James Kalm had glanced in the front window of Mathew Marks Gallery a week before visiting this show. Seeing these large monochrome paintings, he assumed this might be a retrospective. Upon returning, and reading the press release, he realized this was an exhibition of recent paintings, and that it represented a new direction in the work of this American Master. "New Paintings and Drawings" is composed of several major paintings, some single pieces others multi paneled, that employ a limited palette of deep toned hues, rectangular canvases that have been divided into an upper near square section of obsessively worked pigment and a lower rectangular margin that exposes the physical properties of paint and the process of fabrication. Accompanying the paintings are drawings depicting rhythmic fields of glyphs, and punctuation like symbols, alluding to the underlying structures of the compositions. A musical introduction is provided by Hollywood Anderson and was recorded on the Grand Central/Time Square subway shuttle. This program was recorded December 19, 2015 in Chelsea.

Thanks for this, saw this show Dec. 11 and now I can relive the experience. I did the same thing as your camera, looked from afar and then stuck my nose right up to it... wonderful. It's impossible to argue with the quiet dignity of these wonderful pieces.

These videos are amazing and very appreciated. Love those surfaces and love those line paintings with their previous incarnations like ghosts beneath the surface.

Thank you so much! Especially in these times where we are not able to visit our favourite galleries it is fantastic to be able to get a guided tour from you. Marden is one of my favourite painters and has influenced me a lot in my own work.

Superawesome video once again. I really like the last part where you added some thoughts after you have spoken to Brice Marden off camera. The explanation of the calligraphers leaving a space open at the bottom, and he using that idea in his work was also very insightful to me. The Superstroke Art Movement of which I am a member of is sometimes very inspired by the art of Brice Marden ++++

Nice way to see work on line and I enjoyed the running commentary. It seems Marden is summing up & pulling his whole life together and must be nearing the end - but with Med Tech we can all keep going... Brice do something new and unexpected break out... such is the Modern Condition to be eternally new, right ? You can't go yet even though you are old enough to do whatever you want to do without worry. Take that attitude moving forward as you still have at least 20 years of productive capacity. c

Thank you James! Beautiful paintings. The colour used in the underpainting on the largest work appears to me as being the classic caput mortum violet instead of magenta?

James, do you have any idea what Brice uses to connect the panels?
@jameskalm
@jameskalm 8 жыл бұрын
+TheTerminalExpress I don't, but a a painter who likes to pop the hood and look behind the curtain, this is an interesting question. I'll see what I can find out...
@jameskalm

+TheTerminalExpress I asked Karen Hagel, the receptionist, and she said there is a pretty sophisticated framework built onto the backs of the panels, so not just some mending plates...

James, try pausing movement with the camera occasionally. The camera will have a chance to focus and let the viewer of the video look around. Great informative videos as ways!

I like the dancing Line works - they seem more joyfull to me. The others seem solumn, silent repetitive, very often soft vibrational whispers of terre verde against darks of different kinds. I suppose its stronger to watch them in Real life to appreciate the sense of surface

Why do museum videos ruin it for viewers? The camera floating around, then constant close ups nut rare is a view of the PICTURE itself. This is the worst, makes me dizzy, nauseated, not the art....bad camera work.
