You could also use one motor to extend/retract all three if using the correct gears

You could also use rubber wheels on smooth claws, and that would eliminate the popping apart, part.

You could do this without using motors using a "Double Action OTF" mechanism (OTF stands for "Out the front") I've seen some people make them in Lego but it would be a fantastic challenge to make a small enough version for the claws. Only springs, no motors... but it still extends and retracts automatically
