Crypto is a relatively new asset, and governments around the world classify crypto differently when it comes to taxes, and crypto taxes in Canada are different from other countries like the US.
In this video I'm explaining how crypto taxes in Canada work, when your crypto is taxed, when your crypto is NOT taxed, and how to keep track of your crypto transactions for taxes without the stress, so you can be prepared when tax season comes along -- and AVOID getting hit by an unexpected tax bill.

If I am not mistaken, this falls under the business tax. I think you might be able to put it under capital loss.

For a few months now I have been searching tirelessly for information on how to start investing. I even payed $1000 for a course that I now regret. Keep it simple in the beginning. Buy something, like an index fund, and hold. Educate yourself in the meantime and elevate your risk tolerance over time.

@@minnyf701 In order to make profits from trading you need loads of experience and a well defined strategy, which most traders don't have. If you trade without the proper preparation, you're most likely to lose your money. Identify the buy/sell ratios and identify the market leaders and most importantly.

Inflation is gradually going to become part of us and due to that fact any money you keep in cash or in a low-interest account declines in value each year. Investing is the only way to make your money grow and unless you have an exceptionally high income, investing is the only way most people will ever have enough money to retire.

Set up an offshore trust, then create a holding company under the trust. That company runs your crypto business. Unless you receive income from that holding company, you pay 0 tax.

It’s probably because before people would trade it for a stable coin and avoid the tax. I agree, it’s bs. It’s like trading an apple for an orange.. “oh well then, I’m going to tax you for that swap…”. Like dude, I already paid gas fees and exchange fees.. but oh no.. you dinks want ur pound as well. Hey Brie, thanks for making this video. You mentioned that crypto gains/losses can either fall under business income/loss, or capital gain/loss, and that Koinly will generate a Schedule 3 for capital gains. Is this Schedule 3 the same form that we would we use for TurboTax if someone has been day trading (and therefore considered "business income" instead of "capital gains")? If you've covered this in another video then please let me know. Otherwise... this looks like the prelude to a sequel for this video! lol thanks again

With that conversion fees and ''taxable event'' thingy, it seems pretty annoying to use USDC/USDT to trade then... Now... Is there a disadvantage to trade crypto for (fiat)CAD on Newton? Koinly isn't great. It is counting the bitcoin I bought as a profit, even though I have not sold it. I lost a lot of money on other cryptos though so it is odd it is doing this.

Is it calculated using 1ts in and 1st out sort of way? Meaning, how does it know which portion of your wallet you're selling. A coin purchased 3 years ago would likely be cheaper than a coin purchased today, and if I sell tomorrow the gains are larger on the older coins. How does it keep track at that micro level?

What would you do if you wanted to let's say buy land with cryptos You would send to binance and exchange it for tether and then to bank account . And declare it on taxes return ? OR from a.BTC ATM at 5 percent or more. (I guess i have to declare it on my taxes return ,?) And then send it to you bank account and pay the land with that ?

Hi beauty!! Why gifting should be taxed? Do you know something about crypto derivatives? Futures are financial contracts and should not be taxed the same as spot markets, I think. What if you just want to buy a stake in stablecoin (not as an investment) and use it to help and send it to family and friends overseas instead?! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Peace!!

Something I'm not clear on after watching this video is what a "gain" is. I'll explain what I mean with an example. If I buy 10,000 worth of BTC and then sell it for the exact amount I bought it at, did I realize a gain? Or would I not be taxed because I technically did not make anything? I essentially just held BTC and took back out what I put in. With the limited knowledge I have it sounds like if you "cash Out" you owe capital gains tax... If that is hypothetically the correct answer then it would be literally impossible to realize a profit day trading within only several percentage points. Since buying and selling with the ebb and flow of BTC would each time be taxed at the 40% (I'm rounding for sake of my example). It seems then with this hypothetical that you would have to realize a 41% increase to ever make a profit... and that is hard to come by from what I've seen so far. ... I hope I'm misunderstanding this immensely....

I am confused about coin swaps being a taxable event. If I swap $10000 of BTC to ETh, it's taxable say at 20 percent. So $2000 in tax. Say I saw back to ETH again, another $2000 owing. Now continue that pattern 3 more times for a total of a $10000 total tax bill. I cash out my BTC to CAD and pay 12000 in taxes!!!!! WTF

I thought about trying Bitcoin loophole it says you can put down a minimum payment off 250& when you sign up Then it automatically generates everything for you so say if I sign up invest money and the program starts doing its thing a week later i check my account I made 1000$ I decide I want to put that money into my bank account do I have to pay taxes on that or claim it? So even if you haven't withdrawn anything from your binance account and converted it to fiat you still need to pay taxes on that? Isn't that Unrealized profits? What happens if the whole market is down and your investments are down but you haven't sold? It doesn't seem logical to pay taxes on something you haven't realized yet

Not if you're only buying and holding. But if say you traded some BTC for ETH, they consider that as if you had sold BTC and then bought ETH. So you'd pay taxes on the BTC you "sold" if it had gone up in price from when you bought it.

@@BrieKirbyson I was talking to someone else. I feel like a lot of crypto holders think as long as they don’t remove their crypto and convert it into cash it hasn’t triggered a taxable event. I have no idea why they think this.

make sure you check out what chains they are compatible with, these software is not a one stop shop. For example they are not compatible with KCC so it will not display any transactions from KCC

I've heard and read good reviews on both, but I chose Koinly. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. Koinly offers a free plan with essential features, while a paid plan is only 49$ per tax year. If i have some crypto like SAITAMA in a small exchange like GATE iO and I convert it to a USDT TETHER and transfer that to another exchange and buy Saitama again. Would I get taxed heavily in the end? I was thinking to do it that way because if i transfer to Saitama coin from gate io directly to another exchange they cut Billions of coins as fees which is a lot of money. But If i convert it to usdt tether and rebuy on another exchange its only a $1 fee. My main thing is if i do that will i get taxed heavily?

You'd be triggering a taxable event, but how much you get taxed depends on the gains, i.e. how much has the price of Saitama changed between when you bought it and when you converted it. If the price has gone up a lot, then you'd be paying more in tax
