LEGO Technic RC boat explores sunken airplane and encounters sea turtle!

In the waters of the bay of Anavyssos, a few kilometers away from Athens, lies a crashed US Army aircraft. On the evening of the 24th of July 1985, the maritime patrol Beechcraft King Air A90 (RU-21A) was flying in formation with three other aircraft. The formation departed from Germany and their destination was Israel, but due to mechanical issues, the King Air crash-landed in the sea. The three-man crew was rescued and the aircraft sank and now lies on the bottom of the sea, about 180 meters from the coast.
To explore this wreck I built a powerful, single-propeller boat, to tackle the wind and currents of the area.
As a bonus, during the 21-minute mission, the boat encountered a curious sea turtle that approached it to check it out!
Research vessel V2.2 specs :
Propulsion : 2x LEGO XL motors
Steering : 1x RC servo motor
Camera mount : 1x RC servo motor
Battery : 3-cell LiPo
Remote Controller : FlySky FS-i6 with 6-channel receiver
Electronic Speed Control (ESC) : Hobbywing Quicrun 1060
Footage was shot on Google Pixel 6a (boat assembly), Apeman A77 action camera (deck), Sony HDR-AS30V action camera (underwater), DJI Mavic Mini drone (aerial), and DJI Action 2 (POV).

Man this is sooo cool! I would love to see a pointier bow, I think it would cut through the waves better, and I'm sure you would get a better underwater cam some day but hey, I'm happy to see someone actually makes something as cool as this!

Thanks! I just got a DJI Action 2, so I'll probably use that for underwater footage in the future. My Sony is very old and I think something is wrong with it's optics and it's always out of focus.

Wow, I'm shocked by the work done. It was especially surprising that the ship even at such a distance caught the signal of the control panel. How much did he swim in the end (distance in meters if possible) P.S. The result exceeded all my expectations. Keep it up !

Hello and thank you for your kind words! I hope you enjoy other similar projects I've done (the sunken city) and I'll do in the future! The plane wreck lies in a depth of 10 to 11 meters, about 190 meters from the coast (according to measurements from Google Maps). The boat traveled in a curve due to the wind so it covered about 450 to 500 meters for the whole journey. I used an airplane transmitter and receiver, so range was not an issue. It could easily go further.

It probably sounds like that because during most of the video it was operating at 60-70%. At 100% the motors sound a lot healthier but I wanted to make sure nothing went wrong. These are my first proper RC boats and I'm gathering experience. I didn't want to risk anything overheating while the boat was 200 meters from the coast.

In the island exploration video it was actually moving much faster. I rarely exceeded 50-60% power here. I wanted to reach the plane with no problems, so I played it safe... 😁

I managed to throw in some extra mechanics. 2 motors will drive belts with weights to level out the boat depending on floating conditions

I plan to build a sub and visit the plane again. I'll probably deploy it from a full sized boat though. It would be very difficult to control both the sub and parent boat at the same time.

Μοντάζ : χάος... 😐 Υπομονή : αρκετή, αλλά εξαντλήθηκε όταν έστριβε η κατασκευή από μόνη της και αναγκάστηκα να γυρίσω πάλι σε πηδάλιο! 😁 Βεβαία, κάθε εμπόδιο και μάθημα δίνει πάτημα στις επόμενες κατασκευές. Γενικά, το πιο δύσκολο κομμάτι των τελευταίων project ήταν να καταλήξω σε ένα σχέδιο σκάφους που να μπορεί να την παλέψει με αέρα και κυματισμό. You should try some silicone grease both for lubrication and to keep water away from your motors.

For my future boat designs, I'll probably 3D print sealed compartments to house the motors and sensitive electronics. A silicone-based grease would be an excellent idea to seal all the shafts!

I'm currently Creating a Bricklinks Studio file of this based off of the visuals I see in the video to try and replicate the hull except using lego motors and putting my own spin on the Style. I want to build my own Lego Technic boat one day, but I'm new to Legos and it's good to study off of what others built. If I successfully complete the file, would you like a copy of it? I'm still learning the software, but it's actually pretty straight forward. Also, if you respond to this comment, is there any way you can get me part numbers for the propeller and accessories?

Send me a picture of the completed boat on Instagram or via e-mail whenever you complete it! I always enjoy people getting inspired by my builds and building their own vehicles. Unfortunately, the propellers, servo motor, battery and electronics are not LEGO, so there are no part numbers.

I use a DJI Mavic Mini. It's old, but gets the job done. An object tracking feature would be useful though. It is very difficult to control the drone while steering the boat at the same time. 🙁 P.S. Unfortunately I do everything alone. My wife or my uncle join me only to keep me company and take selfies...

Dude so cool! Did you do lots of testing before hand? How did you know how many pieces you would need for the build? Did you use a pc program to map the build?

I used LEGO Digital Designer for the design process and tested the boat with three different transmission setups in my bathtub. I ran the final setup for 10 minutes at full power in the bathtub and then went for it. I don't have enough time for lots of testing!

Very cool, do you a plan a lego submarine or submersible to further explore the area? I guess the underwater signal would be poor but you could use this boat as relay. Sounds like a fun project.

I experimented with a submersible a few years ago (you can find the video in the channel). I really want to build a better sub but I'll need to experiment more on sealing the axles, as water gets inside easily when you dive more than two meters. Using a boat as a relay would be very fun but extremely difficult. It's quite windy in Greece, so the relay boat would need constant adjustments to stay in one place. Can you imagine me trying to tackle a boat, a sub and a drone at the same time? Pure comedy... 😁

Fun fact, the plane probably crashed further away from shore, but was accidentally carried closer to the shore by fishing trawlers. During that process, it was broken into several pieces, some of which have yet to be discovered.

There's a reading on my controller that displays the signal quality as an error percentage. If the reading is too high, I'll bring it closer to avoid loosing connection. In case of any other failure, I always carry a small inflatable boat with me for recovery.

It is controlled by a knob on the transmitter and I knew where the camera was facing for each position of the knob.
