THIS. This is the biggest clue in the first episode telegraphing that Colin is trying really hard to not be so “extra” anymore, but it’s still who he is innately. Then in the second episode, it’s his journal talking about feeling such intimacy but such great distance. In season 2, he was still stuck in a rut and heartbroken, being a little hopeless romantic baby child ruminating over how his first attempt at love failed. Between the seasons, he basically was like a girl trying to get over a breakup by getting a drastic haircut and making some strange impulsive decisions trying to be a new person. When he comes back, he isn’t actually *feeling* that differently inside, but he’s still trying to fake it till he makes it. He COUNTED the cities he went to, and he recalled the number off the top of his head, because it was important to him. He is still so ready to be sensitive and open and love love and romance under the thinnest protective mask. And you see him gradually forgetting to even leave the mask on as the episodes progress. He doesn’t even really battle with the pretending that much, especially when it comes to physically being around her. His horrible voice keeps dialing back as soon as he’s talking to her again until he’s also dropping it with everyone else and is too preoccupied to be self-conscious in that way. When he’s in that carriage with her, the phony voice is gone, and his voice is somehow the perfect blend of the pure, young innocent boy Colin and this new authentic man we haven’t seen until now.

Maybe because he knew her in her early teens and always thinks of her as his sister's best friend. He used to see her as little girl. In the books pen showed her real self, confident and quick witted. He was smitten my her real matured self. I'm glad he didn't had any romantic feelings for her when she was young lol 😂.

Yes. They are also 28 and 33 in the book, and she’s been Whistledown for 12 years. While most of the plot is different, the romantic moments retain a lot of accuracy and precision. Like, they clearly strategized to achieve exact facial expressions described in the book and stuff like that and really get the spirit of those moments or improve them. The first kiss scene is very similar but takes place in a different setting for a different reason. And the same with the carriage scene. And at the end, he asks the same thing about the carriage driver not stopping, fixes her hair, and says the same final lines. But they are walking into Penelope’s house and it’s daytime, and there’s more of the same doubt they used in seasons one and two of “What if we were seen, and what if that is the only reason they want to marry me” in the book. He doesn’t actually confess feelings in the book until after they are engaged. They just get angry and hot and bothered in the carriage after he caught her being Whistledown and start making out. There is also the scene of him cutting his hand, and he gets angry at her for reading his journal, but that’s a bigger moment in the book. He’s angry longer about that, but I think they are saving going back to that in the last four episodes, because in the book his insecurity about being a writer gets tangled up with the idea that his fiancée is the most successful writer he knows. He isn’t really angry with her specifically for being Whistledown in the book. He gets past that in two seconds and instead is angry about the risky choices she makes to keep it going and what it will mean for her socially if she is exposed. And you’re right, she’s not interested in pursuing marriage at this point in the books. She’s actually more coming into her own in embracing her spinsterhood, and THAT is what puts her in more casual and intimate situations with him than before. If anything, Colin is the one getting closer to considering settling down, and he’s at least sticking around town while everyone mocks him for always running away on travels every year to avoid getting married. Lady Danbury also plays a huge role in the book basically telling her she’s a badass chick and should embrace it, and she starts being her hype man, honestly, throughout the book, just being like, “HEY EVERYONE, ISN’T PENELOPE AWESOME AND HILARIOUS? DON’T YOU THINK SO, COLIN?!?” Eloise also still doesn’t know by this point. Colin is the first person who knows and the only one who knows for a while. And Daphne and the Duke each play roles in the last half, but they obviously won’t in the show’s version. 😂 There are other major things that I know are already different or strongly suspect will be different, but I don’t want to spoil them before the second half comes out.
