Brielle, also known as Den Briel, is an old fortified town on the island of Voorne-Putten. The saying "On April 1, Alva lost his glasses (glasses = bril in Dutch)" refers to an exploit in the Eighty Years' War when the Water Beggars defeated Alva and he lost control of Den Briel (and not his glasses).
