The battle of the big dogs is finally here, with the face off between the Wright ZK and the Ferris Z3X Stand On lawn mowers. We put them head to head while mowing overgrown grass in the fields next to Wright HQ!
Both of these mowers have been claiming the top spot when it comes to build quality, mowing productivity, and just flat out shredding tall grass in our extreme tests. We got a chance to put them through regular mowing conditions as well as all the extreme test. Who came out on top? Watch and find out!

Why not use a brush hog and tractor to mow tall grass in open fields? When I was a kid, I use to help my grandfather with his landscaping business. We mowed and cleared fields that were going to be used for building new homes.

It really did. That Articulating front suspension did what it was designed to do. The Wright scalped. The ferris didn't. It's funny how quiet Brian and Stan got after the Wright went through that hole and how Ed changed the subject to walkers right after the ferris went through. Complete bias. What a total loss of credibility for the 3 of them. I'm a scag owner and I'll be purchasing a ferris zx3 after seeing this. I can't believe this video is still up. The bias is thicc in this one. Wow.

72" mowers always cut tall grass better than a 60" !! I've done it over and over. Simply because the blades are longer. But was amazed how the 60" Ferris Kept up. Some how seems like these videos never are quite accurate 🤔 Always something not comparable. But hey I know it's hard to get everything just right. Thanks for the show!

Ed Wright is such a knowledgeable and intellectual man. Love his input, biased or not. He sees benefits and flaws both ways. I am a Ferris owner and fan, but I see the many benefits of the Wright mowers also. So many great machines. Wish I was like Ed and owned one of each!! Lol!! I currently run 72" mowers but have considered going to 60/61" just for the deep grass factor. You guys put a pretty good beating on those mowers from 1" cut (oops!) to the tall deep stuff. People get use to the settings of the mower they are on all of the time. Jumping back and forth can confuse things. That is why I would like to get everything the same so that switching machines or operators is a smooth transition. From a single bolt holding the blades on with the Ferris to the through bolt with the Wright, deck height adjustment settings, and just the controls in general, each is their own animal. Like Ed mentioned with the way a Walker operator runs a mower, you get use to what you run. It took me a while to get use to the differences of running a Ferris with suspension (3200z), and now I struggle with a fixed frame mower because I am out of practice. Looking forward to more videos!! Great opportunity for all of you, and great that you get to share the experience.

Nicholas K I have been running the 3100 and now 3200’s since 2011 and I really like them. They have been a back saver for me. I have become accustomed to the little quirks, but I get a great cut and comfortable ride with them here in the Midwest. I am interested in trying a stand on and inquired about a Z3 last year, but the dealer wasn’t getting any in until they thinned their inventory of Z2’s. I have put 1300-1500 hours on my Ferris mowers about every 2 years.

Hey Brian love the videos but from watching the video it just seems very biased. Idk if it's because the wright sales dude is there or whatever he is...? For example in Stan's video you guys were going on about the Farris control panel and how it's a terrible design but at 21:39 in this video it seems that the wright has the same problem but you guys didn't point it out. Also when you were testing the way the deck cuts going over the hole clearly the wright scalped the ground to dirt then they drove the Farris over it and blamed it on it. All I know is Stan and the other dude where only pointing out the best about the wright and the crap on the Farris. I know you were trying to point out the good in the Farris but the other dudes were very biased. Give this comment a thumbs up if you agree or lmk what you think?

That's exactly what I thought. The Wright scalped the hell out of the grass and then they blame it on the ferris. Kind of impossible for Ed Wright to avoid bias considering he owns Wright. He usually does a good job of avoiding bias, but trashing the ferris suspension system made no sense to me.

100% agree. I was very surprised by that. Ed Wright always seems very objective and fair. I think I lost a little respect for him. The articulating front end on the ferris z3x is designed to reduce scalping. It's quite simple it you think about it. The axle pivots as the caster wheel drops in the hole and the boxed frame which the deck is attached to remains square. I watched that section several times and its very clear that the wright deck dropped and scalped, while the ferris remained extremely level. It seemed like Brian really wanted to speak up. But who knows. Definitely awkward.

Both of these mowers are Beast. I personally went with the Ferris for the articulating front suspension " Its a 61" and it scalps less than my 48" Mower" Also the ride is just more comfortable than the wright. The wright will beat you up after a long day. They are both great mowers IMO. I just chose ferris for those two reasons and we dont have a wright dealer close. My JD stander that is basically kwright both have gas tanks on the wright. The front suspension is a game changer. I dont care what Ed says its a more comfortable ride and less scalping. MY 61 doest scalp a bit. Also on my Jd the belt cover trap grass and leaves causing fires.... I take the off when its leaf season.

I had a 2005 Wright Sentar which is a stander with a fold down seat. This meant I could mow forward then turn slightly on the fold down seat and mow in reverse with out turning at all. Super fast with a beautiful straight line cut. This machine was indestructible. After rolling upside-down in a few ditches several times, I'd just pull it out with my truck and a rope and keep on mowing. The only damage was a broken gas tank strap. Incredible machine.

