Yeah, I suspect this is the atypical art tutorial 'money grab' meaning they show you what they do WITHOUT showing you the critical steps to a perfect likeness. That would make you a threat to their business model. Seriously. The accomplished portrait artist uses proportional dividers, etc., not to mention color matching they don't clearly explain for obvious reasons.

I've never seen anything like this. It's so amazing and realistic! You mentioned John Singer Sargent a few times and watching this I see why I've always been so drawn to his paintings.
@BrianNeherFineArt

Thanks so much for the comment, Beth! It's greatly appreciated! Sargent is one of my favorite painters to study. His portraits are phenomenal and his full control of values, color and brushwork are amazing. Another great painter to study from that era is Anders Zorn. He was a Swedish painter who was a contemporary of Sargent. Many artists consider Zorn a better draftsman than even Sargent. Thanks so much again and have a great day!

Thank you for all the great videos. You have explained temperature and value so succinctly during a previous demo... The thermostat and light dimmer analogies are easy to understand. I just wonder what medium you use, apart from the Liquin (toward the end of painting)... ie. do you ever use Linseed oil or Gamblin's solvent free solvent when mixing oils? LOVE all your portraits!!!
@BrianNeherFineArt
@BrianNeherFineArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the question, Belinda! The only medium that I use, besides paint thinner, is Liquin. I primarily use it during the final stages of a painting when I want to introduce a subtle color or value into a specific area. Other than that, I paint with solid paint (paint that hasn't been thinned down with any mediums). This way, I'm able to more easily blend with my fingers, rather than removing paint in the process. I hope this helps. Thanks so much again and have a great day!

Hello Brian, I'm a little confused here, your approach is correct, but then why does the painting look faded? The light source and shadow is fine, but the colours aren't vibrant. It's a genuine query, nothing else. Maybe I'm trying to correlate with Bouguereau's work.Thank you.

Thanks so much for the comment! When painting outdoor light, especially in a backlit situation like this, the values tend to be keyed much higher (lighter) in the face, giving a more muted and subtle look. Although there were more dark values available to me, I chose to stay within a limited value range in order to give the illusion of outdoor light. When working this way, an emphasis on color temperature changes, rather than value changes, plays an important role in creating volume (three dimensional look). I hope this helps to answer your question. Thanks so much again and have a great day!
