This video shows the process for taking a house from Foundations to DPM (Damp Proof Membrane). This process is crucial for making a house water tight from the ground up - stopping an potential rising damp that can occur when water is drawn up through the building materials via capillary action.
The brick-layers did a fantastic job getting the build into the next stage here - taking around 3-4 days to brick up and then we finished it all off by laying down a blinding of sand and a damp proof membrane, and then a thin layer of vegetation concrete.

I have no idea whats going on here, set the building out properly, build the corners up to FFL/DPC then run the lintols to the line no need for spirit levels, some of the mortar beds are far to big for them lintols not enough compressive strength there could have got a split brick under some of them.

You are correct,concrete is very strong in compression and rebar tensile strength and the two combined are super strong.👍👍👍

Looking good. Over the back from me they did the same extension as yours ie timber frame, the built the corners first but when they came to do the part near the boundary they were clearly offline! They had to call the Architect in, the three builders and the Architect spent a half day re-measuring and generally wandering around looking stressed! Not sure whose fault it was but a lot of time was lost. I remember getting the timber frame down that side was quite a faff, hopefully yours will be a bit smoother :).

Yeah I had a good discussion with the structural engineer about that - something which partially gets covered in the one of the future videos is the method we used for dealing with it...We put down a blinding of sand across the whole site, then a 1200 gauge plastic DPM, and then 50mm of vegetation concrete the whole way across, so that nothing can grow up/through it...Sadly I was so busy doing that whole process that I didn't overly film it, only the finished result!

Hi! Learning from your videos! Could you please explain what is happening during the last minute of the video? I understand this is the 50mm of "vegetation" concrete being poured within the inside area of the new building. Could you explain some details please? I saw the truck of Aggregate being dumped - which is dry. In order to make concrete out of it, what wasadded? Is it just water being pumped in through the hose at 21:49, or some water+cement mixture?
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 2 жыл бұрын
It's slightly different from that...the dry aggregate that was poured and left on the drive was for me to use as a hard-core base elsewhere (eg. sub-base for the path and driveway) Typically concrete is delivered in a lorry and water is added on site before it is mixed and poured (wet) into place...that's what you can see happening at 21.49 - they can vary the amount of water that's added, whilst it's being poured, to adjust the ratio of water to aggregate. Hope that helps 👍

Did you use the lintels in areas where the ground couldn’t be dug out and concreted? I understand the lintels over drainage pipe.
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
We uses Lintels in the single storey sections because it was a Beam & Pad foundation design which reduces the amount of ground to dig and concrete that needs to be poured. Everywhere else for two storey was normal trench fill.

Hi mate, been following your build. All looks amazing. My architect has suggested similar floor beam design to yours. Do you have any information on where you got your beams from? It’s a very different design to a normal trench fill foundation design so trying to gather more information before I push ahead with this design. Thanks again for your time.

I'm assuming the foundation system you are using is a pier and beam system? Can you know if it can be used on a 2 storey extension?
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly right - pier and beam, or sometimes called Beam and Pad. It doesn't work for two storey buildings, only single storey.
@hsingh3111

So your beams sit on the concrete pads to make up for the ground that wasn't dug up correct?

Yes that's exactly right. The pads of foundation support each end of the concrete lintels.

I'm doing similar project and Thames Water have told me I cant use a plastic manhole when cutting into the main clay sewer pipe, they said it has to be similar materials, so would only accept an engineer brick built manhole and rendered on the outside. Also your entry pipes into the manhole looks steep, so is this okay as looks far steeper than say 1:40 as inspectors don't like 'splashing; within the manhole?
@OfficeBoyBuilder

All good points, sadly Thames Water make decisions in isolation half the time...I had a person on the phone and recorded the call to ensure I was on the right side of what they told me to do. I then had to take pictures of everything I'd done before they would sign it off... it's always worth checking, but there's less uniformity than you'd expect. The steepness of that drain pipe is fine because it's not soil waste, it's all grey water from the kitchen and utility room. For soil pipes you're right, in that you'd need a shallow fall so that solids and liquids don't get separated and left rotting in the pipe.
@henrytoor3917

@@OfficeBoyBuilder Thanks for the quick reply and clarification. Building inspector has since offered an alternative solution to what Thames Water have told me what I have to do re laying of soil pipes, so you are right, there's less uniformity and now I have to decide whether to follow Thames Water or the Building inspectors suggestion.??
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
I would be inclined to side with the people who ultimately sign off that portion of the work, i.e. Thames water...it is essentially their pipe, so to save the hassle of being told to re-do it, I would just stick to what they say. That's why I had a Thames Water lady on the phone with me when the ground was open and the ground workers wanted to know what to use. Best of luck mate!
@henrytoor3917

@@OfficeBoyBuilder Cheers, and yes you are right, stick with how Thames Water want it. The building inspector was being helpful by offering an alternative easier way but as you say, ultimately it's Thames Water who'll sign it off so to be safe I'll stick to their direction. Thanks again for the quick reply, appreciated.

Thanks for sharing. Can I ask is there no cavity on the extension or is it all timber framed. 215 doesn't seem much
@OfficeBoyBuilder
@OfficeBoyBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! The foundation masonry of any building wouldn't have a cavity, but regardless of that, the entire structure will indeed be timber frame, so the walls will be stuffed full of insulation. The actual thickness of the finished walls will be 235mm, but 25mm of that will be air gap on the outside, and then a skin of K-Rend over the top.
@Oncewasdonka
@Oncewasdonka 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I understand the footings wouldn't have a cavity but they would have to be wide enough to take one before dpc if you understand.
