Thanks Brian, I just borrowed some of your settings that work for me. One added tip for those that want the benefits of smaller file sizes but still want uncompress raw: Use Adobe's DNG raw format. Its a lossless compression that is much more efficient then Sony's ARW Raw format. My uncompressed DNG images were < 50MB....

@5:15 There is a lot of confusion about Long Exposure Noise Reduction all over the internet. Even low ISO Long Exposure shots suffer from noise/grain due to the background radiation present all around us. What LE NR does is not processing for a minute but it takes a reference shot to determine the severity and pattern of the background noise which is then subtracts from the LE image it shot before. If it is wise to turn it off depends on your situation. Smaller sensors (MFT for example) suffer more from background noise and therefore really need LE NR. Full frame sensors have less of a problem but the A7R with its high resolution obviously suffers more than the regular A7. So leaving it on might be a good idea actually. But I completely agree that the wait after taking the shot feels like hours ;-)

Have an suggestions or a place to point me in the direction to for choosing color profile for shooting stills on the a7rii? I've always had the PP turned off until recently I started to truly do video with the camera. Can't seem to find many articles for stills regarding s-log2, cine1/2/3/4, and also color mode. I've currently got mine in cine4 and in ITU709 but there's so much more you can do. Thanks in advance!

Long exposure NR does not take another minute to process. It takes another picture at the exact same exposure settings and compares. This mainly removes hot pixels caused by the long exposure heating the sensor. Not regular noise caused by high iso.

In your review I noticed that your setting for Raw was uncompressed. I find that under most normal shooting scenarios that the difference between raw compressed & raw uncompressed is not that noticeable yet shooting uncompressed doubles the size of each picture you shoot from 42 meg to a whopping 84 meg.

I do have a question. In a studio setting where ample light can be added: Is 100 ISO the most desirable? I heard that 160 ISO and multiples of 160 are best for clarity.
@JakeOrvidas
@JakeOrvidas 7 жыл бұрын
That rule is for DSLR video shooting! For photography you want to keep your ISO as low as lighting allows to reduce the noise in your image.
@terrybrooks395
@terrybrooks395 7 жыл бұрын
TIP: With long exposure noise reduction the camera isn't taking "about a minute to process the image", what it's doing is taking a "dark exposure" of the same duration as the main exposure, the dark exposure is effectively letting no light onto the sensor but the exposure will generate the same noise in the same locations as the main exposure, the camera then uses the dark exposure as a mask to remove the noise in the main exposure
@noenken
@noenken 7 жыл бұрын
Was about to write about that. Let me just add this: Regardless of what software, without that darkframe you are not getting rid of false pixels in an automated way. So not using this will probably cost more time later on because you have to fix that manually. Also as far as I know this is done pre-RAW, so this automation does not just exist in JPG like the High ISO NR. (Please correct if I'm wrong on that one.)
Is the SONY A7Rii worth it in 2023? My review after 4 years.
