Ford Hub Vs ICON Vs Snap On Snap Ring Pliers Review

Leave it to Ford to have to require a plethora of specialty tools required for a simple job like a timing seal or a hub assembly. That tool for the hub had better be a Snap-On or ICON pair of snap ring pliers or your swear jar's gonna get heavy quick! They both get in there deep and deliver ample power to get the job done. I blew out the pliers from this set (were good enough till now) → amzn.to/2qkdBJu Has anyone tried these ones with or without success? → amzn.to/2WGxaaU

Dude!!!! This is an awesome video. I have been looking at the icon snap ring pliers set for a long time for some jobs I was doing and have been sceptical. Was gifted a 5 piece snap on set but going to pick up the icon set just to have a couple more variations. Thank you for making the decision easy. Hell yeah!! Keepem comin.

My go-to snap ring pliers for professional use have been Knipex pliers. I also have the same Snap-On pliers that you have in the video, they're decent but my Knipex pliers are more comfortable, so I use them more often. Thanks for doing a review on the Icon set, I've been quite curious how these 'new' tools from Harbor Freight hold up against their competition.

I have been using a gear wrench 12 piece set for years and they have been great. I've never tried the ones you got but I've found pretty much all replaceable tip ones to be problematic.

I'm glad you said that. I LOVE GW stuff, but I bought a double set of deep access GW replacable tip snap ring pliers and was disgusted with them. I think I showed one briefly. The internal ring one was great, but the external one was pointed in with the tips. You can't do that. It wont work except for 90° tips.

Nothing more frustrating than looking all over for the snap ring that flew off to never be seen again because of crappy pliers. There is a black hole somewhere in my garage that has been eating tools, nuts and bolts, and snap rings for years.

Thanks! Your power grip comes from your 4th and fifth fingers. With Snap on, your hand is starting further away, so mechanical disadvantage, whereas Icon had a better start for the grip, allowing you better control and power from beginning. Can totally cheat, help your grip with a second hand, reposition the Snap on, and good to go!

the holes on 05+ ford super duty hub snap rings are .130 so even some of the biggest snap ring plier tips will fit into the snap rings as long as the pliers themselves will fit in the hub and have room to open/spread

Sucks being in the middle of times like those. I've had a few. They are life's forks in the road where you can't keep doing what you've been doing. You have to fight and become a better person than you were before. Or take the other fork in the road and coast into being less than you were. Kind of like the saying "When crap happens to you, you can get better or you can get bitter." Seems like so many people who are successful have stories like yours in their past that were a spark or match that made them jump up out of the discomfort and pain they were dealt that set them in motion toward greatness.

I don't really see the average blow mold case as any kind of issue at all honestly. It could be the worst case ever and I still wouldn't care. I don't think most people would either unless they were really looking for something to bitch about the Harbor Freight stuff. Those cases are primarily meant for transporting to the store and giving a nice presentation to the customer on the shelf. Most people buying those are going to organize those pliers into a drawer next to other pliers and chuck the case anyway. Good video though. I've been seeing those since the Icon line came out and have been wondering if they were worth the $70.00 for something I'm going to use occasionally. Now that I know they work well however they will be going into my mechanic & scrapping tool cart.

They are decent and that’s it. I bought and returned the icon and went to the truck. Paid an arm, leg, and my dick. Very happy. The snap on was perfect out of box but tight. After about 2 weeks of heavy use they are now perfect. Can get into right areas and finesse with one hand. Icon are fine for diy, and occasional use. If used heavy on hard to reach area, spend the extra and get the industry standard. It’s the standard for a reason.

You have not lived life till you encounter the Ford hub snap ring, been there and conquered that although the conquering took awhile. I was changing the hubs on one of our work trucks in our shop, destroyed about 7 of the cheap snap rings pliers till finally i sent one of our guys to Grainger with about 40 minutes to closing time before the weekend and they had (1) Proto number 9 or 7 cant recall and he went and got them for me, you talk about having revenge on something, once that snap ring came out i spat on it, stomped on it and threw it as far as i could, the replacement hub i got had a spare, lol , i had no idea Harbor freight had anything like this thats why we choose not to go there, didn't need anymore aggravation that day ha ha ha On a closing note, its not Ford, every car manufacturer is like that, they use a myriad of things to fasten their products so you need a myriad of tools, just the way it is
