while I drag an adjustment slider while still showing me the adjustment value which was a nice feature. In the latest version, it no longer shows the adjustment value while I drag making it hard to make fine adjustments. I reported this to Adobe and they confirmed that this is a bug that was introduced in the latest v9.0 update. Fingers crossed that Adobe fixes this bug soon as these minor interface bugs took away some of the joy of editing images with my iPad. I find that for most of my images, Lightroom for iPad has all the functionality I need.

My pleasure! And you can be sure that I'll share more videos that focus on Lightroom and Photoshop mobile. In fact, I'm quite sure that I'm going to pivot entirely to mobile content going forward because that's what I'm most passionate about. I do have Affinity Photo installed on my iPad and use it for very specific purposes: to stitch panos, tone-map HDR images, and combine focus stacked images. Unfortunately, Affinity Photo doesn't support DNG as an output format, but that isn't a deal breaker. But, yup, I will create new videos using that app, as well.

What a great video. Did I see something that Adobe is no longer doing the sync anymore starting in February? Also I would like to see your import process into Lightroom Mobile eg reading from a card and how you send the shots to a specific place in the cloud.

I think you’re referring to the notice that Adobe will cease syncing Creative Cloud Files via assets.adobe.com effective 2/1/24. That’s totally different than the photos synced via LR. as for my import process, I’ll be covering that in depth in my upcoming course, Lightroom Everywhere. The link is in the description above. 👍🏼

Hi Brian, many thanks for your most interesting video about using LR on the iPad Pro. I am an old LRC and less LR user. Whereas I develop and have all my collections in LRC and make via synchronization some of them available in LR - on way road. I found all what you said very convincing, however there is one challenge using LR on the iPad when traveling: the synching with the cloud. When I come back from a wildlife shooting I have more than 300 Raw 45MB files on my express cards. Trying to sync that in an hotel or sometimes even at home can take hours. So the synchronization process for me is the weak element in the chain that makes otherwise a lot of sense. What is your take on that ?

Brian, I'm confused. You mentioned that your external hard drive serves as a backup when you connect to it. However, I was under the impression that LR (Lightroom) photo storage was solely cloud-based. Also, I am one of those not willing to add photo storage to my monthly bills, until it is less expensive than the electricity required to run my local HD.🤪 P.S. I currently have 5TB of photos, but working hard a shrinking that via good editing as I started with 11TB.

Definitely agree with you on the Cloud fee as it is very costly. I just went for the 1TB rate for $10 a month even though I do have over 6.5TB of photos with Classic. Just added current images from this year. The other issue I have is Data Cap. That can get costly also. However with that said I do like editing on the iPad M1 I have. Love the portability. Cheers!

Hey Ron. So Lightroom does currently require you to sync your files to their cloud. That is true, and I hope we see that change in the future because there are lots of photographers who'd benefit from the simplified-yet-powerful interface of Lightroom (vs Classic). With that said, there is an option in Lightroom to designate an external drive to have a local backup of all your files. Mind you, this is just a backup of the original files, not any sort of XMP sidecar because Lightroom manages all of that in the cloud. So, when I get back from a trip, as soon as I connect my laptop to my TB3 dock (which has my 24 TB drive connected), Lightroom will automatically begin downloading all of my synced files to that drive. The important distinction between this and LRC is that this is purely a local backup. Lightroom will never reference those locally backed up files. It's there for peace of mind only. It sounds like a video on this process may be worth creating. As for the cloud storage cost - I totally agree. While $10 for 1 TB (with LR only) seems fair, I understand that many photographers have already amassed way more photos than that. Adobe likely understands that, too, and will hopefully add additional plans that are reasonably priced so that more photographers feel comfortable making the switch.

The data cap is a real thing. I was fortunate when I did my first full upload to Adobe Cloud. I was living in Portland and had just gotten fiber internet with Gigabit up/down speeds and no data cap. Now that I have XFinity here in southern FL, I don't think I could get away with that.

Noise is the biggest issue because we don't yet have the newer Denoise AI feature that LR desktop has. I am not a fan of the classic noise reduction slider in LR Mobile, so if I am working on a photo with excessive noise, I wait until I can edit it using Lightroom on my laptop.

really glad I stumbled upon this video. I've been in photography all my life, but sort of took the last 25 years off, living mostly in the "snapshot" world. As I near retirement, I'm getting back into it all, and boy have things changed! I have an iPad pro and only through research realized getting a Lightroom / Photoshop monthly sub seemed to be the right way to go. For the past month I've been playing around with all the tools and I quickly came to realize the mobile app on my iPad was superior to either the apps (regular or Classic) running on my Windows box (Win 11 with a newer cpu). I've spent my entire 2nd career (30 years) sitting in front of a computer, so haven't been relishing that idea as part of my retirement. The ability to do all this work on an iPad while sitting on a beach somewhere is very attractive to me. thanks for putting together videos like this - they really peel back the curtain on this stuff and wow is it all powerful (honestly don't miss the dark room and doing all the real dodging and burning)

However, I find that I cannot use it for LR and Photoshop, due to memory restrictions and I am looking for ways of working around this, keeping my photos on either the cloud or hard drive - or both. I have not been successful in finding an easy fix - any suggestions? Do I just upgrade my Ipad to a newer version?