Wish Wright still made the wide Sentars with the saddle so you could stand or sit. Peter at Wright gave us an awesome package deal for our Stander and Sentar since we one of the first adopters in the Toronto area. Now everyone’s using them it’s nuts. Don’t think I’ll ever sell the Sentars since everything is easily replaceable, and the deck is heavy gauge steel. The standers I would sell to upgrade to newer units once they become unreliable. We have 1400 hrs on our oldest Stander and 2100 hrs on the oldest Sentar and they are still reliable, so maybe with regular maintenance they will just keep going. We’re still on original hydro pumps, engines, and have only had to replace a head gasket, spindles, and belts. Not bad for what they go through.

For the record all of the oil is not stored outside of the engine on the Oilguard system . One quart is always in the engine as the oil circulates while running. I completely agree that the decklift is on the wrong side as well as the height adjustment holes. It should be swapped w/the gas fill. Both seamed like great mowers but, this comparison seemed biased. I'm assuming a 61" Wright mower w/same engine choice would be more expensive than the Z3x. That would play a big factor in my purchasing one of the mowers.

Pretty obvious Brian that you were the only unbiased person in this video. Ed is a brilliant man but he needs to rethink his words about the articulating axle on the ferris. The Wright obviously scalped in the hole test. Also the articulating front axle is not part of the SRS. All the Z series ferris standers are SRS because of the standing platform. Honestly all these videos are not helpful to a real consumer. It's just a few guys pissing around with a bunch of new mowers with no real accurate comparisons of one unit to the next.

Brian... pretty good vid overall. However several things: Should have been two 60 inch deck comparisons. Also, using a finish mower, like these, to cut 2 foot plus grass proves very little. (They are not engineered to produce a good quality cut in one pass in those extreme conditions.) Last, one advantage of a pivoting front axle (the Ferris) that was not mentioned, is the smoother ride it provides on rough ground. Reason is, as a front caster tire goes up or down, only 50% of that motion is transferred to the mower main frame.
@BriansLawnMaintenance

When it comes to articulated front axle vs fixed there are a lot of things to take into account. With the fixed axle you should technically float over the holes and get a flat cut without scalping. With the articulated front axle you should have less problem with cross loading causing the unloaded rear tire to loose traction. I like what Kubota did on their large zero turn mower. They have a pivoting front axle that you can lock to be a fixed axle so you get the best of both. I would like to see that set-up on other mowers as an optional upgrade.

This comment applies to the first lawn mower yards talkin about when you have four tires in the back you're spreading the weight of the lawnmower out equally that's why it doesn't slide as easy then the other type with only one tire in the back cuz your weight is spread further then normal

From the video I’d have to say the Ferris did really well. The wright did good! Love the hole where the Wright was supposed to go over but the Ferris really made it look good. Lol. I have a Ferris 700z and love it and a tiger cat 2 scag! I had a stand on scag and you should put that up against these guys! I mowed a clients property at 4 foot tall and it handled it no problem. Never bogged down. Scag and Ferris to me are top! Just make sure on the scag ztr the charcoal canisters are either removed or silicone one so your mower won’t just shut down.

These are both extremely impressive machines and very well engineered. If I'm not mistaken, the Wright has a slightly higher price? Regardless of price, I would be proud to own either one, but I don't have a Wright Dealer in my region. I'm purchasing a Z3X Fleet, from the Ferris Dealer in my city and I think that is the best choice for me. I really appreciate this video Brothers, because it proves to me that they are both great!

The ferris preformed better than the Wright. In the hole test it didn’t scalp like the Wright. And the cut was way cleaner in tall grass for the ferris.

4:11 I'm sure the engineers at Ferris were paid thousands of dollars in salary, to design a mower that will "derail" the drive belt at it's lowest setting. I'm also sure they didn't bother go test the functionality of this, before producing X-thousands of units prior to production. I've seen this rep from Wright before. He's an idiot.

Great video! I currently have a Scag Cheetah 61". Tank of a mower, but seems to lack on cutting ability. It will get through a lot, but I am more concerned on quality. It leaves so many stragglers! In your opinion, which stander mower leaves the best cut quality? I don't care how fast the unit can go..who the heck is riding at 13mph?!?!? Thanks for any input!

Two very nice mowers…… Ed was stretching on his “pivoting front axle comment”. If he has ever mowed a ditch on an angle he would quick realize how wrong he is when he sees the front wheel and deck about a foot off the ground. Think about it……your car’s wheels are not on a fixed axle….they are able to hug the road independently thru the use of suspension.

