I think the bride should be paying for bridesmaid expenses - dress, hair, makeup, shoes, jewlery (that's just what I have grown up with, I don't get how a bride could ask the bridesmaid to pay for these things when they are telling them what colour and styles they need to wear) Maybe its an Australian thing...or maybe its just a cultural thing, not sure

Same in Asia brides pay. But in the US bridesmaids pay for everything. and then if it's a destination wedding you still have to pay for the flight, hotel, car rental when necessary.

I'm in the US, born and raised, and I wouldn't dream of asking my bridesmaids paying for anything. Expecting your bridesmaids to pay their own way is honestly kinda trashy in the US too

The bride should pay. The groom should pay for his best man. I only want one bridesmaid and my fiancé only wants one best man because our day will be about us and no one else. We will pay for everything because we want them to stand beside us and be our witnesses. We don’t need the glitz and glamour to prove our love for each other. Weddings are becoming ridiculous. When I’m a guest at a wedding my focus is on the bride and groom and no one else. Without photos I couldn’t even tell you what the wedding party was wearing.

Always so helpful, Cavin! I know in my experience as a bridesmaid, I was always expected to purchase my own dress, but it was not ridiculously expensive either time. I could see it making sense for the bride to purchase the dress if it was an extremely expensive dress! Or I could also see purchasing one bridesmaid dress for a specific bridesmaid who is undergoing financial hardships, etc. I’m sure if you’ve surrounded yourself with loving and supportive people, the other bridesmaids would be understanding of exceptions like that!

Definitely agree. If there was a dress that was chosen and is really expensive, I feel like it wouldn't be reasonable to make the bridesmaids pay (unless your whole party is all Beverly Hills rich lol). And here's to hoping everyone has a supportive bridal party!

Fully agree!! I did something slightly different re the dress though. I found a site and chose the colour and length. The girls chose what style they wanted but I said I'd contribute $100 to the dress and they could pay the difference depending on the cost/style they chose. The least one contributed was $13 and the most was $57 (NZD) so luckily $100 wasn't like 30% off the original price.

im a bridesmaid and she asked us to pay for our own bouquets...as well as having a specific style of dress that is she asked us to pay. Her maid of honor also bought shirts without asking the bachelorette party and then asked us for money later.. a hot mess

I’m going he maid of honor and the bridesmaid don’t want to help pay for the bridal shower. Although, I paid for majority of everything. It’s ok I’m just going to do the event nice and affordable for me

yes it was $60 for the bouquet and it ended up being only like 6 roses with some greens.. but that experience made me realize I want a micro wedding with no bridal party bc although weddings are special, I don't think it's worth the stress and money.

I was just in a wedding where the bride expected us to pay for food/drinks the morning of when getting ready. Had to get there at 8AM and cocktail hour was a 7PM. Did not notify us until 3 days before, so ended up scrambling and having to pay a lot for door dash since we didn't know the area! Is this a typical expected bridesmaid task?

I could see the MOH being tasked with ensuring there is food onsite (like picking it up the night before or arranging for delivery), but I think it should be paid for by the bride. Could be as cheap as some Costco trays or more expensive like hotel room service.

Can I ask about the overall financial commitment that is typically requested of bridesmaids? I feel like it’s become so normalized to spend $1500 or more on a (mandatory) bachelorette trip so that the overall expenses climb above $3000. I’m feeling right now like being asked to become a bridesmaid is like in Monopoly when you get served with one of crappy cards that makes you pay. I’m having such anxiety over having this huge conflict over being asked to commit tons of time as well, that the wedding will become a part time job, and that I will have to compromise on my goals because of someone’s wedding.

The bachelorette trips are definitely a large expense. I opted to not do one because of that (I didn't want to pay for one and I didn't want to put that burden on my 2 bridesmaids). When I was a bridesmaid for my cousin, I declined to go on her trip because I didn't want to pay and I only knew her and not the rest of her large group. She wasn't thrilled but I had my own boundaries and I think that's ok. Bridesmaids shouldn't be forced to go on the trips - they should be optional.
