Yes, I took about 4 months from studying spanish and found that when I got back I was breezing through the lesson. Same for Arabic, I am extremely new to the language but started with some basic vocab last year. When I got back on it tonight, I was surprised when things that took me a week to master last year only took me seconds to recall and apply! Definitely experienced that. My language personality for Spanish is more rural Mexican, lol. I haven't got one for Arabic yet. I'm interested to see how it manifests.

I totally agree in separating languages or learning languages that are distinct from one another. I reached a solid level in Spanish and wanted to learn French (which I already knew its basics from school) but as you’ve mentioned, both languages were often overlapping especially before reaching a solid/good level in French. This did not happen when I started learning Spanish after having a very strong base in German (as both languages are relatively far from each other). The second point you’ve mentioned regarding pausing for a couple of months or so and then coming back feeling better somehow is totally true and I could confirm this. However, to enjoy this status, you’ll need to already have a good base of the language paused. If you’re still an absolute beginner (around A1 and starting A2 or so), that would prove more difficult. Greetings to you Brian, great video! 😄

I remember Steve Kaufmann talking about languages "gestating" in your mind when you take a break from them and I really felt like I could relate with this sensation! It must have something to do with active recall being easier if it's drawing from long-term memory or something along those lines. I also loved your notion of language personalities. I always noticed this, living in Acadian Canada, because my teachers seemed completely different people when they spoke English vs. French. I think it's one of the only good habits I picked up from learning French in a classroom setting, and I find myself absorbing some of the traits of people who speak each language very intuitively. Because of this, I don't really have a hard time switching quickly between languages or studying two languages at the same time (except Irish and Romanian, not sure how I get them confused because they're pretty dissimilar lol). Recently I started learning Fusha and after remembering that you said MSA and Quranic Arabic were really similar I decided to try picking up some vocab with Kalaam. Well, I accidentally fell in love with The Quran and now I've shifted my focus to learning that instead of MSA! Turns out you learn a lot faster when you enjoy what you're learning lol. I get so into the "Arabic language rhythm" that I find sometimes even without the harakat, I can guess how the word will sound even if I have no idea what it means. I guess that's something similar to a language personality (or more of a mindset?). Always love watching your channel, seeing your face light up when you speak in a language you love motivates me so much! أسلام عليكم ❤️

I also have found that learning multiple languages and “taking a break” on them still kind of helps when I go back! I do have to get warmed up to them again when I start, or I have the problem of just speaking Korean when I want to speak French in my current case! I think just learning more about how one language works helps put even totally different languages a little more into focus. I'm going to try to do your language personality idea to help me separate better as well!

Very interesting video Brian! I really enjoy your content. I have also had the same exact experience with feeling that I have improved in a language after taking a short break. It happened to me with Greek. I think our brains just need a short break to essentially "digest the information" to make sense of it. The human brain is such a fascinating and amazing thing 🧠 I currently speak French 🇫🇷, Spanish 🇲🇽, and Português 🇧🇷 and am currently learning Italian 🇮🇹, Greek 🇬🇷 and Arabic 🇪🇬 🙉😅 I like the idea of improving one at a time because I'm currently doing the "try to learn them all at the same speed" method and I think your way might work better. Besides, the 3 languages that I'm studying aren't at the same levels

Interesting tips. I agree with the idea of learning different languages based on levels. I tend to use Spanish as my bridge language for Korean, Chinese and German. But not for Italian or French. However, I tend to play a game to keep my Korean and Chinese vocabulary straight. Hello is English, what is it in Spanish? Hola. What is it in Chinese? 你好. What is it in Korean? 안녕하세요. What is it in Italian? Ciao. Then I go to the next word or phrase. What's up? Que pasa? 什么事? But I never thought about creating a personality per language. This is an excellent idea. I will figure this out and apply it. This sounds like fun. 谢谢奴 Brian!!! 😊

@@tarteelhesham1404 I’m not sure what your goals are for learning Japanese so I can’t say how ‘useful’ it would be. If you plan on working in Japan or if you are planning to work for a company that does business with Japan then of course it would be. If it’s just for the sake of knowing another language then I can’t really say it would useful. The language is quite different from what you’ve already learned so it’ll take a lot more effort than you might expect. However, learning it will help give you insight into a very beautiful country and its culture.

When I español I do feel a bit different than how I carry myself using my childhood school Deutsch. I currently continue learning khmer ខ្មែរ from español not my native english, then i learn thai ไทย as a khmer speaker. And when I read aloud in français I notice I suddenly speak a bit louder. lol.

Learning languages which are closely related (French Italian Spanish Portuguese) is hard at first, but the grammatical similarities help thereafter. As for learning Arabic & Chinese together, there's no initial confusion at first, but quite a challenge thereafter. It probably depends on what level one wants to achieve: just everyday talking & understanding, or more in depth linguistic knowledge!?!

what do you think ; i learn german and english at the same time can I learn them quickly but my level in English is B1
@nawar9261
@nawar9261 26 күн бұрын
@@derkonigmohammed4276 Of course you can, especially if your level of English is better than German. In terms of grammar, there is no problem because the grammar is completely different. The pronunciation is also different and you will not face any difficulty in differentiating between the two languages. But I expect that when you start speaking German, you will replace many German words with English 😅😅 but with practice you will overcome that.. Regards

I have watched your two videos about “How to learn English/Chinese on your own for free”, I found it really helpful for my learning journey even though I have studied these two languages to upper-intermediate level. I wish i could watch those kind of videos before i start learning so i could save my time😆Could you do more videos like these for Spanish and French too? I am waiting for it to start learning both these languages, please!!!

同时学习几种语言也许是可行的,但是在和另一个多语言者交流的时候,不断转换语言,比如和一个瑞士人交流时同时说英语、法语、德语,无障碍地随时切换可不容易的事儿。

I'm native Romanian, and I speak Romanian and English fluently. At school I also learn French. I want to learn Japanese and one more language, but I just can't decide which should that be (a language spoken in Europe, so that can boost my career when I grow up - I'm 14 years old). I'll take your advice and learn a little Japanese first and then start learning another langage, then alternate them (I'm a beginner, but I know Hiragana and Katakana). It would be nice if you made a video about deciding what language to learn, for me, it will be very helpful. 😇