Guys, there's one comparison you'll fail to check that is how much accumulation of debris is under those decks, and I bet you that 9 out of 10 the Wright mower has the most whereas the Ferris would be less even with the mulching kit. The Wright mowers with those Oreo cookie deck sucks a lot of grass but it stays underneath diminishing the lift affect living behind a lot of stragglers whereas the Ferris gives you a golf course finish in my opinion. As for the belts of the Ferris is a concern they're engineered so that it would flex when you bring it down, it has a mechanism in the front to compensate for it, besides the lawns that cut in Clearwater, Florida does not go no more than 3" low anyway. The motors on the deck the Wright mower design are too heavy on the deck thus putting a lot of stress on it especially on the rear part called the push rod that holds the deck in place. I had to replaced mines and is not an aftermarket part but homemade at the factory and is not cheap and they are metal to metal ball joint without any grease fitting. As for the Ferris, some had complained that it has too many grease fitting, but I rather have that than to deal with a machine that the majority of the parts are metal to metal, I know had three of them and I trade them in for Ferris just for that alone.

Z3 is a monster. Used one for a whole season. Amazing mower. And the wright will scalp terribly compared to the z3. The z3 was the easiest mower for someone who knows how to mow, and also the easiest mower for someone learning to mow. Barely ever scalped with mine. It held a hill better than a scag tiger 2. I’m for real. That stand on z3 might be the best mower ever

I prefer the Z3X
@jamescopeland8813
@jamescopeland8813 5 жыл бұрын
I'm with Brian. The platform on the Z3X is considerably more compliant. The machine is also lighter and noticeably more responsive at low speeds. For these two reasons, I prefer the Ferris. On the flip side, I have to give credit to the Wright. They call it "The Beast" for a reason. The sheer heft of that machine smooths out smaller bumps, and forces the tires to dampen more. On the flip side... that thing is HEEEEEAAAAVY. This introduces a whole different dynamic about when/where/how you mow. Sure, the dual wheels give more flotation... but they're almost necessary. Also, the front tires carry considerable weight as well, at virtually the same size... not exactly the machine you want on thin bladed turf grass with any chance of soggy areas. From my standpoint, the Wright has its place... and so does the Ferris. If you're mowing where footprint isn't a big deal, and you absolutely want/need the most tractable and stable 6ft stander on the market... buy the Wright. If you want the most productive machine with the highest potential return in typical mowing conditions... buy the Ferris... and here's why: #1- EFFICIENCY: lighter weight + more efficient integrated hydros + single wheels = burning less fuel to do the same work #2- PRODUCTIVITY: more comfortable platform + more responsive handling = higher productivity... forget the Oil Guard system. It works, and works well... but with all the other maintenance in that 500hr window, who cares? You're talking about a savings of maybe 20 minutes annually, because that's all the time you dedicate to changing the oil. Even without 500hr oil changes, the Ferris will reduce fatigue and increase productivity in average mowing conditions. Now... as for maintenance, there's a mixed bag here, that simply can't be compared. Independent pumps and motors TYPICALLY last longer... but also include added weight, hoses, fittings, etc., that also require maintenance. Integrated hydros have less maintenance points, but are more sensitive to heat, are more prone to overheat, and in this particular comparison are generally lighter duty components. The good news here, is that a lighter machine with less wheel/tire mass to turn, doesn't put nearly as much heat into the system... and uses less fuel in the process. In my opinion, there are only two reasons to buy the Wright, as a business owner: 1- you perform all your own maintenance impeccably, and are an "end of life cycle" buyer/user... meaning, you operate equipment until the cost to maintain exceeds the value of the mower. In such case, this thing will take a beating. The frame alone, will probably outlive the human race. 2- the specific advantages of the mower are needed so much, you can justify the cost of operation. To me, this would mean some really large steep areas... and enough of them to dedicate a crew to keeping the unit busy for AT LEAST 20hrs per week, in those properties alone. If you can't satisfy both of these, I would suggest a demo of the Z3X. Rent one for two weeks. They offer it in a 72" deck, as well.

I own mowers from both manufacturers but I'm just a homeowner with other property to take care of as well. For my city half acre house lot I have a wright stander 36, the old fixed deck ones. For the 10 acres to cut at the summer place, I have a 61" ferris. I like both machines but they are designed to do 2 different things, neither would be very good at what the other does.

Great video. I love seeing the two in action but normally we are not cutting field grass. Its not really showing me what a customers lawn will look like thank god haha. I cut field grass that tall like once every couple years so cutting this is not really proving end results on clients properties. I know this may sound harsh but in my opinion neither cut the tall stuff very well but they are wet as you mentioned. For the cost of these mowers they should cut great like commercial equipment. If I go into business cutting field grass I would buy something for that. I would not expect them to cut 16 ft tall grass the same as 2 inch grass but I feel like they should cut that height better. I am noticing that even if you slowed up it did not cut better. Currently you probably will not find anything that cuts better but I keep coming back to for the price they both should work. I do like the Wrights.

Again, a comment in the video that is common about the Ferris suspension complicating the design and being another thing to go wrong.