More on mobile would be nice. I tried using my iPad Pro on a trip to Spain and Portugal shooting wildlife. While editing photos was great, my file management work process was less than satisfactory. I don't rely on internet access at all the places I go and therefore copy my photos from my camera cards to external drives so that I have 3 sets of photos. The iPad OS system is way slower than my MacBook pro in handling the file transfers from cards (high speed/good quality) to fast external discs, so since that experience I now take my MacBook Pro instead. I shoot with a Nikon Z9 in compressed raw and some jpgs and the bigger file sizes and quantity of photo files impact what I use. I can see using the iPad and LR mobile if it fits the type of photography and location with plenty of high speed internet access.

Quick question, Ed. I assume you are using UHS-II SD cards, right? If so, what kind of card reader are you connecting to your iPad? Virtually every card reader I've seen only supports UHS-I speeds. I have both the Apple USB-C SD Card reader and another USB-C hub with a UHS-II card reader, and both transfer RAW files to my iPad Pro way faster than any other method.

This is one of the few channels that has made a recent video on the PS mobile options for sky replacement, but I think you ccould do another where you slow it down and bring some less PS-savvy users into the fold. Apart from that: wonderful 🙂

Thank you for the kind words, Kimberly! Lightroom on the iPad would be an excellent option for portrait retouching, but I will say that the desktop version has some really powerful masking tools targeted for portrait photos. For example, with Lightroom on the desktop, the app can automatically detect each person in the photo and make selections of their skin, hair, eyes, clothing, etc. It's really powerful and easy to use, but it's sadly not available on mobile devices. With that said, I do cover how to use that in my Lightroom Everywhere course. I hope that helps!

Hi Brian, I’m considering to pre order your course. But I don’t know if it is something for me. I’ve an IPad Pro since a couple of days and im starting out to explore Lightroom cloud based. I’ve so many questions and start to panic already :’) I do mostly client work (Events, Corporate, Marketing, Weddings, ..) It took my years to build my workflow that I’m currently using in LRC. Some questions: - I’ve a adobe plan which have all of the apps, is there a way to upgrade the storage from 100GB to higher amount without buying an additional plan? - My current Workflow: I transfer al of my RAW files to an SSD: 2023 -> 2023/09/13 (Client info) -> RAW From there I select the photos i want to edit with Photomechanic and import them to LRC (i have one catalog) . All of the RAW files keep stored on the SSD, is this something that’s possible as well with Lightroom? - Will the course learn how to transfer all of the existing settings, presets, etc from LRC to LR? - Will the course covers everything how to build a proper workflow?

Hi there, Dylan. Thanks so much for considering my Lightroom Everywhere course. I've been working on it nonstop, and am nearing the completion of recording all of the videos. With regard to your comment, the first disclaimer that I need to make is that it's difficult to give absolutes in terms of whether Lightroom Cloud or, by extension, Lightroom for the iPad, would be a perfect fit because I don't know the details of your workflow. However, I can say that virtually everything that I need from an editing workflow is available with Lightroom on the desktop and on my mobile devices (with a few exceptions). As for your questions: - You should be able to add storage to your Creative Cloud plan (with all the apps). Check out this Adobe support article for more info: helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/upgrade-creative-cloud-storage.html. I do recommend at least 1TB of storage for photographers interested in using Lightroom to manage their library. - I'm unsure whether you're using a desktop or an iPad for this workflow. If you're using a desktop, then you can specify an external drive for Lightroom to store all original files on. But, it only stores the actual files, not any sort of catalog or sidecar because Lightroom manages that in the cloud for you. I teach that workflow in detail in my Lightroom Everywhere course. If you're using an iPad, then you can copy original files from an SD card to an external drive using the Apple Files app, but that will not be accessible in the Lightroom iPad app because there is no external drive read/write support within the app. I hope we do see that eventually, though. - There is an in-depth module that walks you through migrating a Lightroom Classic catalog (including presets, edits, etc) to Lightroom. It is a very detailed process with a lot of moving parts, but I cover it all. - The course covers how to use Lightroom and understand the ins and outs of managing a library in the cloud. I share my personal workflow, but your needs may differ. Still, you will be equipped with everything you need to know to make Lightroom work for you (within its capabilities). I hope that helps!

Thank you for the video. But it's not photography. It's Photoshop. There is nothing wrong with that. But don't confuse the two. Some of us try to take pictures with our cameras -- and maybe we're no good at painting with Photoshop. So, our work is the work. The sky is the sky. It cannot (should not) be replaced in a photo -- as that was the moment. That said, I am not against the artistic flow. Want to paint a picture? Go for it. Rembrandt & Monet did it all the time. But they called it painting. Not photography. All told -- I did love your final image. It was great. But it was a painting. Not a photo. And that's great. It really was a good picture. I loved the contrast. Nice job.
