I’d describe Simon and Daphne as having both used sexual deception at different points. Simon intentionally led her to believe that he physically could not father children while knowing how important children were to her. And him saying he was willing to die on that dueling field just felt like posturing - that whole duel was pointless because all that mattered at that point was whether Cressida talked. Truthfully, the first violation of consent was him following Daphne into the garden at Vauxhall when she told him not to and kissing her even though he knew if they were caught that would make her radioactive on the marriage market by their society’s misogynistic rules. And she did kiss him back, but Simon kissed her knowing he had no intention of marrying her even if they were seen. So from that moment she was pretty much trapped for life since divorce didn’t even exist as an option in 1813 England. Sadly, therapy didn’t exist in 1813 England either, because Simon needs loads of it to deal with his childhood trauma.

Thanks so much for the comment, that is true, Simon does need a hell of a lot of therapy and as you say it was him that instigated this whole thing when he went into the gardens to kiss her, your comment is the first to highlight this, thank you

But again i was 50/50 as her intentions were not the same as him but the actions undertaken was mutual right up to the climax therefore for me it is such a grey area which i think is great writing from the show as you can see everyone has perceived the situation differently, this is why it is fantastic writing, thanks for your comment and i hope you enjoyed the video

Divorce was a major no no back then. Both Simon and Dalphne were wrong so I understand why you are conflicted about what happened at the end. We act like we can't just say that both of them are wrong and that be the end result. 4 people are so wrong doing what they did in this episode. Lies, deceit and manipulation by them all only Colin behaved honorable.

In this time period the church largely affected the um, Society so Divorce wasn’t an option; they didn’t believe in it. If I’m correct.

It can be Annulled if it wasn’t constimated but it’s really difficult 😥 and the wife has to go through inspections and a whole bunch of things. Hence why King Henry was so found of chopping off his wife’s heads easiest way to end a marriage DEATH. And One of the only ways because once it’s done it can’t be undone

It's crazy because coptic christians still have no divorce till this day!! They just don't believe in it, once you're married, you're in it for LIFE 😅
